Blake Scotland

We're obsessed with the Lower East Side and for the last year have taken pleasure in dressing her friends, neighbors, and strangers from New York and cities and countries abroad. Every line carried in the boutique is hand chosen for its high quality, unique design, and perfect attention to detail. If we wouldn’t wear it we are not going to sell it. Consistently influenced by this neighborhood, each piece reflects its cutting edge sensibility – comfort clothing for the wild child who’s just a little rough around the edges. The boutique itself maintains an emphasis on making passionate hard work fun. This ethos is reflected through every facet of Blake Scotland: The hot, clever staff, boyfriends smoking on the bench out front, creative excuses to host events – albeit increasingly fashion focused. There’s no I in team. We aren’t shy about pooling our resources. We boast a family of friends who turn ideas and dreams into reality.

Bond No. 9

Perfumery has always been about head-turning. Now, perfumes have been turned on their head. For the first time in fragrance history, a major, full-blown fragrance collection was launched as an homage to a great city. The name of this fragrance collection is Bond No. 9 (which is also the address of its headquarters boutique at 9 Bond Street, in NoHo). The city it celebrates is none other than — could be no other than — New York. The Bond No. 9 collection of women's, men's, and unisex eaux de parfum — has a dual mission: To restore artistry to perfumery, and to mark every New York neighborhood with a scent of its own. Each fragrance represents a specific downtown, midtown, or uptown locale or a city-wide sensibility. With new introductions in the coming seasons, Bond No. 9 infuses the island of Manhattan with scents.

The MoMA Store

The MoMa store in Soho is one of my favorite places to shop for creative items. They offer a large variety of cool, quirky objects, from toys, books, prints, to jewelry, accessories, and home deco products. It is certainly one of the best stores to shop during the gift season, as there is something for everybody. However, I highly recommend it to those who simply want to spoiled themselves and buy something ‘cool’ at an affordable price. As you can probably guess, every object is very modern, and unique, being that an electronic watch, a plastic chair, or a croc woven rug. If you are only visiting New York, I recommend the MoMA store, as highly as I recommend the Museum with the same name. 81 Spring St New York, NY 10012 (646) 613-1367

All Saints SoHo

When this British store finally opened its doors in SoHo New York, it was love at first sight. I would describe their style, as modern, urban, aggressive, but comfortable in the same time. Their cuts are asymmetric, sometime random, with the use of a lot of leather. The predominant colors are white, black and gray. But even is All Saints is not your fashion style, I would still recommend you to pay a visit. The store is very large, and it is decorated with metal, wood, and dimmed lights, creating a very interesting atmosphere. Expect it to be pricey; however, All Saints will guarantee you to look unique, and fashion-forward. 512 Broadway Manhattan, NY 10012 (646) 862-1832

Isabel Marant – comfort and style meet on Green Street

The French born designer Isabel Marant brings to the US the quintessential Parisian style. At a first look, her designs seem effortless, comfortable, but with details which give them a bohemian, modern twist. The muted colors, and the high-end textiles, make her clothing easy to wear, but visually beautiful. Even though, she is a well established designer in France, Isabel Marant opened her first boutique in New York in 2009 on Green Street (corner of Broom). Her store sells her main collection and a more affordable line – Etoile. She also designs and sels beautiful pieces of jewelry. With the opening of this store, Marant became increasingly more popular among NY’s fashion people, so her loose-fitted dresses and masculine jackets can be seen on Thursday nights at galley opening in Chelsea, or on a Saturday night in Meat Packing. Therefore, Isabel Marant creates for the stylish woman, who wants to be fashionable, but feel comfortable at the same time, and look as if she didn’t put much effort in dressing up, even though she looks absolutely fabulous. 469 Broome Street New York, NY 10013 (212) 219-2284

Calypso – Cruise in Style

The glamour of St. Barts translated into fashion – that’s how I would describe Calypso’s designs. Founded by the French fashion guru Christiane Celle, Calypso is the intersection between chic and glamorous with comfortable and summery. The silk-beaded dresses, pants, tops, and skirts are perfect for an upscale island vacation, but great for a summer promenade in NYC, or an evening in the Hamptons as well. Calypso has a couple of Zen, beautifully decorated stores in NYC: 426 Broom St, 935 Madison Av, 191 Lafayette, 815 Madison etc. They also have leather accessories, shoes, bikinis and a gorgeous house line. My favorites are the candles and the house fragrances which can bring the scent of St. Barts into your own living room.

Christian Louboutin – because your feet are worth it!

It is said that every woman needs a little black dress. True! However, I would like to add: every woman needs a pair of Louboutin...or more. Christian Loubutin – the God of all shoes and spoiled legs, no longer needs my modest introduction. This is simply an anthem for the high-heels which can make even my legs look fabulous. Being recognized as the high-end shoe designer who brought stilettos back into fashion, Christian Loubutin is probably one of those brands which will never die. UNIQLO – a store for all of us!

Uniqlo is one of the main brands who introduced Japanese apparel to the USA. How? Simple style, great fabrics, colorful prints, affordable prices, mass production. I first discovered Uniqlo in Tokyo - their T-shirts with Manga prints were must-buy presets for my friends back in New York. So, I was thrilled when i found out they opened a location in Soho, and I have been a loyal customer ever since. Similar to the one in Japan, the New York store is huge, airy, and full of light. The service is great, and their merchandise is always neatly organized. Uniqlo sells hundreds of styles of T-shirts, tights, sweaters, jackets, blazers - they certainly have something for everyone. T-Shirts start at $12.90 and the prints are fashionable, colorful, and catchy. Tip: during fall and winter you can find cashmere sweaters for less than $100 - and that's what I call a great deal!

Kiki de Montparnasse – Luxurious Eroticism

From the controversial name to the boudoir-like interior of the store, from the high-end lingerie, and the pleasure objects they sell, this might be world's sexiest boutique. Kiki de Montparnasse is the nickname of Alice Prin, a French model and artist who contributed to the liberation of Paris' cultural life in the 1920s. Same as the muse who inspired the name of this store, Kiki de Montparnasse is for clients with no inhibitions, with confidence, and an exquisite taste for luxury. This place is unique in many ways - where else could you buy handcuffs and dildos polished with gold? The interior of the boutique reminds me of a luxurious French cabaret - one might expect courtesans to appear through the heavy red and black curtains of the changing rooms. Even if you can't afford any of their pricey pieces of lingerie or fine erotic toys, just walking through the store is a great, sexy experience in itself.

I also love the fact that they change their merchandise frequently. So, if you really like something decide quickly, it might not be on their shelves for too long

Scandalous to Fabulous at New Limelight Marketplace

It's hard to believe the once infamous nightclub Limelight-that was once an Episcopal church turned into a scandalous late night party house- is now a chichi mall. There's a doorman in a marble lobby of the new Limelight Marketplace, a chandelier on every ceiling, and exquisite – read, expensive – designer pajamas available from Olatz that you can wear in bed, while you eat artisan chocolate from Mariebelle Cacao Bar & Cafe.

On the first floor, formerly the main dance floor, there are Havianas and Hunter boots in every color imaginable, on the balconies there are flower arrangements from Barbara Scott (that might break the bank if you're not careful), and rows of dainty handmade jewels from Tina Tang. And in the once co-ed bathroom that posted naked pictures of porn stars, you will find classy Brocade home furnishings fit for a modern princess.

In short, the Limelight Marketplace has it all for the ultimate upscale New York, however ironic, shopping experience. But lost on this irony the Limelight Marketplace is not. Many of the boutique stalls are set up around little bars that serve wares instead of alcohol: at Alexander West you can order a custom (bespoke!) men's dress shirt and at Petrossian you can order ten different types off caviar – if that's what you're into. There are mannequins dressed as club kids on the main floor and there are antique bobbles from Old Hollywood on display in front of an enormous stained glass tryptic on the balcony. Shopping at the Limelight Marketplace is truly a unique experience – especially if you have experienced it in its former gritty glory.

Two Spots for One Stop Shopping At Bloomingdale’s

For the stylish New York shopper only one stop is necessary: Bloomingdale’s. They are on top of every trend and have more brands than you're even aware exist. In the denim department you'll find J Brand, Joe's Jeans, and 7 For All Mankind for miles; Rebecca Minkoff totes, and COMME des GARCONS wallets in the handbag department; Marc by Marc Jacobs ballet flats, Diane von Furstenberg clogs, and Stuart Weitzman heels of all types in shoes, and then there's still more. For men, Bloomingdale's has Theory, Converse, Paul Smith, and John Varvatos shoes, clothes and outerwear. They have funky home goods, they have luxury jewelry finds, they even have celeb skin secret La Mer. This is, after all, a department store- New York style.

Either way, floors upon floors of designer and hard-to-find boutique brands await. And when you are done shopping for yourself, you can repent for your shopping sins by buying something for mom in the Home department - Le Creuset is available in ten colors - or for your niece in the Kid's department - Ralph Lauren Polos for little ones come in all sorts of colors.

The Scoop On The Latest Fashion

Scoop's byline is "the ultimate closet." And how else could this - Alice & Olivia tunics, Zac Posen gowns, Tom Binns jewelry, Theory blazers, Helmut Lang tees, Marc Jacobs clutches, Vince camis, exclusive Stewart Weitzman heels and flats, Ya-Ya skirts, and Acne jeans - be described? Ultimate, for starters, because that's just the women's section. The men's, kid's, and home sections meaPicture 49sure up accordingly with brands like DSquared and Chip & Pepper. For one-stop fashion shopping there are three Scoop locations in New York City to chose from. The SoHo Scoop, which is aptly referred to as the Mega-Scoop, is where you will find current runway trends and staples alike from every hip designer you've ever lusted over. Translation: this store is huge and has it all. The West Village Scoop houses a concept store that is referred to as "the ultimate attic" and tends more towards Ileana Makri jewelry, Havaiana flip-flops, and Freecity hoodies. And for uptowners, well, there's the uptown Scoop. But regardless of location, the Scoop philosophy of shopping remains the same: all the clothes and accessories are organized by trend, color, and type so that the ever time-strapped New York shopper can find exactly what they want, right along side the right pieces to compliment what they came shopping for.

John Varvatos: Rock ‘n Roll Never Looked Finer

One of the most popular and innovative male fashion designers of our time, John Varvatos, is rock 'n roll meets high fashion. Taking over the infamous CBGB's music club- that launched the careers of Blondie and The Ramones- John Varvatos is one of very few that could do the legendary music venue justice.

Most may know John Varvatos for his killer take on Converses, with the madly popular Jack Purcell and One Star styles, but his clothing makes men look effortlessly stylish. Every man can't help but look two notches cooler in one of the distressed blazers, edgy leather jackets or skull cufflinks. All these cool clothes are hanging next to vintage album covers in a store where punk-rock music is always playing.

Known to throw concerts there from time to time- with free admission and free drinks- it's no wonder John Varvatos is known as the rock star of fashion.

Stella McCartney’s Rock ‘n Roll Meatpacking Store

Picture 26Stella McCartney was born rock royalty, but in the design world she has become a fashion force to be reckoned with: Madonna, Gwyneth and Cameron are a few of her famous fans. Her fiercely feminine clothes (think sexy with a draping of romance) were the first to invade the now uber chic meatpacking district that is now host to DVF, Carlos Miele and the late Alexander McQueen, among many other design houses. Besides being the offspring of an ex-Beatle, Stella is most widely known for her staunch PETA stance. So near to her heart is the cause, that before she even started her line in 2001, she told Gucci Group her line would stay true to its "no fur and no leather" stance. Such conscious free clothing includes vegetarian shoe collection, faux fur and faux leather, but the luxury is most definitely always there with the incredible tailoring, craftmanship and unique designs. Stella's line is huge with everything from fragrances, shoes, bags, and organic skin care to cashmere coats and red carpet dresses. An added bonus? Her father's Beatles music is always playing whenever you walk into the meatpacking store.

Clearly,  Pearl River isn't your average department store- or even store for that matter. As an intriguing blend between two very different cultures, Pearl River is the first Chinese American department store. Stepping into the SoHo store, one is immediately overcome with unique colors and never-before-seen (in the West, at least) toys and trinkets. The three-story store in the middle of SoHo is constantly expanding, like the new 10,000 foot home department.  Needless to say, it's a one-stop shop for everything you may need, Chinese or American.

The collection of the aptly named "The Incredibles" features large and exquisitely cut sapphires, rubies, tourmalines, and emeralds in custom designs surrounded by none other than beautiful diamonds. Get the True London Look at Topshop

"Get the London Look" may be Kate Moss' Rimmel tagline, but it doesn't apply more aptly than for the much buzzed about Topshop. As the face/designer of Kate Moss for Topshop and its highly anticipated U.S. debut in SoHo, Topshop puts the likes of other trendy, discount stores like H&M and Zara to shame. It's colorful, crazy celebrified, and seriously stylish; there's a massive shoe boutique, accessories section, vintage galore, and a floor dedicated to men. Other stores may have guest designers, but Topshop has a resident Supermodel, Kate Moss, and an entire Picture 7floor designated to high-end designers giving fierce fashions specifically for the fashionista Topshop crowd. And the shoe selection! Ahhh! If this was around during the SATC era you know SJP would be digging through discount heaven at the Christian Louboutin inspired sky-high stilettos and ultra designed Prada inspired heels. You can find more unique, colorful, and designed shoes at Topshop's shoe boutique than at Saks Fifth Avenue- and that's a guarantee. Let's not forget about the boys. Topman is dedicated to all things men. From Fedora wearing playboys to laid-back model glam to suits and ties, Topman has everything a stylish city guy could want. This is very smart as it allows the boyfriends/husbands some time to shop for themselves while their other (better) half peruses the other floors of goodness. If you walk anywhere in London (including red carpets), chances are the hot girl or man is wearing something from Topshop or Topman. That's because it embodies the London street look of tons of colors, boho vintage, and maybe one too many nods to the neon 80's. But hey, it's super fun and seriously fashion forward and- just wait- it will be invading the rest of America soon.

Piercing Fine Jewelry at Venus by Maria Tash

Ever wonder where the likes of Britney Spears, Jessica Alba, and Christina Aguilera get their, um, naval jewelry? Celebrities, including men (Mickey Rourke is a client), go to the custom, classy, one-of-a-kind designs for pierced body parts at Venus by Maria Tash. Picture 9Belly button rings, nose piercings, and even multiple earrings tend to look more trashy than classy, but not with Maria Tash's designs. All her jewelry is made of the finest metals and stones like 18k white gold, diamonds, and even rare opals. Her famous "floating"naval piece highlights the top part of the piercing  so your belly button is bare with a glimmering piece highlighting it on top. The jewelry also comes with some bells and whistles, like the internal threading that guarantees no tearing of the piercing, custom post lengths for different sized bodies, and custom designs that are interchangeable and can be updated at any time. If you don't have a piercing, that's not a problem. Upstairs, Venus by Maria Tash offers a relaxing, clean, and very private piercing area that is more like a spa than a piercing parlor (Sex and the City's Cynthia Nixon had all her daughters pierced here) as well as pierce-free jewelry like rings and necklaces.

Rita Hazan: Color Knows No Better

RitaHazanWhen Oprah features you- twice- and Jessica Simpson cheats on the colorist she made famous to be in your hands, you must be someone of high quality. You must be colorist Rita Hazan. By her humble personality and youthful appearance, one would never know they were in the hands of a beauty master. So our correspondent was shocked to see that when Rita Hazan starts to foil it’s as if a kung-fu ninja has emerged. Rita uses a special folding technique, almost like the FlipFold, that allows the time-consuming process to go remarkably fast with each foil being of the same size. While this may seem like an accomplishment in itself, it’s the mixture she uses in the back that is true genius. Rita takes time to listen to her clients and hear what they cannot express themselves, ending with results that near perfection. And the color lasts nearly forever in hair terms; the only reason to touch one’s hair after emerging from the salon is to touch up the roots, but never the color. To add to the experience, make sure to get the special protein hair treatment that leaves even the most butchered of blondes absolutely shiny. So, sure, stylists get all the credit for the “perfect” cut, but anyone who dyes their hair knows that finding the “perfect” color is nearly impossible. From personal experience, we know Rita Hazan makes the impossible perfectly possible.
