North End’s Strega is a Celebrity Haven

Picture 17

Nick Varano, owner of Strega, Nico and Nick Varano’s Famous Deli Restaurants, just might be Boston’s biggest celebrity restaurateur. Some of the celebrities spotted at the North End favorite Strega include none other than Tony Soprano himself (the late James Gandolfini), Robert DeNiro, Paris Hilton, Steven Tyler, The Rock and Justin Timberlake. Diners of all ages flock to this super hot Hanover Street restaurant not only for the lively scene, where Varano claims you will be treated like a celebrity even if you aren’t, but also for the authentic Italian cuisine. There are Italian gangster movies, i.e. The Godfather, running continuously on the numerous TVs set in the wall. House specialties include veal chops stuffed with prosciutto and fontina cheese and grilled filet mignon with a Remy-Martin sauce. The Buccatini All’ Amatricana (pasta sautéed with pancetta, San Marzano tomato sauce with onions covered with a blend of pecorino and parmigiano cheeses) just might be the best dish on the menu. End the night with a sweet limoncello or a strong cup of cappuccino.

Benvenuto! Discover a modern, rustic Italy in Chicago at Siena Tavern!

Siena Tavern

The Siena Tavern concept was an idea born during a trip to Italy, where there was a little tavern with a good open kitchen and a kind of rustic look that the owners liked. They got that idea in Italy and brought it to Chicago, modernized it a bit, and created a modern-meet-rustic restaurant with a menu of homemade pastas and Neapolitan pizzas baked in a Woodstone oven.

The food is very local with its peak of flavor and freshness.

The restaurant has become a hit in the River North neighborhood. As Chef Fabio Viviani says, “When you see the same people ten times, with all the great selection and great choices around here, in this town, that’s a home run to me.”

Dallas’ historic Fair Park has been drawing crowds for decades

As the site of the 1936 Texas Centennial Exposition, Fair Park remains the only original, unaltered, pre-1950’s world’s fair site in the country. The architecture at Fair Park is distinctively Art Deco and home to over seven million visitors a year. The park hosts a slew of festivals and events year-round, including the ever popular Texas State Fair. The Music Hall, The Science Place, the Texas Star Ferris Wheel and the Cotton Bowl all call Fair Park home, in addition to several other museums, exhibit halls, performance venues and gardens. They also offer two historic walking tours of the grounds for those interested in the architecture and history of the park. Visit fairpark.org for more information.

A play on brunch at Tongue & Cheek

The restaurant’s name is certainly a play on words but the owners of Tongue & Cheek aren’t messing around when it comes to brunch. They’re taking it as seriously as any other meal of the day.

Chef Jamie DeRosa got the reigns in the kitchen where he’s concocted an all-inclusive menu for foodies with a sweet or savory tooth and those who want traditional as well as something with a bit of a twist.

T&CThe King Crab benedict with Tabasco hollandaise and baby arugula’s got some kick or the Cuban sandwich with pork cheeks and pickled cucumbers will wake up anyone hungover from a night of clubbing on South Beach. Or perhaps indulge in lemon ricotta pancakes with blueberry jam, sticky buns with brown butter pecans or a basket of housemade donut holes in three varieties.

Wash it all down with what else…a bloody mary but not just the usual, here there’s a Barbecued Bloody Mary with Woodford Reserve and Belvedere Vodka and the True Blood, the traditional with Belvedere Vodka, horseradish and pickled vegetables. And if necessary, finish up with coffee which is free throughout brunch.

Brunch is on Sundays at Tongue & Cheek at 431 Washington Ave., Miami Beach is from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Click here to visit their website or call them at 305-704-2900.

Check Out The New Bar The Elroy!

Elroy

The Elroy is a new, “futuristic” bar that opened up on Memorial Day weekend, at 1423 H St NE in the Atlas Theater District. The name refers to the Jetson’s character. Karl Graham, who was a partner in New York Avenue Beach Bar, is behind the neighborhood bar.

Graham describes the spot as “a nice little neighborhood bar where you come in and people know your name.” The two-story space is located a quarter mile from where Graham grew up.

Some of the more “futuristic” flourishes to go with the name: outlets and USB ports along the bar, TVs in the bathroom mirrors, frosted glass restroom mirrors that switch on and off, and funky glassware. The Elroy will specialize in cocktails in “fancy glasses, really crazy cocktail glasses,” Graham says. There will also be a limited bar menu with five to 10 items—”nothing extravagant.”

Harlow

Harlow

New York City is home to some of the hottest restaurants, hotels and nightlife in the world and no one knows that better than Richie Notar. The Queens native started his career in the hospitality industry as a busboy at Ian Schrager and Steve Rubell‘s Studio 54. Notar recently partnered with Jim Pallotta, Jon Krasner and Michael Barrett to create Harlow, a full-service restaurant, parlor and café in midtown Manhattan. Located at 56th and Park, the European-inspired restaurant features a grand oyster bar, an interior wall of ivy in a conservatory that is flooded with natural light and contemporary art installations. The main dining room retains the original stained glass windows and chandeliers from the 1930’s, when actress Marion Davies used the space for personal entertaining.
