4. Roam Traffic-Free Streets for LA Marathon March 20-21

IncrediPicture 18ble weather, beautiful people, what’s there to hate about LA? Traffic! Well once a year the cars clear for runners and bikers for the 25th annual LA Marathon. Unlike many major cities where the marathon is a one-day event, in LA it’s a weekend long event. On Saturday, check out (or join!) the manageable 5K race at Dodger Stadium. After the hearty run, there’s the Win Forever Motivational Dinner hosted by none other than legendary sports figure, USC head coach Pete Carroll.

Of course, let’s not forget the big day. On Sunday, the marathon, with a brand new course this year, will start at Dodger Stadium and end, where else, than the beach at Santa Monica Pier. The course runs through some of LA’s most diverse neighborhoods and famous landmarks, and an added bonus will be the “Block Parties,” or live performances space along the route to entertain the spectators.

4. 2 in 1: Atlanta Marathon & Sightseeing March 21

Picture 15On March 21, the best long distance runners in the nation will flock to Atlanta to showcase their skill in the ING Georgia Marathon. The marathon is a two for one for visitors of the city: a great event as well as an excuse to see all of Atlanta.

The staging area for the start and finish is in Centennial Olympic Park in the heart of downtown Atlanta. Participants will then run downtown through Georgia State University, over the Jackson Street bridge, and then onto the Martin Luther King Jr. Historic District by the house where Dr. King was born. The course continues weaving its way through the Poncey-Highland, the Agnes Scott College campus, by quaint Decatur Square. Runners will then tear through the Emory University campus, and through the Druid Hills and Virginia-Highland neighborhoods. The race finishes with a run through Midtown across to the Georgia Tech campus, and the runners will return downtown via Marietta Street to cross the finish line in the park!

After a champion is crowned the real fun begins in Centennial Olympic Park where there will be plenty of food and fun to go around for the whole afternoon.

4. Rock ‘n Roll Dallas Half Marathon March 14

Picture 22Who says a marathon is all work and no play? Okay, most marathons are only fun after you’ve finished (and survived!), but the Rock ‘n Roll Dallas Half-Marathon is completely the opposite. Dotted along the 13.1 mile course, there are 20 local bands who will be rocking it out and giving the gifted runners a unique playlist to their marathon running. More than that, there will also be Spirited Cheer Squads if runners need an extra boost. After it’s all done, runners and spectators alike will be able to cool down with a post-marathon concert at the Finish Line Village’s main stage. If this race doesn’t sound cool enough, the run is all for a good cause: The Susan G. Komen for the Cure is the Official National Charity.
