Tigertail Productions: Culture of every kind

Veteran cultural group Tigertail Productions, headed up by legendary director Mary Luft, is presenting another season jam-packed with musical and theatrical performances as well as spoken word events.

They’ve been presenting passionate programs in performing and visual arts since 1979 and each year is better than the next. They’re known for pushing the envelope and bringing recognition to lesser-known artists who they feel deserve their time on stage.

Gracing this season’s calendar are Dutch jazz artists the Benjamin Herman Quartet, a variety of spoken word or “WordSpeak” events and workshops, blues legends Henry Gray & the Cats and jazz guitarist Bill Frisell. The Jess Curtis Gravity Dance troupe, featuring dancers from France, Germany, Italy, England and the United States, is an interdisciplinary mixed ability performance. And Japanese couple Eiko & Koma present their provocative performance piece “Raven.”

Tigertail’s performances are held on Miami Beach, in Coral Gables and throughout Miami. Visit their web site for exact locations.

ACME Comedy Theatre: Any Celebrity May Enter

ACME Comedy pic

The ACME Comedy Theatre has become a Los Angeles staple for those looking for a little comedy training or those looking for some entertainment.

The famous theatre is home to a long list of celebrity guests such as Lea Thompson, Joel McHale, and Adam Corolla. Friday and Saturday nights are big nights at the theater where ACME Radio Hour has their Liquid Radio Players perform completely improvised as though they were on old-time radio.

The 99-seat theatre is not only a place to watch shows but a place to learn from the best. The comedy school gives students the chance to learn the ins and outs of sketch, improv and stand-up comedy.

Though the theatre is the perfect place to spend a Friday or Saturday night, the theatre doesn’t have a concession stand and prohibits bringing food or drinks into the theatre.

If you are questioning whether or not to visit the theatre, just remember that Nia Vardalos was discovered by Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks when she was performing. Whether you are looking to discover or be discovered, ACME is the place to be.

Award-Winning Shows at GableStage

Perfecting their theatrical craft for more than three decades, the players at GableStage, led for the last nine seasons by Producing Artistic Director Joseph Adler, whose legendary and provocative productions have been making headlines in Miami since his arrival at the theater, is something no one at this venue takes lightly. Speed the Plow and  A Lesson Before Dying are some of the award-winners and this season’s comedy Speech and Debate and the drama Fifty Words could very well garner more accolades.

The Grand & Fabulous Fox Theater

Picture 20The Fox Theatre is one of the world’s greatest venues for film and the performing arts. When it opened in the 1920’s, it was described as an outlandish, opulent and grandiose monument to excess. The Atlanta Journal description was a kinder picturesque and almost disturbing grandeur beyond imagination.

A mosque like structure, complete with minorities, onion domes and an interior décor of Egyptian grandeur, seated 4,000 people. The interior restored lovingly by the people of Atlanta is a masterpiece. Complete with an indoor Arabian court, it has a sky of flickering stars, spectacular striped canopy overhanging the balconies. The Fox reigns today as a fiercely protected landmark and internationally acclaimed theatre, celebrating more than half a century of film and theatrical productions.

From summer film festivals to Broadway shows, the Fox still generates millions of dollars to the Atlanta economy. You can tour the Fox on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 10am and Saturdays at 10 and 11am.
