Call it a trading post for fashionistas: Buffalo Exchange not only sells clothes but buys and trades them, too. The funky Capitol Hill branch of this national resale chain is lined with rack upon rack of vintage, designer, and “gently used” duds as well as display cases cluttered with jewelry, hats, bags, sunglasses and other goodies—many of them priced just as they might have been back in the day (think silk sheaths for $10 and cowboy boots for a fraction of the cost of a new pair). Bring your own bag to tote your purchases in, and the store will donate a nickel to the charity of your choice—so you can do good while looking even better.

Update Your Closet at Beacon’s Closet

For the most sought-after trends and vintage pieces look no further then Beacon’s Closet in where else but hipster-ville Williamsburg. This warehouse converted into a consignment shop can’t really be called a shop; it is three huge rooms full of men’s and women’s clothes, shoes, bags, accessories, and home goods that run the gambit from retro-chic to sleek and sexy to straight-up street wear. There are not many places that you can get La Rock striped booty shorts, Levis in every wash imaginable and Nike’s in every color imaginable, a white Calvin Klein rouched mini dress – for under twenty-five bucks! – silver Costume National pumps, light blue boat shoes, and an Andy Warhol look book; but, at Beacon’s Closet you can. All the goods are lightly used and formerly loved, with price tags that may shock you, in a good way. Whether you pick up the most becoming blue jeans or a head-turning party dress, you’ll spur curiosity and envy in all who pass you by.

Get your Couture for Cheap at Second Time Around

If you lust after Oscar de la Renta, but can only really afford Old Navy, then Second Time Around may be your favorite find of 2010. Second Time Around is a consignment shop near Rittenhouse Square that only sells designer merchandise (Dolce, Betsey, Versace, and the like) that is up to snuff with the shop’s high standards. The clothing must be no more than two years old, and in pristine condition, so with standards like that you are bound to find a steal at 30-70% off original prices.

This boutique gives- and receives. If you’re looking to ditch some duds for extra closet space and some weekend martini money, stop into the shop with three or more items and see if your garb is up Second’s alley.

Film star and native New Yorker Mizuo Peck loves to shop at one of New York’s coolest insider stores, INA.

INA describes itself as “New York’s best and most established designer consignment store,” and it’s very hard to prove them wrong.

Opening their flagship in 1994, they are now five stores strong in some of Manhattan’s most prized shopping real estate: NoHo, SoHo, Nolita, and Uptown.

INA is not your average consignment store where one most purge through racks of outdated and moth-ball smelling clothes to find the designer gem in the pile, it instead chooses the best of the best in fashion of yesterday and today. INA consistently fills its racks with beautiful, well-maintained, and luxurious items at discounted prices that make both fashionistas and recessionistas come back for more. They have everything from barely used Chanel wallets to Christian Louboutin heels to Tory Burch skirts. Some items are truly vintage while others are simply last season’s castaways, but all are absolutely devine.
