Balena

The Bristol and Boka Restaurant Group have teamed up for this rustic Italian restaurant in the Landmark space in Lincoln Park, where a wood-burning grill and roasting spits work hard to turn out dishes such as cherry and duck bruschetta, whole grilled fish, pizza and panzanella.

Segway to Me Baby

Yeah it’s true that Segways will never really look all that normal. See one cruising past at high speed and it’s hard not to have a chuckle. The thing is, they’re just so darn convenient. When it comes to touring Chi-town that is. Walking tours are great but to cover major space and fast, Segways do the trick. Pride aside of course.

If you just can’t handle the Segway, bikes are just as popular and Chi-town was actually voted the #1 bike-friendly city in the US by Bicycling Magazine! So strap on your helmet and get ready to ride!

Chicago Bike ‘n Roll Tours allow tourists to see the best the city has to offer without the restrictions of roadways (i.e. double decker bus tours), or swollen feet (i.e. walking tours).

Bikes for rent are Trek and come in every option you could prefer. Tours adventure through Millennium Park, the lakefront, charming neighborhoods, famous Buckingham Fountain, Navy Pier, Lincoln Park, and much more. In fact there are 9 tours to choose from so everybody leaves happy.segway-1_jpg_595x1000_q85

Domo: A Country Japanese Jewel

Picture 8Domo hasn’t won Westword’s reader’s choice award for Best Japanese Restaurant fourteen years in a row for nothing. On the contrary, it’s a Denver treasure all the way around.

To open the heavy wooden door is to enter a rustic cottage in the feudal-era countryside, scattered with fascinating knickknacks like jars of viper wine and three-million-year-old chunks of rock salt; to exit out the other side is to discover a lush garden retreat, complete with a drum-bridged koi pond and a traditional shrine.

The menu is equally uncommon: chef-owner Gaku Homma’s so-called Japanese country fare comprises one-pot specialties such as donburi, nabemono, teriyaki, and the signature, chirashi-like Wanko sushi—all served with an array of sides and the fruity house sauce. Meanwhile, if there’s one thing Domo’s not known for, it’s efficient service—prepare to linger for a spell.

3. Early Blooming at Spring Flower Shows April 1-30

Picture 32April showers bring May flowers, but they bloom early with these conservatory flower shows. Enjoy gorgeous flowers long before they are blooming naturally outside. The shows take place at Garfield Park Conservatory and Lincoln Park Conservatory.

At Garfield Park, flowers include hydrangeas, spring flowering annuals, spring flowering perennials, and plenty of vibrant colors that will get you ready for the warm weather. There will even be azaleas that are descendents of azaleas on display at the 1893 Columbian Exposition. At Lincoln Park, the show has an impressive collection of palms, ferns, tropical plants and a show house under its Victorian-style glass house.

Start the New Year on the right foot and join in Chicago’s 24th annual 5K run/walk, benefiting the Lakeview Citizens Council.  Beginning at the south end of the beautiful Lincoln Park neighborhood, the run/walk course winds north on a lakefront bike path to Diversity Harbor, and concludes at the North Avenue Field House.  A cadre of approximately 1,500 runners and walkers will help financially aid the Lakeview Citizens Council, a non-profit neighborhood organization.  And then there’s the party! Held at Sedgwicks Bar & Grill (1935 N Sedgwick Street) participants can eat, drink and be very merry, with trophies and raffles galore.

Escape to the Italian Riviera at Fuga Salon & Spa

A mini-break to Italy is the goal of Fuga Salon & SPicture 6pa, which is the mastermind of Italiano Antonio Favaro when he arrived in the States just two years ago with one intention: provide the people of Chicago with a quick escape to Italy.

For starters take the complimentary espresso and panino coming straight from the spa’s very own Italian espresso bar. From there look ond pick your pleasure. The Fuga signature facial with Mediterranean essential oils is a favorite or maybe the “Juliet” is more your thing with more powerful resources like retinol and enzymes. For men, try the Cassanova facial to clear your mind (and your pores).

Here the world is really your Italian oyster. Massages (everything from sports to lymphatic), cellulite treatments, body wraps, waxing and top-notch hair design services will leave everyone with a little bit of  Sophia Loren in them. Mamma mia!
