La Brea Tar Pits

The La Brea Tar Pits (or Rancho La Brea Tar Pits) are a cluster of tar pits around which Hancock Park was formed, in the urban heart of Los Angeles. Asphaltum or tar (brea in Spanish) has seeped up from the ground in this area for tens of thousands of years. The tar is often covered with water. Over many centuries, animals that came to drink the water fell in, sank in the tar, and were preserved as bones. The George C. Page Museum is dedicated to researching the tar pits and displaying specimens from the animals that died there. The La Brea Tar Pits are now a registered National Natural Landmark.

Tar pits form when crude oil seeps to the surface through fissures in the Earth’s crust; the light fraction of the oil evaporates, leaving behind the heavy tar, or asphalt, in sticky pools. Tar from the La Brea tar pits was used for thousands of years by local native Americans, as a glue and as waterproof caulking for baskets and canoes. After the arrival of Westerners, the tar from these pits was mined and used for roofing by the inhabitants of the nearby town of Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de Los Angeles.

Black America West Museum

While famous for telling the story of Black cowboys, they are broader than this with interests in the stories of all those early Blacks who came west and performed as miners, soldiers, homesteaders, ranchers, blacksmiths, schoolteachers, lawmen, and every other profession needed to build up the West. In fact, the Museum itself is in the home of Dr. Justina Ford, Colorado’s first Black woman doctor!

The Museum is broken into many diverse exhibits such as our homestead exhibit. There is an exhibit primarily dedicated to the town of Dearfield, Colorado. Dearfield was a Black pioneer town founded by O.T. Jackson in 1910 just east of Greeley, Colorado. It was a bustling town of approximately 500 residents founded on the principles of Booker T. Washington. It was successful until the 1930s when depression, drought and dust storms forced most of the residents back to the cities. In the early 1940s, the town dwindled to about a dozen full time residents and finally ended shortly thereafter. The town is now a ghost town and the Museum owns many of the city lots. Red O

A collaborative effort between Mike Dobson and Rick Teasta of Ma’Kai Lounge and Mexican maestro chef Rick Bayless. The atmosphere is outstanding. Elegant, and modern, not over the top but enough to make you notice. Nothing is sparred here at Red O.

Mooncake Foods

Mooncake Foods is home-cooked Asian comfort food, as interpreted by a food lover who grew up influenced by the yummy foods of his Spanish Brooklyn neighborhood and the addictive cooking of his Chinese Mom. They try to create a new kind of Asian restaurant. Mooncake Foods breaks all traditions – no woks, no unhealthy fryers, no processed meat entrees, and no heavy heart-clogging sauces. What you’ll find on their menu is innovatively grilled, steamed, or roasted plates, salads, and sandwiches.

They use premium quality natural ingredients, organic when possible, and always fresh every day. They work hard and make their dishes from scratch to ensure our quality. For example, they juice their own limes for the base of our sauces, roast their own bell peppers for our sandwiches, make their own chicken stock for the soups, and hand mix and roll every wonton and dumpling.

Rita Hazan: Color Knows No Better

RitaHazanWhen Oprah features you- twice- and Jessica Simpson cheats on the colorist she made famous to be in your hands, you must be someone of high quality. You must be colorist Rita Hazan.

By her humble personality and youthful appearance, one would never know they were in the hands of a beauty master. So our correspondent was shocked to see that when Rita Hazan starts to foil it’s as if a kung-fu ninja has emerged. Rita uses a special folding technique, almost like the FlipFold, that allows the time-consuming process to go remarkably fast with each foil being of the same size.

While this may seem like an accomplishment in itself, it’s the mixture she uses in the back that is true genius. Rita takes time to listen to her clients and hear what they cannot express themselves, ending with results that near perfection. And the color lasts nearly forever in hair terms; the only reason to touch one’s hair after emerging from the salon is to touch up the roots, but never the color.

To add to the experience, make sure to get the special protein hair treatment that leaves even the most butchered of blondes absolutely shiny.

So, sure, stylists get all the credit for the “perfect” cut, but anyone who dyes their hair knows that finding the “perfect” color is nearly impossible. From personal experience, we know Rita Hazan makes the impossible perfectly possible.
