Music at The Phillips Collection

Music has been a vital part of the Phillips’s cultural offerings since the museum opened in 1921.The flagship Sunday Concerts is the longest uninterrupted concert series in Washington, D.C., and has enriched the community since 1941, providing a platform for internationally acclaimed musicians and emerging artists at critical moments in their careers.

In partnership with embassies in Washington, the Phillips presents Leading European Composers, which introduces some of Europe’s finest talent to audiences in D.C. Each composer works directly with musicians of their choice, providing a unique dialogue between composer and performer.

Now in its second season our ensemble-in-residence, The Phillips Camerata, continues to carry the Phillips name and remarkable musical history into the concert circuit. Comprised of a flexible roster of leading instrumentalists from the D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York areas, the Camerata offers a range of performances each year under the artistic direction of Caroline Mousset. Bongo’s Cuban Cafe: Swaying hips and Latin rhythms

Owned by Miami’s own Emilio & Gloria Estefan, the golden couple of Latin music in Miami, sitting bayside behind the American Airlines Arena and boasting an atmosphere that won’t quit, it’s obvious that the energy is high at Bongo’s Cuban Cafe.

This is the place to party al night and in Latin style, where deejays play all types of Caribbean music including salsa, merengue, bachata, reggaeton and regional Mexican music. It’s also a good place to catch Latin artists who attend after parties here. When Miami was host to the MTV Video Music Awards, Latin Grammys and Latin Billboard Music Awards the international artists attended after parties here.

The interior decor, purposely filled with palm trees, bongo shaped tables and multi-faceted colorful lighting in bright Caribbean colors, is set up to evoke a tropical island feel.

Optic Nerve Film Festival

The Museum of Contemporary Art will celebrate the 10th anniversary of Optic Nerve, its annual festival of short films and videos by artists from South Florida, with a screening of its 12th rendition on Friday, August 6th at 7:00 and 9:00 p.m. Optic Nerve XII will feature 22 films by 21 artists, all less than five minutes in length, selected from an open call for submissions. The festival is part of MOCA’s ongoing effort to provide new opportunities for South Florida artists. Since the inception of Optic Nerve in 2000, over 150 artists have been featured; many of whom publicly presented their work for the first time in this MOCA program.

2. Summer Series at the Ritzy Boston Harbor Hotel July 1-31

No one puts on seasonal festivals like the landmark Boston Harbor Hotel. Nearly every single night in the summer offers a different performance and theme for travelers and Bostonians alike to enjoy. On Tuesday nights enjoy the Summer Soul, where various R&B bands and artists sing classics from Marvin Gay to Gladys Knight live under the stars. On Wednesday it’s Timeless Tunes, featuring classic music entertainment from the 60’s all the way to the 90’s. On Thursday it’s Blue Barge, where you guessed it, local and national blues artists sing their souls out on stage. And on Friday, it’s Movies by Moonlight, where guests can enjoy movies from classics like The Maltese Falcon, All About Eve, to Raiders of the Lost Ark, while enjoying the award-winning cuisine from BHH’s Chef Daniel Bruce.

3. Theatre Reigns at Capital Fringe Festival July 8-25

The international festival for independent and experimental theatre artists is arriving in Washington DC for its fifth year. Enjoy some of the best theatre – outside the mainstream – from around the world for cheap prices. Featuring a variety of venues like abandoned warehouses and stores, you won’t want to miss out on these controversial, unconventional and interactive performances. You can even meet the artists in workshops that range from basic theatre to an intro to beatboxing. Whatever your interest is, you are bound to find something you like, with over 140 performances in two weeks. Local restaurants and bars are also taking part in this celebration with discounts on meals and drinks before and after shows. Check the website for participating locations.
