Rubirosa – for a memorable slice of pizza

Unless you are in Italy, it is not easy to find a venue where you can have a perfect slice of pizza, in an welcoming environment. Fortunately for New Yorkers, there is Rubirosa , located on Mulberry between Prince and Spring Street. This little Italian restaurant is one of the coziest venues I know, and their pizza is one of the best I ate in New York so far. But don’t get distracted by the pizza only, because most of their dishes are simply delicious. And caution – no matter what you order from their menu, it is going to come in a large quantity. Being lunch or dinner time, Rubirosa is always crowded, and their staff always friendly. The gorgeous wooden bar, the wooden floors, and dimmed lights make the place look rustic and warm, reminding of a nineteen century farm in Italy’s countryside. But what makes Rubirosa truly memorable is certainly the food.

Things are bloomin’ at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden

Nestled in the heart of Miami’s gorgeous and historic Old Cutler Road, in the middle of a neighborhood, is the crown jewel of Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. Established in 1938, this colorful and exotic attraction features an extraordinary collection of rare tropical plants including palms, cycads, and flowering trees and shrubs, vines and fruit trees, which are part of  the Garden’s mission to preserve the biodiversity of tropical environments.

Art collections are also part of the landscape at Fairchild with sculptures by world-renowned blown glass artist Dale Chihuly sharing space with the foliage and adding another dimension of beauty to the surroundings. Yearly events like the International Chocolate Festival and their most famous the Fairchild Ramble held every November for more than 65 years. Ramble is where plant lovers go to get the best deals and best finds for their garden.

Any time of year, a stop at Fairchild is a must, simply to take in this natural beauty and appreciate the conservation efforts of this wonderland.

2. A Green Mother’s Day at Santa Monica Fest May 8

Now in its nineteenth year, the Santa MonicaPicture 9 Festival highlights the connections between community, culture, business, environment and art. It takes place over Mother’s Day weekend and every year is a great place to bring Mom for a relaxing day filled with music, dance, visual arts, food, information and, of course, shopping!

The festival celebrates Mother Earth and focuses on preserving the environment. As a near zero-waste event, the vendors feature earth-friendly artistic wares, while local eateries bring fresh foods. There are also art workshops using recycled and re-purposed materials, as well as talks, discussions, and entertainment that focus on environmental sustainability. It’s a fun and educational experience for Mom and the family.

EcoManor

One of the most environmentally progressive homes in the country is nestled in the heart of Atlanta’s historic Buckhead neighborhood. EcoManor, set to be the first U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified residence in the Southeast, was built to inspire a change in urban design by showcasing how the latest green technologies can be incorporated into a traditionally beautiful Tudor house. Constructed by national eco-activists, Laura and Rutherford Seydel, EcoManor will serve as an educational tool for builders, architects, designers, landscapers and homeowners to promote green living, conservation and advanced residential building practices.
