Great Place for Pictures

Great Place for Pictures

Head on over to Lombard Street and where people drive down the crooked, one-block section, and if you have a car you can drive down it yourself. On a busy day, a seemingly endless stream of automobiles and scooters buzz down, their passengers squealing in mock fear at every turn. If you’re on foot, you can walk down (or up) the sidewalks and watch, but be sure to bring a camera because you’ll be in for a show.

Best Spot to Grab a Bite

Best Spot to Grab a Bite

The Reading Terminal Market has been one of the most popular Philadelphia spots since 1892. It has not lost a bit of its popularity since its opening and is still very much a market, selling produce, meats, traditional Amish Foods, fresh hand baked pretzels, Bassett’s world famous Ice cream, and more.

As one of the city’s first and foremost food courts, there’s plenty of options for food and drink, but after taking a walk around the market you must get a DiNic’s pulled pork sandwich, which gives even the famous Cheesesteak a run for its money. Take your sandwich on over to the Beer Garden and wash it down with a local brew, while you sit back and relax in this beautiful spot for a true Philadelphian experience.

Best Place for an Autumn Stroll

Best Place for an Autumn Stroll

The historic homes of many of Philadelphia’s rowing clubs provide one of its most famous sights—Boathouse Row, which is even prettier at night, when the lights outlining the homes reflect onto the Schuylkill River.

The boathouses are home to several active rowing clubs overseen by the Schuylkill Navy of Philadelphia, but rowing isn’t the only recreation that takes place here. Take a stroll down Philadelphia’s most popular paved trail, the Schuylkill River Trail, which is especially beautiful during the Fall. This is a perfect place for walkers, runners, bikers, and everyone else who simply wants to enjoy the stunning scenery.

The Hill’s Stacie Hall: Getting Away From The Drama

Citybuzz Los Angeles blogger Jessica Ingber interviews Stacie Hall

stacy hall hills189stacie use kcsh4

How has the hills changed the way you view your city?

The Hills mainly focuses on Hollywood and the trendy places to go and hang out. Filming in different places really showed me there is a lot to do and see that’s not just clubs and glamour.

Was some of your favorite hang outs filmed on the hills? If so which ones?

The best place we filmed on the Hills was obviously Malibu for the summer. We were so fortunate to spend our days on the sand and have beach parties at night.

What do you love about your city?

I love that Los Angeles has it all. We have the city with cool restaurants and shops and only 20 miles from that is beautiful beaches. There’s not a lot of cities that have so many different things to do with very unique people.

What do you love about your city in the summer/fall?

Los Angeles has some of the most gorgeous weather. I love that everyone is very active riding bikes and going on hikes in the mountains.

What are some of your favorite neighborhoods? For eating? Museums? Nightspots?

I really like Hollywood and West Hollywood. I would highly recommend the Farmers Market for small restaurants that have a lot of character and have been around in Los Angeles the longest. The Griffith park observatory is also great and has great views of the city. My favorite Night spot is Teddy’s located in the Roosevelt hotel that has been around longer than most cubs and always draws a big crowd and is never too trendy.

stacie hall the-hills-are-alive-with-the-sight-of-kristin-cavallari-and-stacie-the-bartender-in-bikinis-page-view-img-1

What is your favorite place to shop in the city?

I really enjoy the flea markets and farmers markets. You can spend your weekends browsing antiques and finding really original stuff. There’s a great place to find fresh fruit and a lot of local business’s at the farmers market near the grove.

What inspires you about your city?

I feel really lucky to be around so much history and old Hollywood glamour. Los Angeles is one of the places people can only dream about going and making there dreams come true.

Do you have an insider tip for tourists visiting your city for the first time?

If you’re a first time visitor I recommend going to check out Hollywood and Highland were the man Chinese theater and the Hollywood stars are.

Are you a regular somewhere? Local hangout?

I like trying new places whenever I can but I cant seem to get away from Venice beach!!! There’s always so much to do there including roller blading and riding bikes.

Do you have a secret spot in the city (to unwind, get away, people watch, read a book, escape) and why?

One of the most peaceful places is the top of Runyon canyon. It’s a short hike up the mountain and has views all the way to the ocean.

Broadway Bodies with Thomas Farely.

Broadway Cardio” at Broadway Bodies was a better workout, and “Dance Workout” at Downtown Dance Factory was definitely more hip. Both had enthusiastic instructors who eased my first-timers’ nervousness. The fun factor of each was about even for me—I recommend trying whichever type of music is more your style. Both studios also offer additional classes, from Michael Jackson Mondays to Rock n’ Roll Ballet.

2. Beethoven’s 9th at Grant Park Music Fest – August 14

To close the seventy-fifth season, Carlos Kalmar and the GPO take back the outdoors and are joined by Christopher Bell’s vastly under-appreciated Grant Park Chorus and soprano Amber Wagner, mezzo-soprano Kathryn Leemhuis, tenor John McVeigh and bass Jason Grant in the monumental Beethoven Ninth Symphony. Those quiet sections will give traffic a chance to compete but by the time of the glorious finale, street noise won’t have a prayer against all of those forces blaring away and singing out about the brotherhood of man.

1. Calder to Warhol at SFMOMA’s 75th Anniversary July 1-31

The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is celebrating its 75th sfmoma 75 anniversaryanniversary with an enormous exhibit of over 1,000 iconic works by artists like Alexander Calder, Roy Lichtenstein, Chuck Close, and easily the most recognizable, pop-artist Andy Warhol. There will also be plenty of sculptures on the beautiful rooftop garden, which has been described as a gallery with no ceiling.  The SFMOMA’s massive permanent collection is still impressive, and for those who are a little baffled as to why a line of Campbell’s soup cans counts as art, there’s the “Making Sense of Modern Art” mobile tour, which can help viewers read between the lines of those Marilyn Monroe prints.

2. Renoir Pays a Visit to the Philly Museum of Art July 1-31

renoir exhibitThe Musée d’Orsay is collaborating with the Philadelphia Museum of Art to bring the work of painting superstar Pierre Renoir to Philly for a limited time.  While he’s best known for his works, Le Moulin de la Galette and Luncheon of the Boating Party, the consensus of the art world is that his most innovative time was near the end of his life. Pretty impressive, considering he was one of the originators of the impressionist movement.  This exhibit features these later works and the way Renoir used color in a way that influenced artists for generations to come, and the exhibit will feature several artists, such as Picasso, who were notably influenced by Renoir’s later years.

1. Bill Cosby Hosts the Playboy Jazz Festival June 12-13

Picture 69Adding to Hugh Hefner’s already “eclectic” range of tastes, this June marks the 32nd year of the star-studded Playboy Jazz Festival.  Not only will Bill Cosby be presiding over the event, but the legendary lineup contains some of the biggest names in jazz, including George Benson, Manhattan Transfer, Marcus Miller, Los Van Van and Chick Corea.  For the diehard jazz fan, there are also a few silver screens reserved to give some intimate coverage of each and every artist at the festival.  This is going to be a great event, because there’s no better way to listen to jazz is in full Hef style: with a tobacco pipe and a room filled with bunnies.

1. Feel the Love at the Haight-Ashbury Street Fair June 13

Picture 80Famous for its top notch music scene (Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Metallica, Janis Joplin- just to name a few) and its “summer of love” appeal, the Haight-Ashbury Street Fair is a phenomenon like none other.  It was developed by Harvey Milk, the first openly Gay District supervisor who was played by Sean Penn in the 2008 eponymous Gus Van Sant movie. The annually held fair promises to feature plenty of arts and crafts, live music, food booths, and idyllic hippie hand-holding circles. It’s been going strong for 28 years, so it’s safe to say that there are very few places a person could go on June 13th that would have more cultural diversity than the Haight-Ashbury Street Fair.

1. Play Me, I’m Yours Street Pianos June 1-30

Picture 89People in cities all over the world- London to Buenos Aires- have been spotting pianos in the street. They’re available for looking, touching, playing, and even decorating, and it turns out that it’s all actually part of Luke Jerram’s artwork.  Now, he wants people to participate and create music right in the streets of New York, so he has installed over 130 pianos in parks, train stations, bridges, markets, and ferries all over the city.  The majority of these pianos are already world travelers, having been as far around the globe as Sydney.  When the event started, there were only fourteen pianos, and now there are many more, so don’t be surprised when there’s a mysterious waltz coming from around the corner.

1. Chow Down at Coral Gables Restaurant Week June 7-20

Picture 74From June 7th to June 20th, more than 25 restaurants in Coral Gables are offering a massive discount with sumptuous three course prix fixe menus.  The roster includes an eclectic selection of international flavors, including Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse, the Mediterranean Por Fin Restaurant and Lounge, Le Provencal Bistro and many other Coral Gables hot spots. After you and your crew have eaten like royalty, walk it off with a leisurely stroll down Miracle Mile, which has tons of amazing shops. If you can’t decide what kind of feast you’d like to partake in, head to Taste of the Gables on Friday, June 4th, which kicks-off Restaurant Week with samples of all the best meals for the days to follow.

2. Calder to Warhol at SFMOMA’s 75th Anniversary June 25-30

Picture 81The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is celebrating its 75th anniversary with an enormous exhibit of over 1,000 iconic works by artists like Alexander Calder, Roy Lichtenstein, Agnes Martin, and easily the most recognizable, pop-artist Andy Warhol.

2. Fill it Up at Philly Beer Week June 4-13

Picture 78As America’s best beer-drinking city and a stone’s throw from Penn State – the school known as the biggest party school in the country – one would expect Philly would have a pretty impressive selection of alcohol.  Well, with Philly Beer Week, visitors can get a taste of the drinks that make Philadelphia such a wild place at night.  With all kinds of events, from the showcase of the finest breweries at the Opening Tap event, to the nearly philosophical Forum of the Gods, which is nothing less than an afternoon of spirited beer-talk (and drinking), this festival is sure to quench any beer lover’s thirst.

2. Free Concerts Galore in Central Park June 1-30

Anyone who lives in NYC knows thatPicture 91 Central Park is the place to go for amazing free concerts in the summer.  They have a wildly eclectic selection that ranges from The New York Philharmonic to Miley Cyrus.  Good Morning America will be Partying in the USA with Miley on the 18th and then there’s Sarah MacLachlan on the 11th, Alicia Keys on the 25th, and the Jonas Brothers on the 21st.  While GMA’s concerts are in the morning, they’re also broadcast on national television, which kind of balances it out.  Also, don’t miss Summerstage’s Melody Gardot and The New York Pops on the 1st, because as the largest independent pops orchestra in America, they know how to have a good time, too.

2. Father’s Day at Rodeo Drive’s Concours d’Elegance June 20

Picture 72Calling all car connoisseurs, in honor of Jaguar’s 75th anniversary, Rodeo Drive is the place to be this Father’s Day for the Concours d’Elegance.  Not only will attendees be able to see over 100 collector cars from Jaguars to muscle cars to hot rods to Woodys, but this event is also the premiere of Jaguar’s new classic, the XJ.  This is the perfect event for dads who really dig the finer points of auto appreciation, because it was recently named one of the “300 Unmissable Events & Festivals Around the World” by Frommer’s Magazine.  If your family is not as pumped about horsepower as you, Rodeo Drive is filled with plenty of shops and sightseeing for the rest of the family- so you can enjoy those beauties in peace.

2. Adam Sandler & More at Summer Short Play Fest June 3-27

Picture 75Want to go to the theater, but don’t have time to sit through Othello for three and a half hours? Then the Miami Summer Shorts Festival is definitely the perfect option.  With the world premiere of award-winning Lisa Loeb and the Sons of Anarchy writer Marco Ramirez’s new musical, and new work by Christopher Durang, Adam Sandler, Rolin Jones and a reprise of Rich Orloff’s Matterhorn, these shorts sure know how to deliver the most entertainment in the least amount of time.  This festival covers its bases with dramas, musicals, farces, comedies and even mysteries, so there’s bound to be something to suit everyone’s tastes.

3. Head to the Star-Studded American Black Film Fest June 23-26

Picture 76Not only showcasing the best films worldwide from African-American artists, the American Black Film Festival is a hotbed for some of the biggest stars in Hollywood.  Lee Daniels, the director of Precious and the recipient of six Oscar nominations this year, including Best Director, is this year’s honoree.  Hollywood superstar Spike Lee will be teaching a class for aspiring filmmakers, and tons of other stars are booked to attend, like Idris Elba, Steve Duncan, and 3,000 other industry insiders as well.  Be sure to dress Miami chic, as this event is practically red carpet at night.

3. Renoir Pays a Visit to the Philly Museum of Art June 17-30

Picture 79The Musée d’Orsay is collaborating with the Philadelphia Museum of Art to bring the work of painting superstar Pierre Renoir to Philly for a limited time.

3. Arshile Gorky Begins At MOCA June 6-30

Picture 73Wild abstract expressionist Arshile Gorky’s paintings are headed to Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) this June.  Gorky’s paintings, which have been lauded as having a style and sense of color comparable to Picasso, are gritty and chaotic, and this retrospective is perfect for starting up deep conversations about pain and heartbreak, especially since Gorky died of suicide at a young age.  The colorful paintings that were at the extremely popular retrospective in Philadelphia are now making their way to LA, and will be available for intense contemplation starting in the first week of June.

3. Party With Prince Harry at the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic June 27

Picture 92Some of the biggest names in Polo are competing in style on the historic Governor’s Island, in what has to be one of New York’s move posh and prized events of the summer: Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic.  Not only will HRH Prince Harry be there, who started this annual match to raise money for underprivileged South-African children, but he’ll be facing off with Nacho Figueras, the face of Ralph Lauren Fragrances, in this one-day only event.  Not to mention the fact that the VIP list last year included Madonna, Kate Hudson, Marc Jacobs, Chloe Sevigny and LL Cool J, and this year will be just as fabulous as years past. But no worries, the “common” guest can spring for a table, or have a champagne picnic on the beautiful lawn and feel good about it, because it’s all for a great cause.

Ground Zero Museum Workshop

The Ground Zero Museum Workshop is the brainchild of Gary Marlon Suson, an Honorary FDNY Battalion Chief and the Official Photographer at Ground Zero for the Uniformed Firefighters Association. Visitors are also allowed the rare opportunity to pick up and hold World Trade Center steel and window glass. The non-profit Museum, a must-see before visiting Ground Zero, also benefits numerous 9/11 and Fire Department-related charities and is endorsed by many noted firefighters and 9/11 families. Open to 25 people per tour, which includes a powerful 15-minute video.
