Cafeina: Wynwood’s lounge of choice for locals
Stroll down 23rd Street in the heart of Wynwood’s Arts District and an orange sign with the word Cafeina will undoubtedly stand out since it’s hanging in front of a non-descript building in the mostly warehouse-filled district.
Step in though and it’s anything but. Part lounge/restaurant/gallery, Cafeina is many things to many people. Sure it’s all three but as a lounge it is the type of place that the locals love and is a great discovery for those not in the know.
The action here happens both indoors, among dimly lit chandeliers and candlelight on comfy chairs, and outdoors where the dance floor shares space with lovely patio furniture and even hammock beds. The DJ here knows how to mix the perfect blend of club/dance music that sets the mood and matches the vibe.
Cafeina is located at 297 NW 23 St., Miami, FL 305-438-0792 www.cafeinamiami.com
A play on brunch at Tongue & Cheek
The restaurant’s name is certainly a play on words but the owners of Tongue & Cheek aren’t messing around when it comes to brunch. They’re taking it as seriously as any other meal of the day.
Chef Jamie DeRosa got the reigns in the kitchen where he’s concocted an all-inclusive menu for foodies with a sweet or savory tooth and those who want traditional as well as something with a bit of a twist.
The King Crab benedict with Tabasco hollandaise and baby arugula’s got some kick or the Cuban sandwich with pork cheeks and pickled cucumbers will wake up anyone hungover from a night of clubbing on South Beach. Or perhaps indulge in lemon ricotta pancakes with blueberry jam, sticky buns with brown butter pecans or a basket of housemade donut holes in three varieties.
Wash it all down with what else…a bloody mary but not just the usual, here there’s a Barbecued Bloody Mary with Woodford Reserve and Belvedere Vodka and the True Blood, the traditional with Belvedere Vodka, horseradish and pickled vegetables. And if necessary, finish up with coffee which is free throughout brunch.
Brunch is on Sundays at Tongue & Cheek at 431 Washington Ave., Miami Beach is from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Click here to visit their website or call them at 305-704-2900.

The Publican
Featuring pork and fish/seafood preparations, the menu is best described by Kahan and Huston as “pristine product, simply prepared,” an approach to food Kahan has long espoused in all of his kitchens. The Publican boasts the simplest cuisine of all three properties, each dish stripped of adornment and containing only essential ingredients. The menu is presented in sections: Fish, Meat and Vegetables, each laid out from lightest to heaviest fare.
Pristinely fresh oysters, hand-selected for the restaurant from purveyors with whom the culinary team has formed partnerships over the past year, anchor the fish portion of the menu. From classic Belgian-style mussels to seafood stew to wood-roasted whole fish, the seafood is simple and straightforward yet eclectic in presentation.
Meat dishes center upon pork, all certified organic and sourced from Dyersville, Iowa. Anchored by a wide selection of housemade terrines and charcuteries, the menu changes daily to reflect the seasonal availability of products. Other hearty dishes, again, presented simply and stripped of adornment, include such seasonal items as black and white sausage, steak tartare, pork shoulder and pot-au-feu. Kahan and Huston plan to make the wood-roasted chicken a signature, “… with the best frites in town,” boasts Kahan.
A selection of vegetables rounds out the menu, including such seasonal items as daily aïoli, roasted broccoli, pine nuts and Italian buratta and cauliflower sformato with Marcona almond romesco.
Strong architectural lines dominate the space, which is large, airy and awash in earthy colors. Guests enter The Publican through a glass-enclosed vestibule, its 10-foot-high ceiling offering a glimpse of the restaurant’s 13.6-foot ceiling. Inside, the spacious interior is dominated by a large walnut communal table designed to recall 16th Century European banquets. Set up in racetrack fashion, the banquet table seats upwards of 100 people, side by side.
At the center of the banquet table stands eight English pub-style three-tiered cocktail tables where guests can stand, leaning comfortably on one level, with their beer and food resting on the other tiers. This interior space is large enough for guests who are waiting for tables or visiting the restaurant just for a beer and a bite. Against the east wall stand a series of four-top walnut banquette tables set up on platforms and privatized by table-height swinging doors.
The walls and ceiling are wrapped in a material reminiscent of antique pressed tin. Across the front of the space, 10-foot cafe-style doors open out onto the street. At the back of the restaurant, a partially open kitchen offers a view to the culinary action.
Guy’s American Kitchen and Bar
Located right in the heart of Times Square, Guy Fiere introduces big flavors and good times. They’re-the-hook scratch-made food, hand crafted signature beers, killer cocktails and rockin’ tunes are all on tap here.
Ocean Prime
Ocean Prime is the culmination of a creative exercise we started in 2006 to define the best in culinary, beverage, service and atmosphere. Their team wanted to pair a great steakhouse with a great seafood restaurant. We imagined a place where our guests are greeted by name and partner with us in adventures of great food, wine and libation.
Ocean Prime was not developed overnight. Their executive chef teams traveled, tasted and compared notes to refine a menu that would ignite curiosity and surpass expectations. Their operations teams sourced the finest and the freshest ingredients to elevate every plate that leaves our kitchen. They curated a Wine Spectator-honored wine list for perfect pairings. And they poured energy with a fresh twist into the creation of our signature cocktails, expertly prepared by our well-trained bar chefs.
The Standard Pour
Inspired by 1920’s nouveau nostalgia & outfitted with the proper balance of comfort at your favorite greasy spoon & the timeless class of a silver one; The Cocktail Den & Cravings Kitchen combine to form an experience as refreshingly familiar as the concoctions it features.
Arriving on McKinney Avenue circa 2012 courtesy of the noteworthy La Reve Consultants, TSP bucks the trend of loud lounges and boisterous bars making it the ideal setting for conversation. Whether dining alongside old friends at our inviting brick backed bar or enjoying drinks on the noticeable patio with new ones, frequenters of TSP can be certain they have found the premier place to be seen & heard in Dallas, Texas.
SoBe’s newest hotspot Mokai already attracting celebs
Since today’s reality celebrities are always lumped in with A-listers, let’s consider Kendra Wilkinson (of reality television’s “Kendra on Top” on WE TV) stopping in at SoBe’s newest nightclub Mokai for a night of partying with girlfriends, a true celeb sighting.
The scene at Mokai is typical South Beach. Scantily clad dancers, sometimes alone but many times in pairs (or trios), set the scene for a night of revelry and debauchery like only SoBe can deliver. DJ’s pump the house music nightly, since the nightclub scene really never dies, while bottles of bubbly pop all night in the VIP section.
Weeknight parties here have kitchy names like Ransom Mondays, Relapse Wednesdays and Weekend Warrior Fridays. On Saturdays Gino G., Mike Russ, S1 spin while Weisson plays drums.
Mokai is located at 235 23 St., Miami Beach, FL, 305-673-1409, www.mokaimiami.com
The Hamilton
Strange and amazing, unlikely and enviable, the life of Alexander Hamilton could be a blueprint for the evolution of Washington, DC. This is a man who started off an orphan and ended up a lawyer, banker and founding father before dying famously in a duel with the Vice President of the United States. First built to house the federal government, DC is now a city where polish and sophistication have been charmed by a bohemian spirit yielding a new, thriving, artistic underground. Located just two blocks from the White House, the District’s newest destination for envelope-pushing, visionary music and talent defies convention, much like Hamilton himself. Visit thehamiltondc.com for more information.
A clubbing evening…at home (or House Nightclub)
Those club promoters, what will they think of next. Well, it seems like next has already arrived and it’s called House Nightclub in the Wynwood neighborhood. The concept is just what it seems, a nightclub that looks and feels like…a house. A very modern, futuristic house.
Naturally, it’s housed in a former warehouse and although there are kitchens, showers and bedrooms within this club theme, for sure no clubgoers will be wearing robes and house slippers. They will however, grab their cocktails in the kitchens which will serve as bars, lounge on beds while sipping (or perhaps slammin’) their chosen concoctions and hang out in showers that double as VIP rooms. Promoters are calling it the “Ultimate House Party,” a cyber modulated world with holographic technology, 360 degree panoramic projections and 3D architectural mapping.

CVI. CHE 105: Peruvian classic with a hip twist
The small, mom and pop eatery in Downtown Miami is slowly disappearing, replaced by modern, hip restaurants and leading the trend is Cvi.che 105.
Chef/owner Juan Chipoco and sous chef and co-owner Luis Hoyos have created an incredible ambiance and menu that is indicative of their passion for traditional, delicious Peruvian cooking. The space is deceivingly large and inviting, with a bright interior, open kitchen and ultra-contemporary furnishings and accents.
Chipoco blends sexy dishes like seafood orgy ceviche, a blend of marinated raw seafood including fish, calamari and shrimp served in typical Peruvian tiger milk with more traditional ones like Mama Ele Corvina Fish – his grandmother’s recipe of pan roasted fresh corvine fish served with a crab cake in a rocoto sauce and a homemade potato cake
They also take great care in developing specific flavors for each ceviche depending which region of Peru it represents.
Cviche 105 is located at 105 NE 3 Ave., Miami, FL 305-577-3454, www.ceviche105.com
Sardinia Enoteca Ristorante: That’s Italian!
The name is kind of long but oh so Italian — Sardinia Enoteca Ristorante on Miami Beach in the quaint area around Purdy Avenue. It’s becoming a hotbed of restaurants over here and no wonder, away a bit from the crowded South Beach scene which makes it a locals scene.
This gorgeous restaurant with pretty wooden tables and chairs, oversized tiles for flooring and an inviting bar that makes a great spot to eat too puts the wine front and center. The Italian wines are proudly displayed and elegantly lit in a bookcase looking case.
And if choosing between antipasti, soup, salad, entree, panini, pasta or any other of their wide selection perhaps the Tasting Menu is the best bet. For $65 there are plenty of seafood or landlubber selections along with a cheeseboard and dessert selection. It’s true Italian fare and because wine is so important here, they’re happy to offer diners a taste before purchasing. Very classy.
Sardinia Enoteca Ristorante is located at 1801 Purdy Ave., Miami Beach, FL 305-531-2228, www.saridinia-ristorante.com
Fifty Ultra Lounge: Viceroy Hotel’s hot spot
One of Downtown Miami’s hottest hotels is surprisingly enough, a fabulous nightclub spot. The Fifty Ultra Lounge at Viceroy Miami is stiff competition for those clubs on the other side of the Causeway (meaning South Beach).
Appropriately named for its location, the view alone is unmatched by any other club because it sits on the building’s rooftop meaning unobstructed water and skyline views as far as the eye can see. The pool, which serves as the centerpiece here, is no slouch either, adding that perfect Miami touch.
FIFTY promises to bring you a “One-of-a-kind rooftop lounge with a fresh new look on Miami’s Nightlife scene.” There’s always something happening on this rooftop with Happy Hour, guest DJ’s, special Ladies’ Night events and Sunday afternoon pool parties. Celebrities are frequently spotted here so keep your eyes peeled.
Viceroy Miami is located at 485 Brickell Avenue, 305-503-4417 www.viceroymiami.com
Dream: This is no la la land but it’s a dream
Yet another velvet rope nightclub has debuted in South Beach. This one’s called Dream and features all that’s come to be expected from a high energy, open ’til the wee hours hot spot in what’s known as the American Riviera.
Like most of the nightclubs in the area, this one’s on Washington Avenue, the hotbed strip for late night party hounds. Dream’s decadent interior is filled with obligatory disco balls, multi-colored flourescent lighting, comfy tufted leather booths where celebrities and other high-rollers are sure to enjoy bottle service throughout the night.
The nightly themes, like Fantasy Wednesdays, Eyecandy Saturdays and Fubar Fridays seem to have a recurring theme. It’s pure South Beach decadence for sure. It’s what’s to be expected around these parts.
Dream is located at 1532 Washington Ave., 305-674-8018, www.dreammia.com
City Hall: No government here, it’s all about the food
The name could throw anyone off — City Hall. Government, clerks, parking tickets, etc… but at this City Hall, it’s all about the food. Owner Steve Haas, an icon in the Miami community, especially restaurants and his chef Tom Azar wouldn’t have it any other way.
They’ve created a masterpiece of Art Deco cool here and Haas has experience with that after all, he’s run restaurants on South Beach where that architecture style rules. Azar, a protege of famed celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse, has put together a stellar menu of brasserie style favorites. Using a play on words throughout the menu (appetizers are called “Opening Statements” and entrees “Primary Decisions”) the food is serious here.
Seafood and andouille gumbo with steamed rice and butter fried croutons or Latin-inspired seared scallops with jalapeno emulsion, pico de gallo, a black bean and sweet corn salsa and fried plantains make great choices.
City Hall is located at 2004 Biscayne Blvd. 305-764-3130, www.cityhallrestaurant.com
Grand Central’s Downtown Miami’s newest nightspot
Grand Central is hitting the Downtown Miami scene with a bang, becoming the newest venue in the area to provide live music and a rollicking good time. Providing a place where music lovers can enjoy original bands and performers is first and foremost to the folks running Grand Central.
The line-up is non-stop and features DJ’s playing a blend of hip hop, Latin, and dance tunes. Amber Rose, model and ex girlfriend of hip hop artist Kanye West hosts a party here for her new beau Wiz Khalifa and bands like The Battles and Caramelos de Cianuro join other newcomers on the scene.
It’s a great deal too with minimal cover charges drink specials almost every night.
Grand Central is located at 697 N. Miami Ave., Miami, FL 305-377-2277 www.grandcentralmiami.com
Jaguar’s ceviche, and so much more…
Jaguar Ceviche Spoon Bar and Latam Grill is like a tour through Latin America and the cuisines that make each area unique. It’s what Chef Oscar del Rivero envisioned bringing to diners and he’s delivering.
Front and center is the ceviche spoon bar, a fantastic representation of unique bites representing Peru, where the dish is most popular, and some great variations. The Asian inspired ones have soy and ginger while many others include cilantro. All of course include the freshest fish and lime which is what makes the dish what it is.
The Latam (short for Latin American) grill features a grilled organic chicken chicken breast stuffed with goat cheese and pico de gallo verde, simple grilled fish entrees and steaks like filet mignon and skirt steak or “churrasco.”
The atmosphere complements the menu perfectly with warm-colored walls, unique bamboo styled lighting and dark wood chairs at the bar.
Jaguar is located at 3067 Grand Ave., Coconut Grove 305-444-0216 www.jaguarspot.com
Dolores but you can call me Lolita: Good eats, hip scene
It’s about more than just the food at Dolores but you can call me Lolita in the heart of Miami’s thriving Brickell area. This is a compound that encompasses the restaurant, lounge, private room and even the Japanese favorite Sushi Maki next door. They go for the warm glow of candlelight in the restaurant where the wall border close to the ceiling brims with quirky and inspiring sayings.
Then there’s the menu which is brimming with delicious selections like the appetizer called Maybe, the Best Serrano Ham Croquettes you ever tasted or the Caesar salad was created in Tijuana Parmesan cheese and croutons. Those wacky names doesn’t mean they don’t take food seriously here, entrees include pappardelle with a Kobe beef bolognese or baja fish tacos of tempura fish filets served with a chipotle-guava cabbage slaw.
Eat or party or do both at the restaurant or lounge, the atmosphere’s great at both.
Scarpetta: Italian eats at the Fontainebleau
Chef Scott Conant’s empire of restaurants is ever-present in the legendary art deco Fontainebleau Hilton Hotel and his restaurant Scarpetta. His eats aren’t cheap but the taste is amazing and the ambiance unbeatable.
Housed in the star of Miami Beach’s Art Deco hotels, it’s done up elegantly in a creamy white motif and boasts incredible views, a cool bar also done in white with silver circles to add interest. But definitely the star here is the food.
Chef Conant’s belief in simple, delicious Italian food comes through in his menu. His pastas, like the location, are legendary. Classic preparation with minimal ingredients make them delectable, like the black tagliatelle topped with lobster which is a thing of beauty. Pastas are plated elegantly in a lovely tight circle. They’ve also got a fresh made stromboli that puts anything found at a local pizza joint to shame. These are just some of the stars on the menu.
Scarpetta is located in the Fontainebleau Hilton, 4401 Collins Ave., Miami Beach
Electric Pickle: Wynwood’s underground party
Event though it’s upstairs in it’s home building, the Electric Pickle/Bolero Room is the underground party everyone wants to be at in the Wynwood area.
Wednesday to Saturday nights, the party’s on here. DJ’s A-Train, Mr. Brown and Sire Esq. are joined by special guests on Wednesday nights as they play a mix of hip-hop, funk, soul, classics and reggae. Stop Drop ‘N Roll Thursdays DJ Gran Torino and guests play rockabilly, swing, twang, blues and dance jazz. There’s no cover this night and drink are half price.
For Disco Machine Fridays it’s deep house soul, heavy funk boogie and classic dance floor faves and also featuring live acts and DJ’s and on Saturdays live acts, international DJ’s and half-priced drinks are part of Get Some Saturdays.
Electric Pickle is located at 2826 N. Miami Ave., Miami, FL
Pubbelly: Simply stated, it’s hog heaven
The gastropub has come to Miami, Miami Beach that is, in Pubbelly located around the quieter end of South Beach around 20th Street. Smart move, the space has the perfect non-Art Deco-looking Chelsea New York reminiscent look and feel. It fits perfectly with what the trio of young hip owners are going for.
High ceilings, brick walls, rustic but city like, it’s the antithesis of bubblegum, neon, pastel South Beach and the unique menu is the perfect complement. Asian-inspired Gastropub’s the concept here, an unusual blend for sure but one that works.
Try the spaghetti and meatballs with lemongrass, sommen noodles, tomato and peanuts best described as tangy with a surprising addicting flavor. The McBelly with porkbelly, kimchee, barbecue, pickles and shaved onions is a must as is the pubbelly ramen with porkbelly, lemongrass broth and a poached egg. Menu’s divided into small plates (the first two mentioned here) and larger ones like the ramen, as well as veggies, raw/marinated/cured options and sides. Brews, sakes and wines are great here too with a huge selection.
Pubbelly is located at 1418 20 St., Miami Beach, FL
Monty’s in the Grove: Waterfront nightlife party
The make-up of Coconut Grove has changed over the years going from hippie, granola, birkenstock in the 60s and 70s to an area to cruise in your car and party the night away from the 80s into the present although the scene has quieted down a bit. One place though that’s stood the test of time and is still a great place to party is Monty’s in the Grove.
This waterfront party spot is always a great place to stop in for cocktails, maybe a nibble and definitely some dancing. The deejays here are always playing the latest hits and live bands play here regularly too. The bayview from the giant open-air tiki hut here is unbeatable, it’s Miami all the way. And the boats and yachts that call the dockside home are just as enticing.
Monty’s in the Grove is located at 2550 S. Bayshore Drive, Coconut Grove
Sunset Lounge at the Mondrian: Easy, breezy and chic
No matter how crowded South Beach gets, there’s always a cool poolside lounge to hang at that makes being in Miami well…tres cool. The Sunset Lounge at the Mondrian South Beach is one of those places. It’s elegant with the classy touches that people visiting Miami Beach have come to expect.
As always too, it’s a multiple-space experience here so everyone can find a great spot of their own. For an outdoor experience there’s plush red velvet seating with matching red and white designed carpet and a killer view of Biscayne Bay with Downtown Miami’s skyline as a back drop. Inside is the Lobby Bar and Lounge, a feast for the eyes in a different sense with a black winding spiral staircase and silent bell light fixtures designed by Marcel Wanders. The specialty cocktails, made with exotic and local ingredients as well as the live Latin and Spanish guitar players complete the experience.
The Mondrian South Beach is located at 1100 West Avenue, Miami Beach, FL
Green Russell: Frank Bonanno’s Genuine Gin Joint
Tucked away in a subterranean space below Larimer Square, Frank Bonanno’s new cocktail lounge is literally underground. But unlike the Prohibition-era speakeasies it’s modeled after, Green Russell is otherwise aboveboard. Indeed, given the buzz it generated prior to its opening, you’d be hard-pressed to find a drinker in Denver who doesn’t know about this dark, cozy den, where local masters of mixology tailor their libations to your tastes Thursday through Sunday nights. The friendly crew also gladly serves up a limited but cheeky selection of eats that includes slices from Wednesday’s Pie, the tiny shop that Bonanno has installed as a faux-front for the bar.
Wall Lounge: W South Beach’s IT place
It doesn’t get any swankier than a W Hotel and with the crowds this place is attracting, especially on South Beach, a nightclub is pretty much a given so the Wall Lounge is where it’s at in this place.
Decked out to look like something out of the 1960s, with funky psychedelic lights, retro leather couches around intimate round tables, perfect for groups wanting bottle service and circular blacklight inspired images projected throughout complete the space.
DJ Irie plays the tunes here along with his other contemporaries like the legendary Paul Oakenfold who is known to make appearances here as well.
The Wall Lounge is located inside the W South Beach at 2201 Collins Ave., Miami Beach, FL
Rokbar: Rockin’ attitude the Tommy Lee way
A departure from the usual high energy dance clubs of South Beach, rocker Tommy Lee’s, drummer for Motley Crue, Rokbar is the ultimate hangout place for the hard rock crowd.
Something’s going on here every night. Insomniac Thursdays; Dirty, Sexy Rock & Roll Fridays, Fresh 2 Death and DJ Tommy Ryk Saturdays and house music every Tuesday. Celebrities like actor Ryan Gosling and bands touring through Miami are regulars at Rokbar where Crue pics adorn the walls behind the bar which features rocked lighting of black leather suspended by metal chains.
Rokbar is located at 1905 Collins Ave., Miami Beach, FL
Finnegan’s on the River: Downtown Miami hot spot
Downtown Miami’s got a river running through it and bars are now lining the area making it a place to see and be seen with a killer view to boot. Finnegan’s on the River packs them in on any given night after all, it’s great for a mid-week happy hour, Friday night end-of-the-week outing and Saturday night hot spot.
In typical Miami fashion, Sunday is a huge day at Finnegan’s when boaters are invited to park and join in on the pool party. The drink specials alone (c’mon, $3 and $5 cocktails are unheard of around here) are incentive enough to party at Finnegan’s.
Happy Hour is Monday to Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. and on Saturdays it’s the perfect spot to watch a late afternoon college game and stay to party the night away.
Finnegan’s on the River is located at 401 SW 3 Avenue, Miami, FL
SkyBar: It’s a multi-sensory experience at South Beach’s Shore Club
One thing is for sure, visit a trendy hotel on South Beach and it’s very likely that they’ll use every inch of their space to provide multiple experiences for clubgoers and guests. The Shore Club is no exception where they utilize their interior and exterior space to the max, providing a nightclub experience among the palm trees as well as under the hot club lights.
The Redroom Garden surrounding the pool area is set up as an outdoor living room with Asian-style furniture and landscaped gardens filled with colorful perennials, bouganvilleas and passion flowers. It’s a true tropical oasis.
In keeping with the red theme, the interior Redroom is awash in the fiery color from the red lacquered teak floor, red walls that glow with intimate lighting and luxurious red bar stools. The comfy couches are filled with red-patterned cushions. No wonder local and national celebrities love to stop in and party here. Of course, a party on South Beach wouldn’t be complete without a DJ, they play here pretty much every night, Sunday afternoons there’s always a pool party.
SkyBar at the Shore Club is located at 1901 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach, FL
Sugarcane Raw Bar & Grill: Small bites, big flavor
The concept at Sugarcane Raw Bar & Grill is to entice diners with a combination of flavors in a wide variety of small plates, known around Europe (particularly Spain) as “tapas.” They have robata, hot and raw bar kitchens.
Their eclectic menu is contstantly changing so it’s a unique and different experience everytime. Some of their most ambitious items include bacon wrapped dates with linguica and manchego, thin-crust flatbread with cured tuna, tobiko and sour cream and Kobe beef sliders with tonkatsu and quail egg. Their hand picked market greens with with crumbled goat cheese and cherry bing vinaigrette is a great starter, free range bulled barbecue chicken on brioche bread served with zucchini pickles and pommes frites (very fancy and tasty fries) is a great entree sandwich and the homemade el ray chocolate chip ice cream sandwich is a tasty dessert.
Inside, the place is colorful, industrial and edgy with a West Indies flair through their paddle fans, watercolor stained walls, a tall green hedge surrounding the outdoor patio and a killer bar with colorfully displayed wine bottles and alcohol.
Sugarcane Raw Bar & Grill is located at 3250 NE 1 Avenue, Miami, FL
Where There’s Smoke, There’s Fun: The Robusto Room
Named for a type of stogie, The Robusto Room serves as a rare sanctuary for smokers—and a swanky one at that. One part cigar bar, one part martini lounge, The Robusto Room boasts a robust amount of Citysearch Awards, cleaning up everything from Best Club to Most Romantic Bar and Singles Scene.
Hidden in a courtyard off a suburban street, this dark, wood-and-leather-filled Lone Tree martini lounge and cigar bar doesn’t only sell hundreds of tobacco labels but also rents private humidors for regulars to maintain their stashes. And though there’s not much food on the menu—with only a couple of appetizers, you should plan to dine elsewhere—there’s lots of entertainment in store: besides plasma TVs and free Wifi, karaoke, poker, trivia, and DJs all turn The Robusto Room into a refined rec room on any given night.
No pretense at The Bar
Established in 1946 and a staple of the Coral Gables community, hangin’ out at The Bar (once known as the Hofbrau Haus) is almost a rite of passage for folks who like to party in “The City Beautiful.” But don’t be fooled by the fancy surroundings because this place is no pretense and all good times. The brews are cold, the grub is great and there’s a jukebox that won’t quit, it’s legendary.
There’s something going on nightly here and they know how to start the week off right with 2 for 1 specials on Mondays. Karaoke’s on Tuesday, DJ’s Boe and Icue take over Wednesday through Friday and Saturday there’s live music.
And if all that’s not enough, they keep patrons happy by offering a “Hangover Brunch” on Saturdays and Sundays, after all they want to keep everyone coming back for more so what better way than to feed ’em.
Waxy O’Connors: Limericks and ales are genuine here
The dark and heavy wood bar that commands Waxy O’Connor’s and is its centerpiece was placed at the heart of the bar and eatery to remind patrons they’re in an Irish pub and the 7,000-square-foot unit is authentic, it was built entirely in Ireland and shipped over to the United States.
The 20 brews and ales on tap and plenty more by the bottle are another dead giveaway that this is a place for drinking, eating, hanging with friends and especially catching just about any sporting event. They’ve got seventeen 50″ flat screen televisions so everyone can be watching their favorite sport or team at any given time.
Offering live music is another plus here. When the deejay’s not mixing up tunes, there’s someone playing it live at Waxy’s. The amazing view of Miami’s Downtown skyline and historic Miami River make for great waterfront drinking and gazing.
Waxy O’Connor’s is located at 690 SW 1st Court, Miami, FL
Katsuya Hollywood: A Sushi Kraze
The Katsuya kraze has officially taken over Hollywood.
Celebrities such as Kim Kardashian and Miley Cyrus are frequent visitors along with anyone else who appreciates good quality sushi. With sushi favorites such as spicy albacore over crispy onion as well as spicy tuna over crispy rice, the Hollywood location is the perfect place to order off the menu or indulge in a chef’s tasting. Along with perfectly concocted dishes, Katsuya has a large list of specialty cocktails with restaurant favorites such as the Watermelon Cucumber Mojito or the Lychee Lovely with vanilla infused vodka and fresh squeezed grapefruit.
Though the beautifully decorated red and white restaurant is the perfect place for dinner or a special occasion, Katsuya has recently come up with new ways for foodies to enjoy on a budget. The Lucky Seven features seven tastings, such as tuna tacos and Kobe beef sliders, for seven dollars. Other deals include Sake Specials on Monday or Garlic Shrimp paired with a pitcher of beer for twenty bucks on select days and locations.
Reservations are recommended and valet parking is sometimes your only parking option on busy nights.
Luna Park: Recreational Dining
Luna Park is what you think of when you think of Los Angeles restaurants: relaxed, good food, and fun.
Whether its groups of friends huddling around a table or a business lunch, the overall attitude at Luna Park is both inviting and exciting. Though the menus are packed with typical California finds, most people come to Luna Park to drink or order dessert.
The dessert menu features fun, D-I-Y options such as making your own caramel apples or s’mores as well as deep fried apples and coconut cream pie.
The popularity of Luna Park also falls in their drink menu and cocktail selection. The Kick A** Mai Tai is definitely the most popular as well as the Luna Park Mini Bar featuring three flights of the restaurant’s signature drinks.
Since the drinks at Luna Park keep the tables and outdoor patio filled, Luna Park created happy hour weekdays from 4-7pm as well as bottomless mimosas and sangria on Saturdays and Sundays.
Beware though: Miracle Mile locals and those living adjacent to Melrose might ask you to find another park to eat at.
10 Pin Puts a New Spin on Bowling
When you think of bowling, often times the images that conjure are disgusting shoes, stale air and beer bellied men. Well say good bye, to that image when stepping in to 10 Pin who offers “bowling with a twist.” It’s a twist in deed; cocktails shaken, stirred or straight up – whatever your fancy. A wide array of colorful and tasty cocktails are met by a menu featuring typical faves- also with a twist. Instead of greasy bar food expect chips with fresh guacamole, hummus plates, upgraded cheeseburgers, pulled pork sandwiches, pizzas and of course, Chicago hot dogs.
As for the lanes you’ll be bowling on, they’re so colorful and cool they look more like a nightclub’s installation than bowling lanes! Serious players or those looking for serious fun, line the lanes for plenty of laughs, mingling and flirting. And with the nightclub-worthy stereo system you just may want to ditch your bowling shoes and break out your dancing shoes.
Insider’s Tip: 10 Pin is available for private parties and runs plenty of its own events (faves coincide with Chicago sporting events), so check their calendar for specials.
Red Bar: At center of Downtown’s red hot nightlife
Miami’s Brickell Avenue area was once known as a residential area with not much nightlife but things have certainly changed. The thriving nightspots have been popping up everywhere over the last few years and Red Bar is one that attracts plenty of attention for its eye-grabbing wall art, local beautiful people and great mingling and dancing.
Located in the heart of the district, this place has everything a great night out on the town requires. Dance the night away to the sounds of either a live band or a smokin’ hot deejay, different ones are featured each month. They’ve also got Ladies Night where ladies get to drink for free every Wednesday from 8-12. And to add a little culture to the mix, there’s also a gallery with new artworks featured monthly, along with a meet the artist opening reception with drinks and hors d’oeuvres.
Red Bar is located at 52 SW 10 Street, Miami, FL
Calamari Restaurant: Where Italian Mediterranean’s alive
Arrive at Calamari Restaurant in Coconut Grove and prepare to be tantalized by Italian dishes bursting with rich yet delicate flavors by Chef Alex Lopez, a technique he has spent years perfecting and continues evolving. With his training mostly in Italian kitchens around Miami, with some Asian and Cuban, his menu is a fusion of this trio.
The spacious restaurant is located on the quieter side of Coconut Grove, further down Main Highway. Lopez’ menu is a combination of original creations alongside classic Italian dishes. The molded tuna tartare topped with layers of fresh avocado and homemade crème fraiche, dollops of red and black caviar over chive and truffle oil and soy sauce is a must try. Grouper aqua pazza on a delicate tomato sauce surrounded by clams and mussels and chicken paillard are also great entree choices and coconut flan or panacotta with mixed berry sauce are awesome desserts.
Calamari Restaurant is located at 3540 Main Highway, Coconut Grove
Get a taste of Paris at Bistro Niko
Buckhead needed a casual, French-inspired café and Atlanta’s legendary Buckhead Life Group answered the call with Bistro Niko.
Housed in the luxurious Sovereign, home to both residential and commercial tenants, Bistro Niko is an elegant and easygoing affair. The swanky bar is located on the Peachtree Street side of things but there’s plenty of room for dining on the other side of the clock which centers the beautifully tiled restaurant. The bold splashes of red throughout, not to mention the fancy ceiling, are definitely eye-catching but a restaurant cannot thrive on style alone.
A tin of Icelandic caviar over brioche is totally recommended and surprisingly affordable. For lunch, the Croque “Monsieur,” grilled ham with gruyere cheese, is a popular selection while the Tartare De Boeuf (classic steak tartare) plays well at any meal. The ample selection of more than 50 beers, many from Belgium, is surprisingly refreshing. For more delicate palates, there is the signature Specialite Le St. Germain (St. Germain with champagne) as well as an extensive wine list.
For those who can’t rendezvous in Paris, Bistro Niko is a Southern interpretation fully worthy of the “ooh la la(s)” and “oui, oui(s)” it has received.
Blush at Crimson Lounge
When Hotel Sax came on the Chi-town radar it was quite big news. Replacing the House of Blues Hotel was major pressure and they were up for the challenge. Instead of following in the colorful Moroccan footsteps of their predecessors, Hotel Sax stepped up a classy vibe with all white.
With the hotel of course, the need for an amazing lounge slash club was definitely needed and again, Hotel Sax delivered. Crimson Lounge pulls lines for entrance, lines of beautiful people waiting for beautiful cocktails.
Come on a night when DJ resident Samantha Ronson, ex of crazy Lindsay Lohan and expect to wait your pretty time to get in if you don’t arrive early.
Whiskey Blue Is the Place To Feel Like A Rock Star
There’s no better place to feel like a rock star than Whiskey Blue. Of course the weekends are maddening but the weekdays aren’t too shabby either. Wednesday typically attracts the business crowd but there’s nothing boring about making dollars.
As a hotel guest, it’s easy to access the rooftop party from within the hotel but it might be worth entering it from the street just to ride up in elevator with the couch and cross the bridge to excitement.
The bar is a stylish slither so it’s only natural to meet people. Small bites like the yummy tuna spring rolls and lamb sausage pizza from Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s Market downstairs are available until 10pm. Move past the bar and the space opens up slightly. Wood-paneled walls and yacht-club inspired furnishings create a warm and intimate vibe and then, the DJ is barely noticeable all the way in the back. There’s also seating parallel to the bar, hence the slithering gap.
Now if a city view and fresh air is a must, take the right just past the bar, through a glass door and behold a clear view of the city. To really soak in the al fresco vibe, though, go to the other side and stay awhile. Cabanas divided by a mini-garden of sorts, well shrubbery and other trappings of nature, work for all seasons thanks to heat lamps.
Drinks are seasonal and pretty standard for most bars in the Gerber Group stable. The Bubblicious, made with bubblegum vodka, is super fun. Mojitos come in multiple flavors, including strawberry, blueberry, mangomint and ginger. And, there’s lots of whiskey too.
It’s a nonstop party at Whiskey Blue. No wonder the beautiful people can’t leave it alone.
The W Buckhead Pops for Atlanta
Sexy, fun, and vibrant but definitely respectable enough to get some business done, the W Buckhead stands out from Atlanta’s other Ws while still retaining its local charm. Simultaneously retro and modern chic, the lobby has many floral details that recall the 1950s/1960swithout any hint of stuffiness though.
Rooms are typically cozy but there are eleven suites for larger ambitions. Of them, the Extreme Wow Suite is all that and more. Spacious beyond imagination, with an eclectically, stylish pop that would make Andy Warhol proud, there’s a half bath as well as a full bath designed for two. Dreamy beds are a W standard and so are the ever nice plasma screens and the uber-fab bliss products.
Staying in the room is so boring so get fit at Sweat (where cable goes well with treadmills), cool off at Wet (the adorable pool overlooking Peachtree) and dance it off at Whiskey Blue (their elevated, rooftop club). Hungry? Just dine at Market, a delicious part of the Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s culinary empire, or lounge at Living Room.
Actually, if clothes were not required, the Living Room might rival the rooms. It has plasma TVs plus comfortably oversized chairs and nice couches which help getting neighborly a breeze. Music by a jazz trio or DJ isn’t uncommon either. And, then, there are nibbles like the truffle pizza and lamb chops from Market plus great drinks like the truly fantastic ginger margarita.
It’s pop life for sure at the W Buckhead.
Ocean Prime Sumptious Sophistication
To say that Dallas has enjoyed having Ocean Prime in its line-up of seafood offerings is an understatement. Since bursting on the scene, this sophisticated fine dining establishment has created impeccable service, gigantic and delicious shrimp and decadent desserts – Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie, anyone?
Besides offering an array of tasty morsels for lunch and dinner, the specialty menus are a standout. Blueberry French Toast is an interesting twist on an old favorite, and the Lobster and Eggs is a to-die-for combo. If you’re feeling particularly hungry, order the Chilean Sea Bass with Glazed Carrots and Champagne Truffle Sauce, which tastes especially lovely with Candied Yams with Marshmallow Brulee. With such an outstanding menu and frequent live entertainment, the only thing standing between you and total satisfaction is the valet parking your vehicle outside Ocean Prime’s front doors.

“SEI” Hello to a First Lady Favorite
For a chic evening out, head to SEI – the Japanese-inspired hotspot known for its creative cocktails, unexpected sushi rolls and delicious Asian-fusion cuisine. With fresh whitewashed walls and ultra modern artistic touches, SEI sets the mood for the perfect city-chic dining experience.
As one of Michelle Obama’s favorite spots (so much so that she had SEI cater a White House gathering), it’s safe to say that SEI’s inventive cuisine is sure to please even the most prestigious politico’s palate. Pair a tangy Japanese Whisky Sour (egg white, fresh lemon, 5 spice-infused syrup) with a humor-infused roll or two – sushi favorites include the Fish & Chips roll (flounder, malt vinegar, French fries, wasabi tartar sauce) or the Let Us Roll (romaine, carrots, Caesar dressing). For those looking for a more substantial dish, try the Mini Kobe Sliders with tomato jam and tempura onion rings. For a sweet finish, dig into some Miso Orange Bread Pudding with soy ice cream.
Barbounia’s Where the Mediterranean Meets NYC
If you’re looking for an authentic Mediterranean restaurant with marvelous prices and a fantastic atmosphere, you’re only a cab ride away. Nestled in Gramercy, Barbounia allows its customers a glimpse into a Mediterranean dream. The restaurant is dimly lit and is decorated with towering pillars, ornate arches, and lavish floral arrangements.
The menu boasts many flavorful dishes from the region, specifically the countries of Greece, Morocco, southern France and southern Italy. Such dishes include the Lamb Terracotta, which is Lamb Kebabs served with pepper chutney, pistachios, and tahini wrapped in an oven baked flat bread, and their pan-seared Yellow Fin Tuna served with creamed potatoes and vegetables. While enjoying their meal, customers can also sip on some of the many cocktails offered, including the Barbounia-tini made with fresh aloe-vera juice and foam. But that’s not all, Barbounia also offers a champagne brunch on Sunday where you can get a never ending flow of champagne cocktails for only $12!
Martinis & Manicures at Beauty Bar Chi-Town
Finally. From New York to L.A., the Beauty Bar phenom has taken over the Windy City with a splash… of manicured nails, big bouffantes and poreless faces. Combining the loves of women (and thus men searching for women) everywhere, Beauty Bar fuses cocktails and spa services. Add a dose of dance-inspiring beats, superb people-watching and a new set of glossy red nails, and you’ve got: Beauty Bar.
With celeb DJs and special guest performers like Vampire Weekend, Beauty Bar Chicago makes sure to play homage to its host city by bringing back “Spandexx,” once a popular event at the now-closed lounge, Sonotheque, with DJ Moneypenny, Sadie White and Team Bayside (holler to Saved by the Bell). True to form, the bar is retro deliciousness with mod mirrors, vintage posters, a disco ball and fun retro bar chairs. With a changing list of relevant DJs pumping out inspiring beats, and a disco-ball room inspired for dancing only, this manicure lounge slash bar, also doubles as a fab dance club.
With a fresh coat of paint on your paws, a tasty cocktail in your belly and happy memories swirling in your head, consider this: Beauty Bar is available for private parties and you can shop the look at its store (online too) for fun shirts and kitchy gifts.
Island Rhythms Pulsate from Hoy Como Ayer
Once this place gets going, and since it’s Miami that means LATE, the island rhythms and heavy percussion that emanate from this tiny place in the heart of Calle Ocho in Little Havana are intoxicating. Hoy Como Ayer is a trip to the Cuban Havana of old with a blend of sounds from the present day hot Latin acts that have made a name for themselves in the Magic City.
Hoy Como Ayer (which means “Today Like Yesterday”) is consistently ranked by most local publications as the best place to catch Latin performers, because the best play here. Cuban-born singer Albita performs here regularly, the Latin-funk-fusion band DJ Le Spam, and the All Stars (they’re local faves and always pack the house), along with Luis Bofil and David Bisbal all grace the stage. It’s one giant jamfest here from Wednesday to Sunday and the drinks are, of course, the best, from refreshing Mojitos to the rum and cokes, better known in Miami as “Cuba Libre.”
This Martini’s Not Dirty, it’s Blue!
A little tamer than say South Beach and the Design District, but making a name for itself regardless, is the new party spot: Brickell Avenue. When the lawyers, accountants and bankers put their briefcases away and leave what’s known as Miami’s Financial District the area comes alive, and leading the nightlife pack is Blue Martini.
Blue Martini is a cool place to see and be seen after the 9-5, whether it’s for happy hour or late-night. Located inside Mary Brickell Village, it’s easy to start or end the night at Martini thanks to the surrounding restaurants and shops. It’s a seven-day affair when it comes to specials here, with a daily happy hour 4-8 p.m. featuring 1/2 off drinks, live jazz Tuesdays, Latin live entertainment on Thursdays and Three Olives Ladies Night on Wednesdays. Check it out to find out what that means!
Delano is an Icon of Deco South Beach
Others may come and go, but the Delano is the hotel that set the tone for what has become hip and happening in the South Beach scene. That pool, ohhh that pool, sets the standard for the rest of what represents “livin’ it up” in Miami. Sitting beachfront and a stone’s throw away from Lincoln Road and its thriving nightlife, Delano is simply where it’s at.
Inside, the place is decorated by room so that each area provides a different experience. White is by far the predominant color with guest rooms awash in the crisp, clean hue, from the luxurious penthouse to the more subdued, but still uber cool, rooms and suites. A rooftop spa offers a 360 degree view of nothing but turquoise ocean as far as the eye can see.
And of course, stay for some great nightlife and dining. After all, there’s the classic Blue Door, the hotel’s original and award-winning restaurant, along with Plat Bleu, and for cocktails and people watching (ahem, celeb spotting), there’s the elegant Rose Bar.
Salsa is Smokin’ Hot at Cafe Cocomo
Voted one of the ten best places in the country to “dip into the salsa scene” by USA Today, Café Cocomo, in the revived Potrero Hill neighborhood, is the hottest place to get your Latin dance on west of Miami. With the same beat-induced sexy atmosphere as clubs like the Copacabana in NYC and the Conga Room in LA, San Francisco offers one of its own.
There’s room for every salsa lover at Cafe Cocomo, with two levels of indoor and outdoor dancing. All levels from beginner to ballroom star are welcome here – it’s all about having fun! And with lots of seating in the outdoor patio that features waterfalls, tiki huts, and an island-style bar, you can take a rest from the crowd and enjoy the stars.
Cocomo even offers lessons for anyone who can’t get enough at the Thursday and Saturday dance parties. Whether you’re out to add some spice to your nightlife, or looking for a killer ballroom routine, be prepared, because this salsa party is HOT!
1. NYC’S First Official Oscar Party March 1-7
New York is usually the first on every trend, but this time they’re following a great one that has been going on across the US for years: an official Oscar party. On March 7, NYC & Company will be hosting the first ever “Oscar Night and the City,” NYC’s Official Oscar Night American celebration. Located at the prestigious Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall, this event is as glamorous as the one in Hollywood with a cocktail and hors d’oeuvres reception and an official broadcast viewing party where you can have either a “starring role” or “supporting role,” depending on your tickets.
For those who can’t make the Oscar bash, NYC & Co is hosting events for the entire week leading up to the broadcast with an Oscar-winning movie marathon featuring NYC-themed films and several exhibits, all at Lincoln Center.
Cretia is Nightlife’s Sweet Spot
You might not immediately think of Cretia’s as a hopping nightlife spot if you’ve never been. Oh, you’ve heard they have an incredible (affordable!) brunch and killer desserts? But at night, it has live music, an expansive patio and bars packed with more action than a Bruce Willis movie. Open until 2:00 a.m. with free valet, Cretia’s has several different rooms inside the bar/restaurant, each decorated with a slightly gothic style. The atmosphere ranges from hipster romantic to raging party, depending on the night and the music.
The stocked Ruby Bar is reason enough to spend your evening here, but if you come early enough, treat yourself to the sinful desserts at the bakery. You’ll never go wrong with the White Sour Cream Cake and Chocolate Bourbon Pecan Pie. So the next time you feel like getting your groove on (and perhaps giving in to your sweet tooth), head down McKinney to find all your favorites in one spot.
LoHi SteakBar Raises the Stakes—and the Bar
When locals heard chef-about-town Sean Kelly had turned up at this smart, sexy Lower Highlands spot, they swarmed in pronto—and they haven’t left since. Hopping nightly with the city’s hipper foodies, LoHi SteakBar features a highly likeable menu that centers on an array of steak frites and burgers, rounded out by funky snacks, sandwiches, and sides—from blue cheese fondue to rock shrimp po’boys to creamed spinach, plus retro desserts like banana splits.
The bar mixes a mean cocktail or two as well, including a fresh update of the banana daiquiri, and 3-for-1 bloodies come with weekend brunch.
Sexy People, Champagne and Beats at Cuvee
It’s all about dressing to impress at Cuvee, an uber-chic club/lounge in Chi-town’s River North. For the many fans of Enclave, they are sure to enjoy Cuvee, owned by the same troupe. To enter though, you’ll first have to pass the test, so dress up or you can call it at night at a pizza joint elsewhere. And don’t get confused trying to find your way in, it’s a back alley entrance only.
As the name suggests, the go-to drink here is of course Champagne. As the word cuvée in French- from the region of Champagne specifically- refers to the best of the best in Champagne as it comes from only the first 2,050 liters of the pressed grape juice. DJ beats, sexy crowd and plenty of bubbly make for a great option for dancing, mixing and mingling. As for date night, you may want to skip this one.
Insider Tip: Make a table service reservation online to get the most out of your experience.
Move Over E-Harmony, CAS Gets Sexy and Single
For the upper echelons of San Francisco social life, intelligence is sexy. That’s why Nightlife at the California Academy of Sciences is the hottest new singles and date spot in the city. You get to mingle, sip cocktails, dance to the best beats in the city, and enjoy the academy exhibits without the chaos of daytime school groups. For the 21 and over crowd, it’s a real treat to have the place to yourselves and for once- and not trip over strollers.
Featuring a four-story living rainforest, penguins, a floor-to-ceiling coral exhibit, and just about every other fascinating natural phenomenon, The California Academy of Sciences is the perfect setting for your social event ($60 for private VIP if you prefer), a great conversation starter for first dates, or just a great way to get out on the town without the crowded, dark bar scene.
Be sure to get to the Nightlife event early for the best experience and the least amount of wait times. Unless you had dinner prior to coming to the Academy, tapas-style plates are available, that is – if you can pull yourself away from how bizarre it is to watch a glowing jellyfish while drinking a cosmo.
Spice Up Date Night at Fernbank’s Martinis & IMAX
A trip to the museum has always seemed to be a silent, introspective experience a.k.a. not a hangout spot. The Fernbank Museum has found a way to spice it up with the Martinis and IMAX Friday night movie series where guests sip on delicious cocktails, dance to live music and nibble on delectable bits all beneath the remnants of the dinosaur dynasty.
Martinis and IMAX, presented by Turner, features films such as The Greatest Places, Wild Ocean and Van Gogh’s Brush with the Ocean. This is not your average dinner and a movie; the screen is the world’s largest film format at 5 stories high and 75 feet wide. Why not opt a cocktail for a soda? Cocktail favorites include the Frost Bite Martini, Kentucky Cider and the IMAX original. And boring popcorn is replaced by restaurant worthy menu selections including specialty pizzas, assorted appetizers and desserts.

Wet Your Whistle at WXYZ Bar
It’s the most hassle-free place in Dallas to get a drink if you are a tired convention center attendee…and even if you’re not. The WXYZ bar in the brand new Aloft Hotel is strategically placed across the street from City Hall and the convention center, which makes for some surefire meet-ups with travelers at the bar.
With its colorful lighting and comfy lounge couches, WXYZ might have a nightclub look, but the bartenders are low-key and personable and you don’t have to yell over anyone to order a drink. This is truly a spot to get away from the traditional “see and be seen” crowd and have a quiet conversation and a delicious cocktail. And hey, if you happen to have one too many, you can always check in to one of the hotel’s affordable rooms for close to the same price you might spend on a cab to get home.
Rattlesnake: The Ritz Texas Style
Socialites, scenesters, and celebrities are the heart and soul of the Rattlesnake Bar at the Ritz-Carlton on McKinney Avenue in Uptown. Just like the name of the hotel, everything thing you see here is ritzy and sparkling, but with some Texas cocktail flair.
To put out the vibe that you are a regular VIP, order the Dean’s Margarita with organic agave nectar while nibbling on spring rolls with achiote pulled pork. If that isn’t enough to get you going, sip the Caribbean Caipirinha- a spicy little number that will stir your senses with ginger beer and cachaca, a liquor made from fermented sugarcane. When weather permits, head outside on the patio where the young and the restless are perched on comfortable couches and swarming the small bar to see and be seen.
Though the cocktails can be a little pricey, you won’t find more upscale southern charm or opportunity to rub elbows with the city’s movers and shakers-or perhaps become one yourself. Of all the stylish nightlife spots in Dallas, the crowd here is noticeably high fashion and ready to mingle.
Small Plates Pack Big Flavor at Masa 14
They say that good things come in small packages and at 14 Street’s newest neighborhood haunt, Masa 14, petite equals perfection. Located just north of popular Logan Circle, the Latin-Asian eatery has received a warm welcome from locals, political hotshots and foodies alike. Take one bite of the miso-glazed black cod, and as it melts in your mouth, you’ll understand all the buzz.
A concept co-founded by celebrated DC executive chefs Chef Richard Sandoval (of Zengo fame) and Chef “Kaz” Okochi (Kaz Sushi Bistro), Masa 14 packs huge flavor into a variety of tantalizing Latin and Asian-inspired small plates – delectable little morsels that will definitely leave you wanting “just one more bite.” That’s good news – with reasonable prices and ideal tasting portions, you can have plenty of bites from a mouth-watering menu selection that’s perfect for sharing.
While you wait for a table at the industrial, yet organically chic establishment, grab a seat at the longest bar in DC. Masa 14 boasts a 65-foot bar with extensive tequila, sake and cocktail selections. For a refreshing start to the evening, order some spicy edamame and have one of the trendy, European bartenders concoct you a “Strawberry Lemonade” to cool off – a perfectly tart blend of vodka, fresh strawberry puree and fresh lemon juice for an extra kick.
Insider Tip: Stick around for some after-hours fun, because Masa 14 features a DJ on most weekend nights. Pair that with a couple of cocktails and a seat at the central communal table, and you’ll be sure to leave with more friends than you came in with.
Seasonal Affective Disorder? Laugh it Off at Zanies
If you think the Second City is the only place to have a good laugh in Old Town, think again. Just a block down from the famous Second City is Zanies Comedy Club where you can find the best stand-up the city has to offer. Comedians from places like Comedy Central, HBO (regular appearances by Jeff Green and Suzie Essman), late night shows and of course, hot, new local talent perform on Zanie’s famously small stage. Recently, Zanies partnered with TBS for “A Very Funny Festival,” hosting shows with stars from TBS.
The intimate surroundings of Zanies make for heartier laughs. Here you are likely to get called upon by the comedians and after the two drinks you’re required to consume, you probably won’t care. To be fair, avoiding the two-drink purchase may be done with canned goods donations.
With a calendar full of shows, finding fun themes is oh-so-simple like “Ladies Night,” “Rising Star Challenge,” and “Best of Chicago.”
Insider Tip: Buy tickets to big shows in advance (online) as the big names do sell out and long lines form at the club, even on weeknights.
A Century of Music at This Great American Hall
The Great American Music Hall has been described many ways: opulent, warm, friendly, even sanctified. Whatever your adjectives, this place is just plain fun, from the smiles at the red velvet-draped front door to the energy of the crowd buzzing off the ceiling frescoes. Having hosted such diverse big names as Duke Ellington, Billy Joel, The Grateful Dead, and Van Morrison, this gracious Victorian hall has charmed San Francisco throughout the twentieth century.
This 5000 square foot concert hall has seen many changes since its opening in 1907. Constantly upgrading the sound system and restoring anything that begins to lose luster, the Great American Music Hall takes pride in providing you with the best intimate music experience. You can even book the venue for private wedding receptions, product launches, holiday parties, and bar mitzvahs.
When spending the evening here you have no choice but to leave the hustle of the city behind, grab a drink at the restored Victorian bar, and let go of your troubles on the oak dance floor. Why not enjoy one hundred years of history and modern entertainment all in one evening?
City Bar Infuses Great Drinks
Even though Happy Hour no longer exists in Boston, don’t tell that to the patrons of City Bar at the Lenox Hotel. The hotel bar is packed nightly with an after-work crowd who come for the one-of-a-kind Infusions Diabolique, hand-infused spirits spiked with natural ingredients, like the popular Angelique tequila infused with mango, lime and pineapple.
Of course, there are also a variety of martinis (including a refreshing basil gimlet), single malts, ports, liqueurs, champagnes, beer and wine on the menu, but the infusions are a must here. If you get hungry, order up some snacks, which come from the neighboring City Table. A late night eclectic menu consists of duck confit spring rolls, chicken drumettes with Diabolique rum along with citrus and rosemary marinated olives.
City Bar also has a second location at the Westin Boston Waterfront on Summer Street where you can still get the same great drinks if you can’t make it over to Back Bay. Check out citybarboston.com for more information.
An Unbelievable Point of View at POV Roof Terrace
In the mood for a sexier side of DC? Head up to POV (“Point of View”), DC’s trendiest rooftop bar and lounge, situated just across from The White House at the new, boutique W Hotel. Anticipation will rise as you make your way up to the 11th floor terrace, accompanied by an attractive, clipboard-bearing staff member. Be sure to do a little star gazing on your way up – the shimmering constellations on the elevator ceiling resemble the same pattern as that on the night of July 4, 1776!
Doors open and….WOW. Once you’ve recovered from the mind-blowing views where you can literally touch The White House and the glowing Washington Monument is spectacular. Grab a seat at one of the comfy, red velveteen banquettes and sip one of NYC cocktail guru Sasha Petraske’s sinful concoctions as you spy on the neighbors. After a few drinks, patrons swear they can see the lights flicker as the Obamas say goodnight to Washington.
With fresh juices poured from glass beakers and a customized ice program (certain drinks get ice spears vs. chiseled from a block), there’s no doubt Petraske’s creations are a true marriage of both science and art. Be sure to try his famous Dark & Stormy, made with zesty homemade ginger beer.
Insider Tip: Be sure to make a reservation beforehand (smaller parties should use opentable.com) – the hotel reserves a certain amount of seating for their guests whether they show or not, and the line halts at the elevator.
Free to Get Into Trouble at Trendy Alibi
Tucked inside one of Boston’s hottest and trendiest hotels, the Liberty Hotel, is Alibi. This lounge takes the bar scene literally as it’s on the lower level of the one time residence of the Boston Strangler- The Charles Street Jail.
Paying homage to its past, the lowly-lit lounge/club has celebrity mugshots on the wall from Frank Sinatra to Miss Lohan. The cocktails are aptly named as well, like the Jailbait and Courtney Love. During the day this is a perfect hotel lounge complete with a finger food menu, but at night- and especially on the weekends- the DJ’s come in, the lights are turned down, and the hot twenty-somethings of Boston are lining out the door to get in. Check out the website at alibiboston.com.
Do You Know the Cha Cha Cha?
Away from the bright tourist lights of North Beach and Union Square, most San Francisco locals head to the Mission District after hours, where one can find the most entertaining fusions of food and nightlife in the city.
One of the Bay Guardian Newspaper’s “Best of the Bay” winners several years in a row, Cha Cha Cha on Mission Street is the perfect way to pre-game your evening. This neighborhood favorite features an extensive tapas selection, including Platanos Maduros (tropical sweet bananas with black beans and sour cream) and Ceviche Del Dia (seafood in a spicy lime vinagrette). There are so many favorites from the tapas menu that most groups have no problem compromising on ordering one of each dish! There is plenty to go around.
One thing to be sure of when starting an evening here is ordering a pitcher of Cha Cha Cha’s famous sangria. The bartenders also make a killer Caipirinha, with Cachaca Ypioca (a Brazilian rum), sugar, and fresh lime. Of course, if the traditional Latin drinks aren’t your thing, the bar has plenty of microbrew beers or sweet cocktails to suit you.
Cool River Scores Big With the Little Things
Oftentimes, it’s the little things that really make a difference between a good time and a great time. Cool River in Las Colinas knows the little things count, and adds those extra touches to keep patrons coming back for more. First little detail? A coat check. It might be old-school, but the class and convenience of a coat check is especially welcome on nights out when you want to dance and don’t want to be bogged down with accessories. Another interesting perk is the cigar room; choose any of the reasonably priced cigars off the menu and enjoy a relaxing smoke. If this all sounds a little too stuffy for your taste, don’t worry. A DJ spinning the latest hits or live bands, like the quirky “Space Rockers,” keep the dance floor moving until the wee hours.
Traditional food and libations of all kinds provide sustenance, and if you want to enjoy your meal in a quieter setting, the dining room is available as well. Cool River has something for everyone, and those little touches speak volumes about big atmosphere.
San Francisco From the Stars at The Starlight Room
You don’t need a time machine to party in 1930’s glam style, just take the elevator to the top floor at the Starlight Room. Priding himself with more style and attention to detail as other nightclub owners, socialite Harry Denton has done the classic penthouse lounge justice.
With a glittery panorama of downtown, including Union Square’s designer shops and the Bay Bridge, the Starlight Room is a place to relax and enjoy the view. While the bar offers many ‘Million Dollar Cocktails’ such as the $200 Angels Share snifter of cognac, and 20 yr. old Tawny Port with walnut liqueur and Chartreuse, they also offer a drink called ‘The Recession’”– PBR in a brown paper bag for $4.
If you’ve done your research and made VIP reservations, a plush booth for six awaits you with your bottle of choice, where cocktails are mixed and served right at your table.
Expect to see it all at the Starlight room, from club-hopping 20-somethings and performing drag queens to convention-going doctors and lawyers. Everyone comes here because of the sophistication of the scene, and to dance amongst the stars.
Illuminate Yourself at Lumen
Meatpacking district in Chicago. Confused? Chi-town also has a meatpacking district and it happens to be at the cusp of the fastlane. Known as Fulton Market, this ‘hood is opening up hot little numbers each and every month. Whether it’s the bistro-du-jour or a great new lounge, this neighborhood is a bouncin’.
One of the newer favorites is the contemporary lounge-slash-dance space, Lumen. With 5,000 square feet of space, Lumen describes itself as “a visual indulgence for the eyes,” so too is the crowd that adorns it. Those there to chill and those there to dance all have one thing in common: they’re dressed to impress.
The 3-D sound system and accompanying uber-technologically advanced light system at Lumen is enough to transport guests to a true escape. The sound? Depending on the night you’ll find your regular hot-list for Chicago party-goers: jazz, chill-lounge and deep house.
As for the social elixir of life to keep you going whilst there? Choose amongst their chic list of cocktails all bearing the name of a different locale: Tahiti, Casablanca, Geneva. Havana, and Milan.
There isn’t a drink called “Meat-packer” – yet.
Join the Jet Setters at Degrees Bar and Lounge
The lounge in the Ritz-Carlton Georgetown will have you stepping back in time to the glamorous 1940s. The décor is stunning with black slate floors, exposed brick walls and a sleek bar. This is one of the most popular DC lounges where the cool, hip thirty-somethings and jet setters alike come to relax from the stress of the Capital.
The cocktail menu is as impressive as the hotel setting with each one being a classic drink with a contemporary twist. Order the hotel’s signature drink, The Fahrenheit Five Martini, and then order off of the cigar menu to properly sit back, relax, and fall back in time as if you’re the star in a film noir.
Sleep Chic at The Donovan House
Step away from the political frenzy and into the intimate, modern oasis of The Thompson Hotel Group’s The Donovan House. Located just off Thomas Circle on busy 14th Street, this boutique hotel, known for its impeccable service, is a breath of fresh air from the notoriously “stuffy” Washington hotels. The sleek, minimalist decor and swanky vibe are perfect for the hip, sophisticate looking to take advantage of the nation’s Capitol.
Open since early 2008, The Donovan House boasts just under 200 rooms, outfitted in stark white decor with unique cocoon-like showers and dramatic, extended leather headboards. Freshen up after a long trip with complimentary Kiehl’s bath products or indulge in the fabulous Dean & Deluca mini bar before cozying up to luxurious Sferra sheets.
Insider Tip: For added value, book in the warmer months and be sure to take advantage of The Donovan House’s exclusive rooftop bar and pool lounge, ADC (“Above DC”). Take in breathtaking views while you sip a cool cocktail or two at DC’s trendiest warm-weather hotspot.
Drink Like You Never Have Before
There’s something intriguing about drinking in a dark room, especially when you have to go down a speakeasy-reminiscent stairway to do it. Barbara Lynch, grande dame of Boston culinary royalty, is well aware of this appeal.
Drink, her fairly recent endeavor into the throwback spirits craze, is tucked into the basement of 348 Congress Street, in the otherwise nighttime-sleepy Fort Point. Dark enough to be its own brand of thrilling, Drink is still laid back enough to be comfortable.
You won’t find cocktail menus at drink. Simply tell the bartenders what you’re looking for and they decide for you. And we would suggest avoiding the simple “I like gin” route. Customers can suggest spicy or tart or even all-around surprising and the bartenders are more than happy to oblige. Go ahead–just try to stump them. And an added FYI? Make sure to try the Trinidad Sour. Check out the website at drinkfortpoint.com.
