Showcasing the wares of over 170 local artisans as well as Chicago-based fair-trade companies, Wolfbait highlights our city’s local talent. Wolfbait & B-girls is a female-owned and operated independent business, fashioned by two native designers, Shirley Kienitz and Jenny Stadler. Think B-movie, B-side, bad girl, Bruiser and Brazen judy. Wolfbait is not only for the shopper, but also for the artisan.

Diego Rocha

Diego Rocha is a Brazilian born handbag designer. He began his career in the finance field in Sao Paulo before making the transition to designer. Fortunately for Diego, fashion is in his genes. His mother was a pattern-maker so he grew up surounded by colorful clothes, needles and scissors. Watching his mother work not only inspired him but also gave him the necessary background to pursue his dream. He uses many textures and prints which are influenced by his native Brazil, a country known for its extensive wildlife. Before settling in Chicago in 2005, Diego lived in New York City where he was able to perfect his skills. Although his equipment was unsuitable, he locked himself in his apartment for six months, experimenting with materials and teaching himself the techniques necessary to crystallize his vision. It is this devotion to his craft that shines through in every Diego Rocha design. Each Diego Rocha design is carefully hand constructed to deliver sophistication and style to any occasion. Diego personally handpicks the raw materials, exclusive patterns and exquisite colors while handcrafting each detail every step of the way. This personal attention to detail and craftsmanship is what makes each handbag unique and a one of a kind piece of art.

Carhartt moves into Wicker Park

Carhartt opened in mid-April 2011 at 1518 N. Milwaukee Avenue, launching only its third American storefront. Like the Salt Lake City and Portland locations, the iconic store features classic work wear gear popular with everyone from construction workers to BMX bikers. By offering bib overalls as well as rough-and-ready clothing designs for both men and women, Carhartt seamlessly bridges the gap between fashion and utilitarian consumers. The company’s style fills every inch of this Wicker Park store, from the tinted concrete floor to the re-purposed local antiques. Carhartt may have a rugged sensibility, but that doesn’t mean it’s not becoming a trend.

Una Mae’s Freak Boutique: More than just vintage

Una Mae’s Freak Boutique isn’t just about the vintage in great condition, although that’s how the store got it’s start. It also has a contemporary vibe to everything it sells, from men and women’s branded clothing, to books about pictures, to jewelery and accessories, to home decorations like a bike parking metal sign. Una Mae’s fits right into the Wicker Park neighborhood, yet still manages to stand out with it’s eclectic and unique combination of gently used to brand-spanking new items. Can’t make it to the store and share in the ambiance? Everything they sell can now be bought online, too.

Every Akira boutique different, depending on the neighborhood

After Akira opened in 2002, the trendy clothing/shoe/accessories store exploded across Chicagoland, now boasting 14 stores with plans for more. While some Akira stores focus only on clothing, others focus only on shoes. Even then, shoppers will encounter different styles depending on the store; for one, the downtown location is more urban and offers sneakers, while the North Avenue shop doesn’t. Akira knows its market, no matter where it sets up shop. It also knows trendy and mostly affordable fashion, which isn’t any more obvious than at the fashion shows Akira sponsors and organizes to showcase its more than 200 designer brands. Find out when these shows are happening on Akira’s Facebook page. Sara Jane’s No Plain Jane

Goodbye to Plain Jane. Sayonara, Farewell, Au revoir! Now say hello to Sara Jane. It was the fall of 2002 when Sara Jane opened a store bearing her own name in hopes of providing a true boutique experience amongst the slew of chains just blocks nearby on the Magnificent Mile. Nestled in perhaps Chicago's most charming neighborhood, Old Town, Sara Jane has made her humble splash on the scene. Although a regular in Lucky Magazine and Chicago Magazine, ask your average Chicagoan and they probably have never heard of the place. But local fashionistas and Old Towners know to turn to Sara Jane for unique finds on adorable dresses, cocktail wear, jeans and accessories. The quick turnover allows for more variety and the small space often times conjures up new friendships and gab sessions (lucky thing there are plenty of pubs and bistros nearby!) A visit when "Sara Jane" herself (a.k.a. Sara Plocker) is there will only prove this neighborhood-gal-pal feel all the more.
