Finley Dunnes Tavern entices people indoors with their many drink specials. But in this dark, laidback, no-frills bar, it offers more than that. Chef Patrick Du Pays wanted to make a “home away from home” with Z Cuisine & A Cote Bar a Absinthe- and he has succeeded. The restaurant has been awarded the Westword Best of Denver five years in a row. Using local and organic ingredients, the food is exquisitely done to perfection including classic French dishes that every palate can enjoy.

Going beyond the average bistrot restaurant, Z Cuisine has an added bonus of the A Cote Bar a Absinthe right next door. Taste real (minus the wormwood) absinthe that was illegal in the States not so long ago. If you’re not interested in some sugar and green liquid, there’s also an incredible selection of wines and cocktails to start, or end, your evening.

This extra-funky, staunchly indie Baker District boutique does sell plenty of frocks—many using recycled or organic materials—but it specializes in the small stuff, from suspenders and fedoras to combination handlebar/shoulder bags, laser-cut jewelry, and even handmade stationery; its adjacent craft-supply outlet also offers classes in needlefelting, embroidery, and more.

Cooler still, as part of the citywide First Friday Art Walk, it hosts Denver Made, an evening trunk show featuring local designers and libations to the tunes of live DJs.

All the City’s a Stage at the Curious Theatre Company

There are comPicture 7munity theaters, and then there are professional theaters that deeply engage their community. The Curious Theatre proudly falls in the latter category, often staging works by Denver-area scribes.

The company also offers annual playwriting workshops for young talent and hosts a unique fundraiser called Denver Stories—a gala performance of four plays, each inspired and co-written by some of the city’s most illustrious residents, from political figures like Governor Bill Ritter to sports heroes such as former Broncos star Reggie Rivers.

True to the notion that the personal is the political, it tends toward edgy, socially conscious productions that have won over many a local critic: Curious (as it’s known) has won the Denver Post’s Ovation Award for Best Year by a Company five years in a row!

Start The Weekend Right At Friday LIVE

Food and drink specials? Check. Gorgeous venue? Check. Fantastic free live music? Check! The Kimmel Center’s Friday LIVE series has all that and more Friday evenings on its Commonwealth Plaza sPHIfridaylivetage (that’s in the spectacular main lobby, which is worth the visit in itself).

The Philadelphia music scene is huge, and the Kimmel Center showcases these local talents from 5:30-7:15pm every Friday throughout its season. Rock, funk, classical, straight-away jazz – you name it- they’ve got it. Friday LIVE is a great way to see this beautiful venue, built in 2001 on the Avenue of the Arts, without committing to purchasing a ticket.

The bar serves drink specials and appetizers, ideal for a happy hour visit before going out to eat at one of the many restaurants in walking distance. Supporting local arts is always a good thing, so you may as well do it in this fabulous performing arts center. The Atlanta Contemporary Art Center is where to go to experience contemporary culture. You’ll find painting, sculpture, music and performances by local, national and international artists. Check their schedule—they’re famous for their artist talks and innovative presentations involving audience participation.

The Center is currently closed for renovation, but will be re-opening on October 19, 2013. Visit the website at thecontemporary.org for more information about events during the summer, and the grand re-opening!
