Learn Floral Design At Ovando!

Ovando Floral design is not just an art, it's an experience. Under the instruction of Ovando's designers, participants will get to take an inside peek into the incredible world of floral design. Each of our single-session classes will discuss varying themes and design principles, as well as some of the modern design philosophies which define Ovando's signature style. Ovando is not just classes, it has a beautiful array of flowers and floral arrangements and fragrances for any occasion, for home to corporate events. Sandra de Ovando has become an influential force in New York’s design milieu. Sandra discovered exotic flowers, plants and fruits that she began incorporating into her designs – there the signature style was born that today defines Ovando’s dynamic compositions and custom installations. In 2003, Sandra opened Ovando’s West Village luxury boutique. The space was accredited for its distinctive décor and brilliantly crafted window installations, and Sandra’s dramatic compositions, recognized for their love of color and natural sophistication, became the favorite of New York’s elite, including celebrities, high-end restaurants, fashion houses and luxury hotels. Today, after sizable expansion, including the opening of a 2,500 square foot production studio, a second boutique on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, and the launch of a dedicated event production wing, Ovando has blossomed into one of New York’s most sought after design & event production firms. Under Sandra’s direction and impeccable eye, the company has won international acclaim for its work with prestigious clients to the likes of Hermes, The US Open Tennis Association, Donna Karan, Four Seasons, Saks Fifth Avenue, and The MOMA, to name only a few. From stunning floral installations, custom props & moody lighting, and the full-scale construction of breathtaking displays and environments, Ovando is a dazzling celebration of form, function, and flowers. Vist ovandony.com for more information. Visit the Madison Ave Location at 19 East 65th Street New York, NY 10065 or the West Village Location at 337 Bleecker Street New York, NY 10014

The MoMA Store

The MoMa store in Soho is one of my favorite places to shop for creative items. They offer a large variety of cool, quirky objects, from toys, books, prints, to jewelry, accessories, and home deco products. It is certainly one of the best stores to shop during the gift season, as there is something for everybody. However, I highly recommend it to those who simply want to spoiled themselves and buy something ‘cool’ at an affordable price. As you can probably guess, every object is very modern, and unique, being that an electronic watch, a plastic chair, or a croc woven rug. If you are only visiting New York, I recommend the MoMA store, as highly as I recommend the Museum with the same name. 81 Spring St New York, NY 10012 (646) 613-1367

The Fabulous ABC Home

ABC Carpet is more than a store. This stunning place feels more like a museum, where you can take home your favorite pieces. The six floor flagship located in Manhattan at 888 Broadway and 19thStreet, is a combination of exhibits of European antiques, vintage goods, Asian rugs, glittering chandeliers, gigantic statues, modern pieces of furniture, and much more. Despite the variety of styles which they sell, everything is beautifully exhibited, and blends in perfectly. Most people go there to shop, but there are many people – including myself, who go there just for the visual experience. Yes, their items are luxurious, and they come at a high price, but ABC Carpet is truly the wonderland of home deco. 888 Broadway New York, NY 10003 (212) 473-3000

Update Your Closet at Beacon’s Closet

For the most sought-after trends and vintage pieces look no further then Beacon's Closet in where else but hipster-ville Williamsburg. This warehouse converted into a consignment shop can't really be called a shop; it is three huge rooms full of men's and women's clothes, shoes, bags, accessories, and home goods that run the gambit from retro-chic to sleek and sexy to straight-up street wear. There are not many places that you can get La Rock striped booty shorts, Levis in every wash imaginable and Nike's in every color imaginable, a white Calvin Klein rouched mini dress – for under twenty-five bucks! – silver Costume National pumps, light blue boat shoes, and an Andy Warhol look book; but, at Beacon's Closet you can. All the goods are lightly used and formerly loved, with price tags that may shock you, in a good way. And if you are looking to unload your old duds they do that for you here too, but remember, only bring in the fabulous pieces as this is not your average Salvation Army type thrift shop – this place is hip and caters to that crowd.3018558507_9f1914bea4_o

Scandalous to Fabulous at New Limelight Marketplace

It's hard to believe the once infamous nightclub Limelight-that was once an Episcopal church turned into a scandalous late night party house- is now a chichi mall. There's a doorman in a marble lobby of the new Limelight Marketplace, a chandelier on every ceiling, and exquisite – read, expensive – designer pajamas available from Olatz that you can wear in bed, while you eat artisan chocolate from Mariebelle Cacao Bar & Cafe.

On the first floor, formerly the main dance floor, there are Havianas and Hunter boots in every color imaginable, on the balconies there are flower arrangements from Barbara Scott (that might break the bank if you're not careful), and rows of dainty handmade jewels from Tina Tang. And in the once co-ed bathroom that posted naked pictures of porn stars, you will find classy Brocade home furnishings fit for a modern princess.

In short, the Limelight Marketplace has it all for the ultimate upscale New York, however ironic, shopping experience. But lost on this irony the Limelight Marketplace is not. Many of the boutique stalls are set up around little bars that serve wares instead of alcohol: at Alexander West you can order a custom (bespoke!) men's dress shirt and at Petrossian you can order ten different types off caviar – if that's what you're into. There are mannequins dressed as club kids on the main floor and there are antique bobbles from Old Hollywood on display in front of an enormous stained glass tryptic on the balcony. Shopping at the Limelight Marketplace is truly a unique experience – especially if you have experienced it in its former gritty glory.

Two Spots for One Stop Shopping At Bloomingdale’s

For the stylish New York shopper only one stop is necessary: Bloomingdale’s. They are on top of every trend and have more brands than you're even aware exist. In the denim department you'll find J Brand, Joe's Jeans, and 7 For All Mankind for miles; Rebecca Minkoff totes, and COMME des GARCONS wallets in the handbag department; Marc by Marc Jacobs ballet flats, Diane von Furstenberg clogs, and Stuart Weitzman heels of all types in shoes, and then there's still more. For men, Bloomingdale's has Theory, Converse, Paul Smith, and John Varvatos shoes, clothes and outerwear. They have funky home goods, they have luxury jewelry finds, they even have celeb skin secret La Mer. This is, after all, a department store- New York style.

The old world charm of the Flagship Bloomingdale's on Lexington is enchanting, but to get down to shopping business the younger (and more European) clientele tend towards the Bloomingdale’s in SoHo. Either way, floors upon floors of designer and hard-to-find boutique brands await. And when you are done shopping for yourself, you can repent for your shopping sins by buying something for mom in the Home department - Le Creuset is available in ten colors - or for your niece in the Kid's department - Ralph Lauren Polos for little ones come in all sorts of colors.

The Scoop On The Latest Fashion

Scoop's byline is "the ultimate closet." And how else could this - Alice & Olivia tunics, Zac Posen gowns, Tom Binns jewelry, Theory blazers, Helmut Lang tees, Marc Jacobs clutches, Vince camis, exclusive Stewart Weitzman heels and flats, Ya-Ya skirts, and Acne jeans - be described? Ultimate, for starters, because that's just the women's section. The men's, kid's, and home sections meaPicture 49sure up accordingly with brands like DSquared and Chip & Pepper. For one-stop fashion shopping there are three Scoop locations in New York City to chose from. The SoHo Scoop, which is aptly referred to as the Mega-Scoop, is where you will find current runway trends and staples alike from every hip designer you've ever lusted over. Translation: this store is huge and has it all. The West Village Scoop houses a concept store that is referred to as "the ultimate attic" and tends more towards Ileana Makri jewelry, Havaiana flip-flops, and Freecity hoodies. And for uptowners, well, there's the uptown Scoop. But regardless of location, the Scoop philosophy of shopping remains the same: all the clothes and accessories are organized by trend, color, and type so that the ever time-strapped New York shopper can find exactly what they want, right along side the right pieces to compliment what they came shopping for.

Stylish to the Exotic at Pearl River Department Store

Teas, slippers, lamps, party supplies, stationary, fengshui, window blinds, ceramics, bags, lanterns, condiments, kitchenware, and chinese dolls are a few of what fills the shelves at Pearl River. Clearly,  Pearl River isn't your average department store- or even store for that matter. As an intriguing blend between two very different cultures, Pearl River is the first Chinese American department store. Stepping into the SoHo store, one is immediately overcome with unique colors and never-before-seen (in the West, at least) toys and trinkets. The three-story store in the middle of SoHo is constantly expanding, like the new 10,000 foot home department.  Needless to say, it's a one-stop shop for everything you may need, Chinese or American.

Rita Hazan: Color Knows No Better

RitaHazanWhen Oprah features you- twice- and Jessica Simpson cheats on the colorist she made famous to be in your hands, you must be someone of high quality. You must be colorist Rita Hazan. By her humble personality and youthful appearance, one would never know they were in the hands of a beauty master. So our correspondent was shocked to see that when Rita Hazan starts to foil it’s as if a kung-fu ninja has emerged. Rita uses a special folding technique, almost like the FlipFold, that allows the time-consuming process to go remarkably fast with each foil being of the same size. While this may seem like an accomplishment in itself, it’s the mixture she uses in the back that is true genius. Rita takes time to listen to her clients and hear what they cannot express themselves, ending with results that near perfection. And the color lasts nearly forever in hair terms; the only reason to touch one’s hair after emerging from the salon is to touch up the roots, but never the color. To add to the experience, make sure to get the special protein hair treatment that leaves even the most butchered of blondes absolutely shiny. So, sure, stylists get all the credit for the “perfect” cut, but anyone who dyes their hair knows that finding the “perfect” color is nearly impossible. From personal experience, we know Rita Hazan makes the impossible perfectly possible.
