Jazid: Icon of live music on South Beach

Surviving in the same location on South Beach is unto itself a testament to longevity and Jazid can proudly boast they’ve done it for 14 years. It’s all about the live music experience at Jazid, something the area is not necessarily known for.

They don’t pigeonhole themselves into one genre here either, anything goes. The list of live performers screams diversity. Feneiva plays on Tuesdays, performing in both English and Spanish and blending salsa, reggae and acoustic. Afro Kumbe on Wednesdays is made up of members of Miami’s favorite Latin fusion band Locos por Juana who are lighting up the festival and nightlife scene all over Miami. On Fridays Kulcha Shok Muzik frees up the stage for reggae bands, a different one each week.

They don’t skimp on the drink specials here either, kamikazes one night and aguardiente, the drink of choice in many Latin American countries, another.

Dance the Night Away at Madrone Art Bar

For an upscale time on a budget, head to Madrone Art Bar on Divisidero for fun drinks, a chill, friendly crowd and lots and lots of dancing.

Things really heat up Tuesday nights for Boogaloo $2 Tuesdays with the local band “Steppin” playing live music until closing and $2 Tecate beer and $4 Jameson all night long. Fridays and Saturdays also get going with drink specials and theme nights,  including a Michael Jackson/Prince dance-off.

You also can’t beat the decor. Madrone highlights different artists and their work – from photographs to paintings and mixed media – every month, making each visit feel like your first.

They also have a photo booth in the front of the bar so even if you forget your camera, you can still have memories of a great night.

5. Music from Around the World at globalFEST 1/1/10

Picture 6Music fans love to be the first to “discover” bands and for seven years globalFEST has been a festival that showcases artists from all over the world whoare on the brink of U.S. success. All the acts are unique in their style and culture as they generally represent music that is different from what we hear Stateside.

In January, such diverse styles as French Gypsy jazz with breakbeats, Argentine club sounds, Afro-Colombian music, Central Asian avant rock, New York salsa, and so much more will be playing. This festival always brings unique music that you can discover before all your friends.

Musicians from the world of pop, rock and electronica all find their home in a seemingly unconventionPicture 51al setting: A vintage opera house that can holds up to 3,000. Hidden by a conventional midtown office-building, you would never know that some of the most significant groups of our time have orchestrated blow-out events, making the Hammerstein anything but an ordinary music venue in Manhattan. The ballroom opened in 1906 as a classical opera house. Then in 1910 it turned into a variety show house… followed by a conversion into a movie palace. During the Depression, it became a Freemason’s temple, and was then abandoned in the 70’s. Now, the Hammerstein is seat-free, allowing mobs in for general admission seating/standing.
