Tavern on Camac: Nightclub, Piano Bar and Restaurant in One
Philadelphia is known for pioneering on many fronts throughout
history, and not to be forgotten is the evolution of Philly’s Gayborhood and acceptance of gay rights in its community. The Tavern on Camac in Washington Square West is one of the premiere LGBT spots in the city and is proudly open 7 nights a week to anyone and everyone.
The Tavern on Camac (T.O.C.) is basically divided into three parts – the restaurant, the piano bar and the nightclub. The restaurant, called Terra, serves up new American cuisine with everything from arctic char to sliders and quesadillas. Ascend Lounge is the dance party upstairs, and the only thing you will be wishing is that the dance floor was a bit bigger to accommodate all the fabulous dancers.
Which leaves us with the Pièce de résistance – the piano bar. Whether you’re singing Britney Spears or the best of My Fair Lady, you’ll feel like you’re a part of the best choir ever to sing together. And whether it’s the stiff drinks talking or just the nostalgia from the piano riffs, you’ll be having a great time no matter what.
All-Inclusive Atlanta Philharmonic is so Next Gen
Less than a decade old, the Atlanta Philharmonic Orchestra’s youth represents its modern approach and audience. The volunteer, non-profit Atlanta Philharmonic Orchestra differs in that its all-inclusive members either identify with the LGBT community or are LGBT-friendly.
Conducted by Mirna Ogrizovic-Ciric, a Berry College professor who was born in Croatia but grew up in Serbia, the Atlanta Philharmonic Orchestra’s main goal is to share beautiful music that is inclusive of all. To that end, the group has delighted audiences by performing compositions from heavyweights such as Mozart, Bach, Beethoven and Haydn.
Guest soloists have been as impressive as its classical repertoire and include pianist Paolo André Gualdi, who grew up in Italy and has received great praise in Europe and the U.S., as well as Martin Gueorguiev, a cellist who earned first prize at Bulgaria’s National Competition for German and Austrian Music. When it comes to spreading beautiful music in Atlanta, the Atlanta Philharmonic Orchestra remains in a class of its own.
Historic Laughs at New Tommy’s Comedy Lounge
If you’re looking for something fun to do for everyone of all ages, head over to Tommy’s Comedy Lounge for a great night of laughs. Boston’s newest comedy club, located at The Charles Playhouse in the historic Theater District, offers live stand-up comedy every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night.
You never know who you might see on stage that night. The comedy house has showcased well known local talent, including Tony V, Gary Gulman and Steve Sweeney of There’s Something About Mary and Me Myself and Irene fame as well as the annual Magners Comedy Festival.
Every Thursday night, there is a comedy showcase at 8:30 p.m. for a cheap $8 admission ticket. Tommy’s new showcase for gay and lesbian comedians will be held the last Thursday of every month beginning this month. Typically, most shows are under $20 per ticket making for a reasonably priced and affordable night on the town.
