Royal Palms Shuffleboard Club: ushering in a new era of shuffleboard!
The Royal Palms Shuffleboard Club, may be the first shuffleboard club in New York, and it’s trying to turn the pastime favored by septuagenarians into the next Ping-Pong among the borough’s barhopping millennials.
Emporium Arcade Bar
This Wicker Park newcomer features 30 arcade games and pinball machines from the ’80s and ’90s, including Pacman, Donkey Kong, NBA Jam, Streetfighter and Smash TV. There is no cover charge, and tokens cost 25 cents for one play. Games line the walls of the space and there are adjacent shelves to hold your drink while you play.
1. Viva Italia at Italian Market Festival May 15-16
Taking place in America’s oldest and largest working outdoor market, the Italian Market Festival is a huge, multi-block festival that takes over the heart of South Philadelphia. With the traffic closed off, the streets are lined with vendors offering every Italian delicacy possible, including fresh sausage and peppers, antipasto salads, roast pork sandwiches, cheeses, cured meats, an infinite array of pastries, famous mango roses, and more. There are also gift and cookware shops as well as street-side merchants selling specially prepared foods just for the festival. Nearby restaurants also extend their table service to the sidewalk so that customers can enjoy the festival atmosphere while dining. In addition to the food, there will be two days of free concerts on three different stages featuring classic rock and party band favorites. If that wasn’t enough, rounding out the weekend is a half ball tournament along with other competitions and games.
5. SoCal’s Largest Carnaval Primavera Celebration April 9-11
For the last 17 years, the Carnaval Primavera has been one of the largest Mardi Gras festival celebrations in Southern California. Spanning nine (!) full city blocks and lasting for three days, Carnaval Primavera will feature food from around the globe, as well as arts, crafts and commercial booths. As for entertainment, there will be live family entertainment on two stages, special exhibits, rides, and games. And don’t worry; the rides are for all ages. With upwards of 350,000 people expected to attend, the Carnaval Primavera is free to the public and a guaranteed good time for all.
Black and Read and Funky All Over
If Tattered Cover is Denver’s 800-lb. gorilla, Black and Read is its bespectacled bookworm burrowing into the local literary underground. Granted, new and used books in dizzying array—or disarray, as the case may be—aren’t the half of it: indie music buffs browse the aisles for obscure recordings on vinyl, while fanatical gamers (are there any other kind?) gather to gab about the latest releases with employees who are, of course, almost comically knowledgeable about the inventory, be it MMPORGs or 1980s SoCal punk. Owner Danny Graul, for his part, is a true cinephile, and it shows in his selection of film texts.
Ultimately, Black and Read is less about finding any purchase in particular than about losing yourself in the search.
Red Sox Nation Loves Fenway Park

While Fenway Park may be known as one of the smallest stadiums in the major leagues and the oldest major league stadium in current use, it also may be the one with the most history. Originally opened in 1912 in Kenmore Square, the home of the Boston Red Sox has been revamped and expanded in later years to include the Green Monster, the 37-foot-high left-field wall, right field roof, clubhouse with upscale dining and even dugout seating. While there has been talk of replacing the old wooden seats with newer more comfortable ones, die hard fans have continuously voted against the upgrades to preserve the history it is so well known for. Be sure to get your tickets as soon as they go on sale for the season as every game has sold out since May 15, 2003. The whole experience is steeped in tradition – from Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline” being sung by fans during the eighth inning, the manual scoreboard to the organ to the Boston-accented hecklers.
Insider’s Tip: Remember, Massachusetts liquor laws are strict; beer vendors do not wander the stands, so you’ll have to get your brew yourself. And bring ID, even if you haven’t needed it in years.
