4. All the Capital Celebrates MLK Jr 1/10-/18/10

Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech resonated and transformed the world from the stage at Lincoln Memorial in DC. So what bPicture 8etter way to celebrate this historic man’s birthday than in the nation’s capital.

There are a plethora of events taking place to commemorate MLK’s life and work all across the capital. The Choral Arts Society will be kicking off the celebrations for a tribute on January 10th, a Georgetown tribute, an observance at the Department of Interior, and of course a service will be taking place where it all started at the Lincoln Memorial. There’s also a film festival and a holiday weekend family festival in the days leading up to the big holiday. Phew!

Take it Slow at Theodore Roosevelt Island

Whether you’d like to take a run or enjoy the picturesque scenery and touching memorial, the Theodore Roosevelt Island is a beautiful place to visit. Located in the middle of the Potomac River, the island was re-named and made a national memorial to commemorate the heroic 26th U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt. Enjoy the scenic beauty of this island, but make sure to bring your walking shoes. The only way to access the island is through a footbridge from Arlington, Virginia and no cars or bicycles are allowed.
