Staten Island Ferry

The Staten Island Ferry provides 20 million people a year (60,000 passengers a day not including weekend days) with ferry service between St. George on Staten Island and Whitehall Street in lower Manhattan. The ferry is the only non-vehicular mode of transportation between Staten Island and Manhattan. NYC DOT operates and maintains the nine vessel fleet as well as the St. George Ferry Terminal on Staten Island, Whitehall Ferry Terminal in Manhattan, the City Island and Hart Island Facilities, The Battery Maritime Building and all floating dock building equipment. The Staten Island Ferry is run by the City of New York for one pragmatic reason: To transport Staten Islanders to and from Manhattan. Yet, the 5 mile, 25 minute ride also provides a majestic view of New York Harbor and a no-hassle, even romantic, boat ride, for free! One guide book calls it “One of the world’s greatest (and shortest) water voyages.” From the deck of the ferry you will have a perfect view of The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. You’ll see the skyscrapers and bridges of Lower Manhattan receding as you pull away and coming into focus again as you return. A typical weekday schedule involves the use of five boats to transport approximately 60,000 passengers daily (109 daily trips). During the day, between rush hours, boats are regularly fueled and maintenance work is performed. Terminals are cleaned around the clock and routine terminal maintenance is performed on the day shift. On weekends, three boats are used (75 trips each Saturday and 68 trips each Sunday). Over 35,000 trips are made annually.

It’s Easy to Get Lost in Fairmount Park

Fairmount Park is where you go to hike, bike, blade, boat, float, jog—or just simply walk around, but this is no ordinary park. Being the world’s largest municipal park, this park encompasses 92,00 acres and includes 62 neighborhoods!!! This extraordinary park is home to a number of museums, stables, mansions, boathouses, and historical buildings such as the Bellaire Manor with its floor to ceiling wood paneling that would make any art historian’s mouth water. Grown by John Bartram in the 1700’s, America’s oldest living botanic garden can also be found here. At Fairmount Park, quantity means quality as well.

Golf to Horseback Riding at Rock Creek Park

Picture 14Located in the heart of D.C., Rock Creek Park is not your average run-of-the-mill park. There is much more to do than just your usual stroll or picnic: play 18-holes at the Rock Creek Golf Course; swing a racket at the tennis courts; rollerblade or bike; rent a kayak, canoe or even a small sailboat at the boat center.

Want something more unique? Take a horseback riding lesson on the 13 miles of wide, dirt and gravel bridle trails in the northern section of the park.

But for those who just want to relax, this national park is great for that as well. Beautiful trees, fields, wild animals (coyotes!), and the serene sights and sounds of Rock Creek make a perfect setting for a hike on one of the many paths. You can even have a cell phone tour in specific areas. Just call the number and listen to a park ranger give a two-minute narration on various aspects of the park.

Alcatraz

Take a boat ride to and a tour through the small island full of rich history. Alcatraz was one of the first US forts on the west coast, an infamous federal penitentiary, and occupied by Native Americans for eighteen months. Alcatraz also has gardens, tide pools, and a view of the city like none other. For a highly entertaining and educational excursion, visit Alcatraz Island.
