Check Out The New Bar The Elroy!

The Elroy is a new, “futuristic” bar that opened up on Memorial Day weekend, at 1423 H St NE in the Atlas Theater District. The name refers to the Jetson’s character. Karl Graham, who was a partner in New York Avenue Beach Bar, is behind the neighborhood bar.

Graham describes the spot as “a nice little neighborhood bar where you come in and people know your name.” The two-story space is located a quarter mile from where Graham grew up.

Some of the more “futuristic” flourishes to go with the name: outlets and USB ports along the bar, TVs in the bathroom mirrors, frosted glass restroom mirrors that switch on and off, and funky glassware. The Elroy will specialize in cocktails in “fancy glasses, really crazy cocktail glasses,” Graham says. There will also be a limited bar menu with five to 10 items—”nothing extravagant.”

Summer Fun At The MCA Denver!

The Museum of Contemporary Art Denver (MCA Denver) explores the art and culture of our time through rotating exhibitions and public educational programs. Featuring regional, national and international artists, MCA Denver offers a wide range of exhibitions promoting creative experimentation with art and ideas. Through adult and youth education programs and other creative events, the museum serves as an innovative forum for a culturally engaged community.

MCA Denver is a non-collecting institution acting as an incubator for art and ideas, artistic exchange, and dialogue. The MCA has a fun Summer Camp With Adult Drinks program running through August with Bartender-in-Residence on Wednesday Nights
from 5–9PM where Denver’s top bartenders drop by to counsel campers on the art and craft of a tasty cocktail. Each beverage counselor will create signature drinks on the outdoor rooftop bar on Wednesday evenings from 5–9PM. During June the Beverage Counselor is from Steubens. On the actual class:

Three switch-offs between treadmill and floor – we didn’t lose much time on the transitions because the floor sections used minimal equipment.
Lots of lunging and tons of multi-tasking exercises. Some up-and-down step work.
We did a few partner exercises – which were super fun and set a great tone for the class. On the treadmills, we took turns sprinting with our neighbor – the resting partner cheered for the sprinting partner. On the floor, we pushed our partner’s legs to the ground repeatedly for an old-school abs sesh.

You Never Know What to Expect At DNA Lounge

For a rambunctious good time head down to the DNA Lounge in the Mission. You never know what to expect at this funky and fun spot and there’s something different every night of the week.

The Lounge hosts the monthly Hubba Hubba Revue burlesque show – a full stage production with musical acts, dancing and aerial artists that is not to be missed. They also have the monthly drag show, Trannyshack, which has a different theme every time and various bands perform throughout the month.

The club also hosts Bootie – the biggest mashup party in San Francisco. Trust us, there is never a dull moment at the DNA Lounge and you never known who you’ll bump into or what you’ll see. It’s an SF original.

Charles Hayden Planetarium: Reopening After Massive Renovation

Checking out the stars on a clear night in Boston can be a hard find until now. The Charles Hayden Planetarium at the Museum of Science recently underwent a $9 million facelift where you can now spend an evening out under 9,100 stars in the most technologically advanced digital theater in New England. The surface of the dome is used to project the night sky to offer a virtual experience of flying through the universe. It just doesn’t get any cooler than this. Dixie, is the fast-talking Tupperware lady who packed her catalogues and left it all to travel the country selling America’s favorite food storage device. Broadway Bodies with Thomas Farely.

Broadway Cardio” at Broadway Bodies was a better workout, and “Dance Workout” at Downtown Dance Factory was definitely more hip. Both had enthusiastic instructors who eased my first-timers’ nervousness. The fun factor of each was about even for me—I recommend trying whichever type of music is more your style. Both studios also offer additional classes, from Michael Jackson Mondays to Rock n’ Roll Ballet.

Distrito Serves Modern & Creative Mexican

Distrito serves modern Mexican food in a fun and quirky environment – Pepto-Bismol pink walls and VW bugs as booths to be exact. Located in University City among three of Philadelphia’s major universities, Distrito is always packed with the young and young at heart that are ready to have a good time. And Chef Jose Garces (of Top Chef and Philadelphia restaurant fame) is ready all the time for the taco-loving crowds: Distrito is open for brunch on Saturdays and Sundays, lunch 5 days a week and dinner 7 nights a week.

The first floor bar and tequila lounge serves a fun cantina menu, full of all different types of tacos, enchiladas and especialidades, then when served alongside a house specialty margarita, you are good to go. For the heavier appetite or a night out with friends, it’s best to get a table and be prepared to share. All of the dishes are based on traditional Mexican ingredients but modernized – like the Fish Tacos with yellowtail, chipotle remoulade, avocado, red cabbage and lime juice, or the Skirt Steak Nachos with refried beans and queso mixto.

Tasting menus are also always available, with tequila pairings, which are not recommended for the faint of heart.

PBR Debauchery at The Barbary

If you need to forget about your work week and that creep ex-boy/girlfriend that won’t stop calling you, The Barbary is your place for all night dancing, drinking and debauchery. The Barbary has some of the cheapest drinks in town ($2 PBRs are the Philly Special) and 6-nights a week it hosts some of the craziest dance parties you have ever experienced.

Monthly calendars are released on its MySpace page with events happening every night of the week. Sundays are Karaoke nights, Wednesdays are the Bouffant Bangouts featuring 50s and 60s music, and Mondays are the Indie Dance parties. The rest of the month is filled in with a satisfying variety of top-notch dance music. If you’re lucky to be in town, the DJ DeeJay “Madonna Michael Price” shows are a must.

And if you just can’t get in the mood without the disco ball, they have that covered, too.

The Standard Sets It Very, Very High

Whether you are poolside or cozying up in The Purple Lounge, nothing is standard at The Standard. It only takes one step into the lobby to realize that you are at one of the swankiest hotels in Los Angeles. Filled with modern furniture and a staff that looks like they were cast from Ford Models, The Standard upholds its reputation of combining trendy elegance with a retro chic vibe.

If you are a lucky patron of the hotel, make sure your room has views to match its interior. Placed on Sunset Boulevard, views overlooking Hollywood are as worthy as the price you are paying for it.

For those just looking for a night out on the town, this is probably the only hotel you will ever see where the lobby gets as much action as a Las Vegas Casino. If you venture further into the 24/7 restaurant, you can find yourself in a club-like experience with flashing neon lights and select DJs.

Though the rooms and lobby are equally as amazing, nothing truly beats being poolside at The Standard. While sipping cocktails in the sun, don’t be surprised to run into celebrities who also ventured out to frolic under the shades of this fabulous pool.

Overall, the Standard can please any need, from the clubber to the sunbather. If you are looking for an over-the-top experience, you might as well go Standard.

4. Have a Splash of Science with Your Cocktail at Exploratorium 1/20/10

In one of the coolest science-meets-reality exhibits, for one night only the Exploratorium is hosting mixologists from across the city for the Science of Cocktails. Hands-on as always, bartenders from hotspots like 83 Proof and Orson will be mixing the drinks, while guests will be participating in experiments about alcohol, inebriation, hangovers, and cocktail mixing.

Not only will guests be learning from the experiments, they can also get a free bartending lesson as the masters show the secret behind their craft. This is one event where drinking is both fun and for a good cause as this event will raise funds for the Exploratorium Museum.

2. One of the U.S.’s Best NYE Parties at Drake Hotel 12/31/09

If you’re unsure of what city and what location you would like to ring in the New Year, then look no further than the luxurious Drake Hotel and its famous New Year’s Eve party. The party, run by Chicago Scene, has been voted as one of the top 10 NYE parties by AOL Citysearch and is always sold out.
