Music at The Phillips Collection

Music has been a vital part of the Phillips’s cultural offerings since the museum opened in 1921.The flagship Sunday Concerts is the longest uninterrupted concert series in Washington, D.C., and has enriched the community since 1941, providing a platform for internationally acclaimed musicians and emerging artists at critical moments in their careers.

In partnership with embassies in Washington, the Phillips presents Leading European Composers, which introduces some of Europe’s finest talent to audiences in D.C. Each composer works directly with musicians of their choice, providing a unique dialogue between composer and performer.

Now in its second season our ensemble-in-residence, The Phillips Camerata, continues to carry the Phillips name and remarkable musical history into the concert circuit. Comprised of a flexible roster of leading instrumentalists from the D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York areas, the Camerata offers a range of performances each year under the artistic direction of Caroline Mousset. In July, enjoy screenings of Micmacs, a David-and-Goliath tale where a man tries to destroy weapons manufacturers; Women Without Men, which is an adaptation of a novel chronicling the lives of four Iranian women during the summer of 1953; the newly released Coco Chanel and Igor Stravinsky that shows that passionate affair of two of the twentieth century’s icons; and City of your Final Destination, starring Anthony Hopkins and Laura Linney, of a young Iranian-American academic who seeks permission to write a biography of a Uruguayan novelist. The screenings are at various time on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Brunching Paradise at Sabrina’s Cafe

When you wake up on the weekend and know that the only cure to your wretched margarita-beer-kamikaze-everything-but-the-kitchen-sink hangover is a belly-bursting brunch, Sabrina’s Café will be calling your name. Sabrina’s is located just outside of the Italian Market and offers all the classic comfort food of an all-star brunch menu. The weekly specials are always themed (recently it featured Jersey Shore selections like the “Self Tanner” Mexi Special and the “Situation” burger), which makes it even harder to choose from the already stellar menu.

Tried and true favorites, liPicture 15ke the caramelized Challah french toast, stuffed with cream cheese and bananas topped with vanilla bean maple syrup (say what?!), and the “Barking Chihuahua Breakfast Burrito” rolled up with scrambled eggs, black beans, red peppers, and pepper jack cheese (yo quiero!), will send you full and happy to your post-brunch coma…I mean nap. Shuffle on into Sabrina’s in your Sunday sweatpants and that sweater you swore you’d never step out of the house in, because it’s time to hit that sweet, salty, greasy breakfast goodness.

Insider’s Tip: The lines get long and the wait can be too, so be on the safe side and call ahead, they’ll add your name to the list before you get there!

Date Night at the Cemetery’s Cinespia

When you are looking for a taste of old Hollywood and a way to spice up your love life, there is no better date spot than the Hollywood cemetery. On Sunday nights, thePicture 17 cemetery opens its doors for the hundreds of people who are looking for a cheaper way to go to the movies. With old Hollywood flicks constantly being aired, you feel as though you are truly in another decade.

One of the best parts of Cinespia is that you can turn the experience into your own. People bring blankets, food and even wine as they sprawl onto the lawn and cozy up for a film. The uniqueness of this experience draws a large crowd so make sure to get there early- really early. While this may be the only movie theater you can actually bring your own food into, it is also one of the best experiences when you are looking for a change in scenery, literally.
