Buy something fancy for someone special at the Galleria

The Galleria in North Dallas is upscale shopping at its finest. The Galleria is home to numerous designer storefronts, boutique shops, upscale department stores (Nordstrom’s, Macy’s and Sak’s) and even an art gallery. Perusing the window displays while strolling under the Galleria’s vaulted glass ceiling makes for a relaxed and enjoyable shopping experience. They also have one of the nicest ice skating rinks in town (you know, for the kiddos). After working up an appetite with a day of shopping you can then sit down to upscale casual dining or even treat yourself to some fine dining at The Grill on the Alley or Oceanaire.

Giddyup at the Roundup Saloon

Once hailed “The Best Galdanged Gay Bar in the U.S. of A.,” the Roundup Saloon off Cedar Springs has been dubbed the home of good times and good people since 1980. Scoot your boots every night of the week at one of the only remaining country and western gay bars in the nation. They have karaoke Monday through Thursday, free dance lessons every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, Friday and Saturday drink specials and and excellent dance floor for two-steppin’. Country not your thang? Check them out on Sundays for Retro Man Candy nights and dance to some oldies but goodies from the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s.

To be or not to be at the Folger Shakespeare Library

The Folger Shakespeare Library is home to the world’s largest and finest collection of Shakespeare materials and to major collections of other rare Renaissance books, manuscripts, and works of art. It proudly serves as the primary repository for rare materials from the early modern period (1500-1750).

Not only is this a world-renowned research center and a leading conservation lab, the Folger Library is also known for its plays, concerts, literary readings, exhibitions, and family activities year-round!

The Folger Shakespeare for Kids program offers beginners’ activities, while local family workshops introduce the world of Shakespeare to kids and parents together. Believing that learning has no age limits, Shakespeare for Seniors strives to engage senior citizens with activities of the Elizabethan style.

Most notably, the biggest event is hosted on the Sunday closest to Shakespeare’s Birthday where the whole Folger is open to visitors with cakes, entertainments, crafts and tours!

The MoMA Store

The MoMa store in Soho is one of my favorite places to shop for creative items. They offer a large variety of cool, quirky objects, from toys, books, prints, to jewelry, accessories, and home deco products. It is certainly one of the best stores to shop during the gift season, as there is something for everybody. However, I highly recommend it to those who simply want to spoiled themselves and buy something ‘cool’ at an affordable price. As you can probably guess, every object is very modern, and unique, being that an electronic watch, a plastic chair, or a croc woven rug. If you are only visiting New York, I recommend the MoMA store, as highly as I recommend the Museum with the same name.

The Fabulous ABC Home

ABC Carpet is more than a store. This stunning place feels more like a museum, where you can take home your favorite pieces. The six floor flagship located in Manhattan at 888 Broadway and 19thStreet, is a combination of exhibits of European antiques, vintage goods, Asian rugs, glittering chandeliers, gigantic statues, modern pieces of furniture, and much more. Despite the variety of styles which they sell, everything is beautifully exhibited, and blends in perfectly. Most people go there to shop, but there are many people – including myself, who go there just for the visual experience. Yes, their items are luxurious, and they come at a high price, but ABC Carpet is truly the wonderland of home deco.

Holiday Fair at Grand Central Terminal

In many ways Grand Central is the heart of New York City, but for many locals (and commuters!) it’s also home to the best holiday market in town. The Grand Central Terminal Holiday Fair is one of the city’s few indoor (read warm) markets featuring over 70 vendors selling jewelry, home décor accessories, clothing and toys. Roche Bobois: French sophistication, ooo la la

The French are known for their design sense so a bit of European influence around the home is never a bad thing and it’s easy to find at the legendary Roche Bobois. These folks have been designing pieces inspired by the Bauhaus movement as well as French designers since 1950.

A group of European and American designers collaborate to create the four collections that feature contemporary, provincial, Les Voyages and their highest end the Collection Particuliere. Each features lines of sofas, armchairs, chairs, dining tables, coffee tables, children’s furniture, desks and much more. Enough to furnish every room in the house.

The quality and craftsmanship of the pieces can’t be beat, it’s part of the company’s stellar reputation. Their store is worth visiting simply to see outstanding furnishings and accessories unequaled by many.

Enjoy the Open Air Market of Atlantic Station

Live, Work, Play is the motto of Atlantic Station, midtown’s one stop shop for eating, shopping and entertainment. In lieu of making your usual trip to the department stores go to the one place where can you find a painting for the living room, shea butter lip balm and a one of kind necklace to top it off at the Open Air Market.

The Open Air Market features local vendors including artisans, independent artists and jewelry designers from the Atlanta area. The special holiday market features seasonal items such as outdoor gear, holidays specialties and gourmet candies. Not only does it have incredible and unique shopping finds, it also is convenient with its downtown location and plentiful Atlantic Station parking.

This is the perfect place to fine one of a kind pieces you can’t find at any chain store.

Visit George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate

George Washington’s plantation on the banks of the beautiful Potomac River offers visitors a chance to understand America’s first hero and the fascinating world in which he lived.
