Impressive, Beautiful Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum

Isabella Stewart Gardner was an heiress and something of a black sheep of late-19th- and early-20th-century Boston society: She was a rabid Red Sox and horse-racing fan. Funded by a $1.75 million inheritance, Gardner personally designed this four-story building, modeled on a Venetian palazzo, to house her extensive collection of art and antiquities.

The collection includes 15th-century Flemish tapestries, a first edition of Dante’s Divine Comedy, inscrutable documents like the one signed by Marie Antoinette, and paintings by Monet, Sargent, Holbein, Whistler, Rembrandt, Matisse, Michelangelo, and Titian. A visit to the museum is like meandering through a treasure chest of a wealthy, if eccentric, great aunt.

75 Years of Excellence at SFMOMA

The SFMOMA is one of the most inventive museums of modern and contemporary art. Celebrating its 75th anniversary with a brand new rooftop garden, it has something for every taste: traditional paintings and sculptures to new-age mixed media. The brilliant collection features contemporary greats such as Henri Matisse, Alfred Stieglitz, Marcel Duchamp, and of course, the infamous Jackson Pollock.

Complete with an architectural model of Eliot Noye’s Westinghouse 1964 New York World’s Fair Pavilion, as seen in the Men in Black movie, and Andy Warhol’s Red Liz, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is an excellent and eye-opening museum.

2. Last Chance for Rare Picasso & More 12/1-12/12/09

Picasso is known for his abstract paintings, but he was also a talented ceramic artist. Having one of the largest collections of Picasso ceramics to be offered by a private gallery, The Andrew Weiss Gallery is proudly presenting Picasso Ceramics (1947-1969). For the first time, more than 50 rare ceramic works are being made available to collectors. Picasso’s quest to master all mediums is demonstrated through this exhibition that also includes his drawings, etchings, and lithographs.

Additionally, the exhibit includes works by Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Marc Chagall, Henri Matisse, and other 20^th century masters.
