The locally acclaimed Buntport Theater Company will make you think again. This six-person troupe collaborates and hosts a variety of different projects, from original plays to monthly themed open mic nights—The Most Worthless Thing I Own, for instance—almost all of which are marked by the writer-director-actors’ characteristic brand of risky and borderline absurd wit (as the titles of recent productions Realism: The Mythical Brontosaurus and Kafka on Ice suggest). That’s not to say the Buntport Theater Company doesn’t do serious, heart wrenching work; it’s just that the company never forgets to have fun with the audience, including pint-sized playgoers (the seasonal family series tRUNks brings comic books to life).

5. Shakespeare in the Park 1/15- 1/17/10
You don’t have to wait for summer to enjoy Shakespeare in the Park. The company will kick-start 2010 with a three-day production of The Taming of the Shrew in ritzy Coconut Grove.
This Shakespearean classic is about Petruchio, a newlywed man whose actions lead the audience to believe he’s quite insane, when he’s only worried that marrying a headstrong woman will inevitably lead to cuckoldry, making him the center of public ridicule. (Cuckoldry – having a wife cheat or be publicly domineering.)
Along with the production, Children’s tea with Story hour will be January 16 at noon.
50 Years of Funny: Taming of the Flu
50 Years of Funny. Hell yeah. Bravo to Chicago’s Second City which has been going strong for 50 straight years producing some of the world’s favorite comedians and productions that push the envelope. This season, why not make fun of the flu? After all – it’s everywhere, coughing, sneezing, calling in sick for work – and you can believe the Second City cast will capitalize on it with their newest production, The Taming of the Flu.

While hope and change won’t stop you from getting sick, they may help you pay the hospital bills. And if you believe that, we have a great policy to sell you. We’re sick of the flu, sick of the health care system, and sick of the cameras catching us running the red lights. Although technology & Twitter have supposedly made us a smaller world, people have never felt farther apart. Taming of the Flu connects with everyone: put-upon Chicago cabbies, Canadian expatriates and even a visit with French President Nicolas Sarkozy and his wife, Carla Bruni.
Leave it to the Second City to incorporate so much more than just one topic. Word of the wise: snag your tickets fast because they’re becoming harder and harder to cough up.
