The Cafe That’s Not For The Day

Picture 8The Cafe has been The Castro’s favorite venue for years, welcoming everyone gay and straight to enjoy a one-of-a-kind dancing and drinking experience.  Having recently undergone a multi-million dollar transformation, The Cafe’s makeover is like treating its faithful patrons to a thinner and more successful boyfriend.

Let the thump of The Café’s state of the art sound system lead you upstairs to any of the three bars for a two-for-one happy hour.   Try not to spend the evening staring blindly at any of the 12 HD flat screens, because there’s a much better view on the dance floor.  The Café also features an open-air atrium (complete with retractable glass awning should the weather get touchy) in the middle of the bar to help cool off after that Michael Jackson dance routine.

It’s been a long-standing tradition in the Castro to meet any night of theweek for The Cafe’s legendary happy hour.  You’ll see many familiar faces so don’t be afraid to go alone.  If all this isn’t enough, the bartenders are appealing too.

Crissy Field: Weekend Windsurfing & Everything Else

Looking for an all-purpose, exquisitely maintained outdoor venue without the private club membership? Head to Crissy Field in the Marina District, where boredom and inactivity are not an option. This is where San Francisco spends its weekends: on windsurfing boards, kayaks, nature trails, dog-friendly beaches, bike paths, and open lawns.

Crissy Field is also the perfect place to photograph the Golden Gate Bridge, with no need to drive to the north viewing terrace in Sausalito, let alone homepage_san_fransicopay for the toll or the fancy postcards. Not to mention you can kill two birds with one stone, since Alcatraz, “The Rock,” is just off the coast in the center of the bay. Stick around with your blankets and folding chairs for sunset over the bridge- it’s a soft, romantic light show you won’t want to miss.

Originally a US Mail Airfield, Crissy Field has been transformed by the community through years of native plant restoration, historic preservation, and refurbished park amenities. All the years have paid off as this is now an amazing venue for the beach, sightseeing, and everything in between.

Atlanta was once a city that was pedestrian friendly, however with new outdoor attractions like Atlantic Station and the revamped Underground Atlanta, its giving Atlantans an excuse to park the car and walk. The First Thursdays Art Stroll allows you to not only enjoy the artwork created by local artists, both student and professional, but also appreciate the art of the city.

Started by the Central Atlanta Progress Organization, this is part of the city’s initiative to bring the public & private sectors together for better downtown living. From 5-8PM on the first Thursday of each month, art lovers from all walks-of-life can tour historic buildings including the Fairlie-Popular District. Create your own path throughout the downtown scene, but be sure to visit a few hotspots along the way: Rialto Center for the Arts, Paige Harvey Art Studio, and the Museum of Design Atlanta (the only museum in the Southeast dedicated to design).

Grab your friends, park your car, and talk a stroll under the lights of Atlanta’s skyline for the First Thursdays Art Stroll.

Join the Jet Setters at Degrees Bar and Lounge

The lounge in the Ritz-Carlton GeorgetoPicture 9wn will have you stepping back in time to the glamorous 1940s. The décor is stunning with black slate floors, exposed brick walls and a sleek bar. This is one of the most popular DC lounges where the cool, hip thirty-somethings and jet setters alike come to relax from the stress of the Capital.

The cocktail menu is as impressive as the hotel setting with each one being a classic drink with a contemporary twist. Order the hotel’s signature drink, The Fahrenheit Five Martini, and then order off of the cigar menu to properly sit back, relax, and fall back in time as if you’re the star in a film noir.

Patty Tobin Does Big Bling for Little

Jewelry Designer Patty Tobin’s self-named flagship store has garnered frequent visits from some of NYC’s most respected women: news anchors, magazine editors, and politicians’ wives just to name a few.

The reason they visit the unassuming Chelsea store is for the big, one-of-a-kind jewels at prices that don’t match the quality of the work. Prices are from $65 to $895 for everything from pearl drop earrings to chunky onyx necklaces with gold and Swarovski laden ombre clasps. It sounds luxurious, and it is, at prices that make one-of-a-kind attainable for all.

Exploratorium Allows You To Do Just That

At most museums you are told “Do Not Touch,” but that’s the exact opposite of the intention at San Francisco’s Exploratorium. This institution’s goal is to promote museums as education centers, and here they like their visitors to learn by doing. Whether it’s creating a tornado with your feet, putting samples under a microscope, or getting your hands wet touching sea creatures, the unique Exploratorium has hundreds of exhibits for your enjoyment in science, art, and human perception.

Center City’s Anthropologie Is All That & More

PHIanthropologieThere aren’t many retailers that are as fabulous as Anthropologie, but four stories of it? It’s like Christmas came early! Anthro started out near Philadelphia and boasts one of its most beautiful stores in Center City.

Located on the coveted corner of 18th and Walnut on Rittenhouse Square, this store takes your breath away as you walk up the oversized central spiral staircases. Even if you end up without a purchase (this branch has only women’s apparel and home goods), a look around the building will be a treat in itself. Even boyfriends and husbands won’t mind taking a peak around this impressive building. This is a definite stop while in the Rittenhouse sector.

Luxury and Elegance at The Rittenhouse Hotel

There’s a reason that celebs like Oprah Winfrey and Bruce Willis call this their home away from home when staying in Philadelphia. The Rittenhouse Hotel is the #1 Hotel in Pennsylvania, as voted by Travel & Leisure Magazine, and boasts more amenities and perks than one could imagine.

For guests staying on the weekend, the hotel offers a complimePHIrittenhousehotelntary champagne reception on Friday and Saturday afternoons, with butler service and scrumptious treats that would make even the most skeptical person feel warm and welcome.

The Adolf Bieker Spa and Salon is located within the hotel and has a fantastic reputation. Employees of the spa recommend the “Aroma Glow” treatment and have absolutely perfected the basic Swedish massage.

The Mary Cassatt Tea Lounge is located on the first floor and looks out onto a beautiful outdoor garden; it’s a wonderful way to spend the afternoon. The Rittenhouse even has a hopping bar, Bar 210 at Lacroix, that overlooks Rittenhouse Park and serves handcrafted cocktails and hors d’oeurves.

There’s no question – the Rittenhouse Hotel will make every stay in Philadelphia as fabulous as you would hope, with elegance and style!

The New Comcast Center is Worth the Visit

The Comcast Center is one of the newest additions to the Philadelphia sPicture 9kyline- and by far the tallest. You’ll need to allot at least ten minutes for ogling in the lobby at the gigantic video wall, 2,000 square feet of hi-def LED screen to be exact, that shows different images throughout the day of flying through space to Phillies playoff games.

The Market at Comcast Center is a great stop for lunch, and often gets busy with the suits on break during the week. Voted best food court by Philadelphia Magazine in 2009, any gourmet palate will be satiated with all of the choices. The most popular spot is Philadelphia’s famous cheese aficionados The Di Bruno Brothers. This Italian market sensation set up another shop here with scrumptious sandwiches filled with classic flavors.

LOVE Park, a plaza made famous for Robert Indiana’s LOVE sculpture, is located right outside the Comcast Center. If the weather is nice, dining al fresco is a must!

It’s Location, Location at Sir Francis Drake Hotel

Looking for classic downtown digs with an offbeat San Francisco vibe?  The Sir Francis Drake Hotel in Union Square offers luxury lounges, romantic suites, and spectacular views of the city, complete with the famous Beefeater doorman to welcome your stay.  Even if you’re not here to lodge, most everyone loves stopping to pose with the most photographed man in the city.Picture 15

Location is the draw of this hotel with the clang of San Francisco’s historic cable cars at the front door and shops like Tiffany & Co. and Hermes just around the corner.  The Financial District and Moscone Center are also within walking distance if you’re in town on business.

Should you choose to stay in for the evening, The Drake boasts two of the most popular venues in the city.  Enjoy a fine Italian/French candlelit dinner at Scala’s Bistro on the main floor, with a menu created by Bravo’s Top Chef Jen Biesty.  Then sip cocktails with San Francisco’s most famous socialite Harry Denton in The Starlight Room, a 1930’s glam lounge on top of the hotel.  It’s a sparkly, starry view from the top floor of the hotel, and you’ll thank yourself for booking your stay here.

Bartenders are Friends at Jose Pistola’s

When considering Philadelphia bars, Jose Pistola’s gets the rare A++ for its bartenders. These guys will be your friend and laugh with you all evening all whilPicture 14e still managing to be unintrusive in your own conversations. The exposed brick walls, industrial-chic feel and long curving bars are a welcome surprise to the plain view of the outside.

Philly residents know Pistola’s for its beer list, which is long, lovely and always changing. If you get a good conversation going with the bartender, they’ve been known to pull some unique brews from the back for curious customers. Highlights of the menu are the nachos, which can be split for a table and are covered in some serious queso fresco, and the melt in your mouth, take me to Mexico empanadas. Whether you’rd singing work woes away at happy hour or hitting margaritas and burritos late night, Jose Pistola’s will be a good time.

Bay Area Discovery Museum

Everyone’s talking about the museum on the west coast that makes all other children’s museums green with envy. Located at the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge, The Bay Area Discovery Museum is the only museum in a National Park and its creative exhibits are admired by other museums nationwide. Whether it’s sculpting a model of the Golden Gate Bridge (that’s right above!), examining live sea creatures in a recreated natural habitat, or watching a puppet show, the hands-on museum nurtures future generations of creative thinkers and innovators.

There are tons of exhibits at the Bay Area Discovery Museum year-round for children to discover and get creative in their own way.

Ambiance is Pretty in Pink

Picture 5Voted the best store in San Francisco nationally by Lucky Magazine and locally by The San Francisco Bay Guardian, San Francisco Magazine, and San Francisco Weekly, Ambiance San Francisco’s selection of romantic dresses and shoes has become the favorite fashion on the local streets.  With designers like Betsey Johnson, Diane von Furstenburg, Kensie, and Trina Turk, you’ll be ready for any occasion from box seats at the opera to a girl’s night out.

Ambiance doesn’t stop with dresses- they cover everything from jeans to adorable accessories to killer heels.  Your shopping experience here will be like playing little girl’s dress-up in a grown-up designer’s boudoir.

With three stores to shop ’til you drop in the Haight-Ashbury, Marina, or Noe Valley districts, you won’t walk out empty-handed.

Throwback Fun at Lucky Strike

PHIluckystrikeLucky Strike is the perfect blend between lane and lounge…and yes, we’re talking bowling lanes here. It’s easy to let your hair down and visit your inner-child at this swanky alley. Whether you’re a serious bowler or a seriously bad one, you are bound to have a blast.

Cocktail waitresses channel a retro roller-girl look while you hang with friends, dance, bowl, and pig out like you’re 13 again (loaded potato chips are a must). Make sure you remember to reserve your lane, because it gets busy as the music turns up after 10pm. And don’t be shy, no one will think twice about you shakin’ your booty while you bowl! Even if you do not go for the lanes, there’s great seating for a late-night dinner with friends or to catch the game on the big screens behind the bar.

Dress to impress, as recommended in the dress code, but make sure your outfit will match those sweet bowling shoes.

Butter: Fine Cuisine To See and Be Seen

When Butter first opened it was the hot, new restaurant, and six years later it’s still frequented by Hollywood A-listers and sophisticated New Yorkers on a nightly basis.  With three rooms, each serving a different purpose, there’s something for everyone at this restaurant and lounge.

In The Great Room, indulge in the French-inspired, American-executed food while sipping on their Wine Spectator award-winning wine list.  After dinner head downstairs to The Birch Room where you will more than likely run into an Olsen Twin or two. If downstairs gets too crazy, at Butter you have a third option. The Gallery Room, located at the entrance to Butter, is equipped with red leather seats located in a series of nooks so you can cozy up to your date and drink in privacy.

Whether you’re in the mood for fine American cuisine or to see and be seen, Butter has it all.

Start The Weekend Right At Friday LIVE

Food and drink specials? Check. Gorgeous venue? Check. Fantastic free live music? Check! The Kimmel Center’s Friday LIVE series has all that and more Friday evenings on its Commonwealth Plaza sPHIfridaylivetage (that’s in the spectacular main lobby, which is worth the visit in itself).

The Philadelphia music scene is huge, and the Kimmel Center showcases these local talents from 5:30-7:15pm every Friday throughout its season. Rock, funk, classical, straight-away jazz – you name it- they’ve got it. Friday LIVE is a great way to see this beautiful venue, built in 2001 on the Avenue of the Arts, without committing to purchasing a ticket.

The bar serves drink specials and appetizers, ideal for a happy hour visit before going out to eat at one of the many restaurants in walking distance. Supporting local arts is always a good thing, so you may as well do it in this fabulous performing arts center. If you want to check out the performances before you go, they’re all listed on the website.

Drink Like You Never Have Before

There’s something intriguing about drinking in a dark room, especially when you have to go down a spePicture 4akeasy-reminiscent stairway to do it. Barbara Lynch, grande dame of Boston culinary royalty, is well aware of this appeal.

Drink, her fairly recent endeavor into the throwback spirits craze, is tucked into the basement of 348 Congress Street, in the otherwise nighttime-sleepy Fort Point. Dark enough to be its own brand of thrilling, Drink is still laid back enough to be comfortable.

You won’t find cocktail menus at drink. Simply tell the bartenders what you’re looking for and they decide for you. And we would suggest avoiding the simple “I like gin” route.  Customers can suggest spicy or tart or even all-around surprising and the bartenders are more than happy to oblige. Go ahead–just try to stump them. And an added FYI? Make sure to try the Trinidad Sour. Check out the website at drinkfortpoint.com.

DC’s Only Pre-Revolutionary Home: The Old Stone House and Garden

Picture 58Washington, D.C. may be named after America’s Revolutionary War Hero, but there’s only one building remaining from that period: The Old Stone House & Garden. Known as the last Pre-Revolutionary building standing in Washington, D.C. on its original foundation, this house has been a part of American history since the beginning.

In fact, part of the reason the house was preserved was due to local legend. According to the folklore, the architect of D.C., Pierre L’Enfant, stayed in the house while he was designing our nation’s capital. Although the legend proved to be false, it has still made a mark on the city.

Today, the house is host to a museum that recreates life in the late 1700s. The house is about 85% original to its 1700’s construction, and it is furnished to reflect upper-middle class living. It even contains a grandfather clock that was originally inside the house.

If the museum is not for you, the house also has a beautiful garden outside. Containing benches and flowerbeds, the caretakers have done a great job keeping the house as it was before America was the United States.

The Bohemian Caverns: The Sole Home of Soul Jazz

After closing for decades, this hotspot for live cool jazz is back and better Picture 14than ever.  The Boehmian Caverns is the self-proclaimed sole home of soul jazz, and by boasting legends like Bill Cosby and Billy Holiday, we believe them.

When stepping into the basement lounge it feels more like a bat cave than a smoky, stereotypical jazz lounge, but that’s what makes this place unique. The petrified wood tables and sparkly quartz covered walls make you feel like you are literally and metaphorically about to listen to cool, never been heard, underground music.  There’s a different band playing almost every night, but each of them are of the highest quality when it comes to proper jazz music. Before the show, grab some grub named after some legends like John Coltrane and Billie Holiday.

The Chateau Tivoli, A Star-Studded B&B

SFchateauJust two blocks north of Alamo Square’s famous “Painted Ladies” lies an equal beauty: The Chateau Tivoli. It charmed the likes of Mark Twain and Luisa Tetrazzini back in the day and continues to be a favorite among the elite. As elegant on the outside as it is on the inside, this landmark bed and breakfast will make you re-think this genre of accommodation.

For the modern guest, you’ll find a gracious wine and cheese reception in an old-fashioned music parlor. They even serve a classy champagne brunch on weekends. Antique furniture lavishes each suite from the likes of the Vanderbilt, Charles DeGaulle, and J. Paul Getty estates, that are named after famous opera singers and dancers who frequented the mansion.

If you’re looking to grab one of the nine room suites, you may be sharing the roof with some famous mansion-mates. Many a famous band member, talk show host, and actor have stayed at the Chateau Tivoli, keeping a low profile away from bustling downtown, while maintaining their sophisticated lifestyle.

Dallas Does Art… Finally!

DSC00913adjustedThe long anticipated and well publicized Dallas Arts District is finally open! As one of the largest- if not THE largest- urban arts districts in the nation, it has put the Big D on the map as a major player in the art scene. The new Dallas Arts District in downtown Dallas is a sprawling 68-acre, 19-block area of performing and visual art utopia that brings an imaginative world of art this city has craved for for decades.

Incorporating over a dozen venues, the Dallas Arts District crosses all genres and functions to create a city within a city. From One Arts Plaza, where you’ll find a dynamic mix of corporate, residential, and retail space featuring some of Dallas’ hippest restaurants and bars to the Nasher Sculpture Center, highly regarded as one of the foremost collections of modern and contemporary sculptures in the world to the internationally renowned Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center, where some of the world’s finest acts have performed. With a massive collection of new and old, classic and modern, the buildings themselves are masterful works of art.

And don’t forget the new ‘kids’ on the art block, the Margot & Bill Winspear Opera House and the Dee & Charles Wyly Theater, as they don’t mess around… unless, of course, it’s comedy.

MACC: So Much Art in So Few Words

With the Wolf Theatre Academy, Singer Gallery, Art Academy, DePicture 21nver Children’s Theatre, and the Jewish Film Festival all under its belt, The Mizel Arts & Culture Center, or MACC, is one of the Rocky Mountain’s premier arts organizations.

Located on the campus of the Robert E. Loup Jewish Community Center, the Center’s mission is to draw attention to the many artistic achievements of the Jewish community as well as the Denver  community at large.

Each one of its many arms is prized performance venue that features high quality and new work from the area. There’s always a new show or new exhibit that’s completely unique to Denver going on at the MACC.

LA’s “Original” Farmers Market

Picture 22“Meet me at Third and Fairfax” is a phrase synonymous with the culinary elite and West Coast foodies. Since its conception 75 years ago, the Los Angeles Farmer’s Market is one of the most popular and highly trafficked markets of its kind. So popular, it is now considered a Los Angeles historic landmark.

Starting off with just a handful of vendors, the market has grown to mammoth proportions. It boasts 100 longstanding restaurants (even Starbucks has gotten in on the action) as well as eclectic and small farmers and grocers who sell everything from ingredients to homemade enchiladas. The Farmers Market has grown in size as well as diversity. There are many shops and specialty stores scattered throughout the ever-expanding corner.

Insider’s Tip: Make a day of it with a short trolley ride to The Grove or to CBS Television City.

Authentic Philly Favorites from Campo’s Deli

Located conveniently in Old City, Campo’s Deli is one of the best places for all those infamous, gut-busting Philly food favorites. Specializing in authentic cheesesteaks and hoagies (don’t you even try and order a hero or a sub in this joint), Campo’s has been serving the city since 1947 when it was opened by Ambrose and Rose Campo as a grocery store and luncheonette.

For Campo-virgins, go with the classics: Campo’s Italian Special Hoagie with Dilusso Salami, Ham Capacollo, Peppered Ham, Pepperoni, Prosciutto, Provolone; and a Classic Cheesesteak (wiz wit’ if you like onions). Other menu all-stars are the Caprese Sandwich with Fresh Mozzarella, Tomatoes, Prosciutto, Sweet Roasted Peppers and Basil Vinaigrette Drizzle, or the Heater – a spicy cheesesteak with Jalapeno Cheddar and Buffalo Hot Sauce (you can get this killer sandwich at Phillies games, too).

If when you return home and your heart still aches for some beefy-cheesy delight, have no fear – just go on their website and order up from the shipping menu.

Tony Award-Winning Alliance Theatre

Now in its 39th season, Atlanta’s nationally acclaimed Alliance Theatre, recipient of the 2007 Regional Theatre Tony Award®, is the leading professional resident theatre of the Southeast.

Under the leadership of Artistic Director Susan V. Booth and Managing Director Thomas Pechar, the Alliance Theatre is a national theatre with a local address, reachiPicture 54ng out annually to almost 200,000 patrons and members of the community. Known for its high artistic standards and national role in creating significant theatrical works, the Alliance launched three Tony Award-winning hits to Broadway: Alice Walker’s The Color Purple, Elton John and Tim Rice’s Aida and Alfred Uhry’s The Last Night of Ballyhoo. And in a rare event for a regional theatre, it originated the national tour of the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.

The theatre has premiered more than 50 works including adaptations of Carson McCullers’ The Heart is a Lonely Hunter and Pearl Cleage’s Blues for an Alabama Sky. Further evidence of the Alliance’s commitment to new work is found in its nationally recognized Kendeda Graduate Playwriting Competition, a cutting-edge program introducing student playwrights to professional networks while producing the world premiere of the winning student’s work. The Alliance Theatre also offers extensive education and outreach programs such as the Institute for Educators and the Collision Project for high school students. The Alliance continuously brings Atlanta the finest talent and finest art—proving once again that the Alliance is where great theatre lives.

The Alliance Theatre is a division of the Woodruff Arts Center in Atlanta, Georgia, which also includes the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, High Museum of Art, Young Audiences and the 14th Street Playhouse.

John Gidding Loves It To Pieces

johngidding

When designer John Gidding from HGTV’s “Designed to Sell” recommends a furniture store, you know it’s something special. Pieces in Atlanta is a one-of-a-kind store that garners major attention from Atlanta-based, design television stars and national press alike.

Why does one shop receive so much praise? It’s because of owner and refurbishing queen Lee Kleinhelter.

Pieces is adorably designed where each room is a color-based vignette showing off Kleinhelter’s one-of-a-kind gems that are refurbished using her own hands. From pillows to wooden tables to antique chairs, Kleinhelter literally turns someone’s “trash” into absolute treasure.

While the antique and unique furniture tends to be pricey, you can get a completely unique accessory item for less than fifty bucks. The style is classic with a punch and the clean lines resonate well with buyers, landing Pieces in Lucky Magazine, Elle Décor, and even in the Best of Atlanta Magazine’s Hall of Fame.

When it comes to the home, John Gidding knows best with his amazing recommendation of Pieces.

Tracy Hutson Dive-ing Into Grapevine

tracyhutsonOn the surface a dive bar may seem an unusual nightlife favorite for television star and stylist/designer Tracy Hutson, but then you wouldn’t understand the charm of neighborhood hotspot Grapevine.

Sure, Grapevine has a killer rooftop with views of the Dallas skyline, but then everything gets curiously odd from there. For starters, it has a basketball court. The clientele is everyone from yuppie lawyers to the local gay and lesbian crowd. It has mismatched glassware that is purchased bi-weekly from the local Goodwill.

And without any mass advertising, except word-of-mouth through the grapevine, this place is packed to the brim every night.

Grapevine says, “Our customers are like our glasses; they’re all different!” And that’s exactly why Tracy Hutson, and nightlife critics from AOL to Dallas.com, loves this bar. Tracy Hutson has a lot in common with Grapevine. She blends her philanthropic nature with eclectic design from her ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” job to her Dallas nightlife spot. And she always has fun doing both!

**Tracy Hutson is a native Texan and style consultant on ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, author of Feathering the Nest: Tracy Hutson’s Eco-friendly Guide to Decorating Your Baby’s Room, and founder of Tracy Hutson Designs.

Old City, New Flair

Picture 17By day, Old City is Philadelphia’s art hub with its many galleries and show rooms. By night, it becomes the center of the city’s nightlife as party hoppers jump from pub to bar to club along the narrow streets.

From handbags to furniture, everything can be found here. Get a new ‘do at Chroma and an edgy, stylish outfit at Reward, and you’re ready for a night on the town- or maybe just cocktails at Bleu, one of the city’s hippest hangouts. And don’t forget to visit the Liberty Bell Center as your visit to Old City- and Philly in general- would not be complete without it.

This historic district gets particularly crowded on weekends, as it’s one of the prettiest neighborhoods in the city.

Martinis & IMAX

A good thing should never go away, so make sure to savor the last month of Martinis & IMAX at the Fernbank Museum of Natural History before it goes into history. There are only four Fridays left to enjoy live music, martinis, a wine bar, dinner selection, and of course, an IMAX movie.

Gandhi & Presley Sought Serenity at the Self-Realization Center

Picture 8Serenity at the Self-Realization Center is an understatment. Many of the world’s most influential people loved this place; Elvis Presley made it a point to visit often, Beatle George Harrison had his memorial services here and it’s one of the few places in the world where you can actually visit the ashes of Mahatma Gandhi.

The secret to the Center is how it creates a spiritual and physical utopia for its visitors. The gardens and natural spring lake are home to many different plants and animals, including swans, ducks, koi and lotus flowers. With a beautiful rose garden surrounded by small monuments to the major religions- Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam and Judaism- it’s a haven for free thinkers and the spiritual alike.  A visit to the temple, a walk through the peaceful garden, and maybe a chance for some contemplative meditation, is a wonderful way to get out of the city without ever leaving

Be Silly like the Scientist at the Albert Einstein Memorial

With his infamous disheveled hair and stuck out tongue, the Albert Einstein Memorial is fitting for the scientist who could be silly at times. The giant bronze Einstein is situated outside the National Academy of Science where anyone, big or small, can get up and climb on the lap of the genius.

The statue stands 12-feet tall and shows off the genius’s three best-known theories: the photoelectric effect, the theory of general relativity, and  equivalence of energy and matter. It’s a must-visit for a cute photo for you and your baby Einsteins.

The DC Arts Center Where Talented Artists Get Their Start

When the phrase up and coming artists is used, it is usually meant Picture 6for musicians, but the DC Arts Center, or DCAC, is dedicated to upcoming artists in all forms of art. One part theater, one part art gallery, the DCAC was built as an alternative center for local artists and has turned into a stepping stone for young talent to get noticed in the naton’s capital.

Over 100 visual art exhibitions and 500 performances have taken place at the DC Arts Center. The center has been reviewed on the local, national, and international level, making this an important venue for both the art world and the artists showcasing their work.

Where SNL Stars are Born: Upright Citizens Brigade

uprightcitizensBefore Amy Poehler was Baby Mama and a SNL star, she was one of the four founders of Upright Citizens Brigade, one of the premiere improvisation theaters in the country.  UCB is known for its long form improvisation and the 152-seat, intimate basement theater. It is so intimate that you can literally see the sweat on the performers’ faces during the scenes. The talent ranges from familiar faces you may have seen on Madtv and 30 Rock to advanced students showing off their comedic timing on stage.

Make sure to book tickets in advance and if you plan on going to the famously free Sunday show, be prepared for a long wait. This is a casual affair with fold up chairs and an intermission filled with cheaply priced beer and wine, but that’s the way comedy should be: gritty and real.

Discover the Woman Behind the Flag and Star-Spangled Banner

Ever wonder Picture 31how the American flag came to be? At the Star-Spangled Banner Flag House, discover the woman behind the most powerful symbol in the world. Located in the former house of Mary Pickersgill, who sewed the national flag that also inspired our national anthem, this museum recreates the world that Mary would have lived in.

At the museum, visitors can learn about the Battle of Baltimore during the War of 1812, during which the flag and anthem were created. There are various artifacts from the era, including a fragment of the Star-Spangled Banner flag and a drum used by an American soldier during the battle. There is also a discovery gallery for kids, where they can design their own flags and fly it on the gallery’s flagpole.

The house is filled with original early 19th century objects. In fact, many of them were actual possessions of the Pickersgill family. There are also various live characters around the house that really make the experience feel authentic, from the African American apprentice Grace Wisher to Mary Pickersgill herself. If that’s not enough to recreate 19th century life for you, there are also touchable objects and various interactive activities, as well as a professionally guided tour.

Disney Meets History at Kid-Friendly Port Discovery

Who doesn’t love a little Disney? With the exhibits designed by Walt Disney Imagineering, Port Discovery ranks as one of the Top 5 Children’s Museums in the U.S. by Child Magazine and has about 250,000 visitors a year. It is home to fifteen distinct environments and exhibits, providing a very educational and interactive experience a.k.a. if you’ve got a kid, this is the place to go.

Picture 29Using the philosophy that children learn best through experiences, Port Discovery’s exhibits are very hands on and range from a Sensation Station for toddlers to a mystery house where kids try to solve a mystery using clues and evidence of an Egyptian pharaoh’s “lost” tomb. The museum also offers diverse programs, such as Healthy First Saturdays, which focuses on healthy living, and Discovery Days, which is designed for children with special needs.

This museum is only a short walk from the Inner Harbor and is definitely worth checking out.

Aptly Named Mr. Yum Brings Asia to Little Havana

This Thai/Japanese restaurant certainly doesn’t suffer for its unconventional location in the heart of Little Havana. With a chic interior- stark white tables against crimson walls- and a buzzing, hip clientele, Mr. Yum is known for providing great service and delicious food. Every meal begins with a fancy amuse bouche and highlights include a special Pad Thai, Panang Curry and an incredible, creative sushi bar that’s as beautiful to look at as it is to eat.

Wild Times at the National Zoo

Picture 10Tired of people watching all day? Come to the National Zoo and animal watch instead. Open 364 days a year, this 163-acre zoo is set in the heart of D.C. With 2,000 animals of nearly 400 different species, this zoo is huge.

The National Zoo is most known for its famous residents: giant pandas Tian Tian and Mei Xiang. There are plenty of other interesting animals as well, from seals and sea lions to Asian elephants. There are also various programs happening everyday, whether it’s meeting zebras or watching a crazy octopus feeding. The zoo also offers various education programs, from the Wildlife Studies Certificate Program to children’s classes for ages two and older.

The zoo requires at least a few hours to go through all the exhibits and is exciting whether there’s snow on the ground or on a beautiful summer day. And hey, it’s not every day that you get to see an animal roaming around in Washington D.C.

Spooky, Yet Serene Cheeseman Park

Cheeseman Park is a great place to relax, take a stroll, play with the dog, or sit in the sun and enjoy the view, but beware of the restless spirits! Yes, Cheeseman Park is one of the most haunted places in Denver. Built on a cemetery, it seems the workers forgot to move some of the graves that were still buried in the historic ground when it was converted to a park. The workers then began to disrupt the bodies in such a way that the undertaker proclaimed it was the “Work of Ghouls!” to a local paper.  Since then it’s been known as one of the haunted places in Denver.

But if ghosts are not you’re thing, head over to the eastern border where the picturesque Denver Botanic Gardens has made a home.

Strathmore’s Elegant Acoustics and Diverse Artists

Picture 23Rolling hills in an intimate, park-like setting. If this sounds like the description of an outdoor concert, you’re wrong. This is actually what the architects of the new Strathmore Music Center tried to recreate, and they have succeeded in creating an artistic haven for musicians, dancers and every other kind of artist.

With 1,976 seats wrapping around the stage under the undulating roof and curving balconies, the concert hall is beautiful and elegant. It’s not just about looks either. There are 43 individually controlled acoustical reflector panels as well as a ceiling that slopes upward from the stage, allowing for rich and full acoustics for any kind of performance. And these aren’t just any kind of performances.

Having hosted many famous artists, from Yo-Yo Ma to Wilco, the Music Center is also home to the famous Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. The Strathmore presents affordable and accessible artistic performances all year-round. There are also more intimate performances, as well as art exhibits and lectures, at the 100-seat Strathmore Mansion (located next to the Music Center), which can be rented for weddings and other events.

It may be in Maryland, but the Strathmore Theatre is just minutes from the Beltway. For an amazing artistic experience, this is the place to go.

The Empire Observatory’s Secret

EmpireStateBuildingAs the tallest building in New York City, you can’t help but be entranced by the Empire State Building. Yet waiting in the sometimes hours long line to see its famous view can ruin any source of awe one was expecting to feel.

We’ve got the solution to your tourist problems.

Go at night.

The ESB Observatory has hours fit for the City That Never Sleeps. It’s open until 2am.

Once the sun sets, it’s like a whole new world up there. Instead of families and tourists clamoring to get the best skyline shot (is there even one?), the crowd turns to New Yorkers and couples. The wait to get up to the top is slim to none and it’s quiet and spacious enough to feel like you’re on top of the world- alone.

Yes, the ESB Observatory is as incredible and romantic as it sounds.

Rita Hazan: Color Knows No Better

RitaHazanWhen Oprah features you- twice- and Jessica Simpson cheats on the colorist she made famous to be in your hands, you must be someone of high quality. You must be colorist Rita Hazan.

By her humble personality and youthful appearance, one would never know they were in the hands of a beauty master. So our correspondent was shocked to see that when Rita Hazan starts to foil it’s as if a kung-fu ninja has emerged. Rita uses a special folding technique, almost like the FlipFold, that allows the time-consuming process to go remarkably fast with each foil being of the same size.

While this may seem like an accomplishment in itself, it’s the mixture she uses in the back that is true genius. Rita takes time to listen to her clients and hear what they cannot express themselves, ending with results that near perfection. And the color lasts nearly forever in hair terms; the only reason to touch one’s hair after emerging from the salon is to touch up the roots, but never the color.

To add to the experience, make sure to get the special protein hair treatment that leaves even the most butchered of blondes absolutely shiny.

So, sure, stylists get all the credit for the “perfect” cut, but anyone who dyes their hair knows that finding the “perfect” color is nearly impossible. From personal experience, we know Rita Hazan makes the impossible perfectly possible.

Take it Slow at Theodore Roosevelt Island

Whether you’d like to take a run or enjoy the picturesque scenery and touching memorial, the Theodore Roosevelt Island is a beautiful place to visit. Located in the middle of the Potomac River, the island was re-named and made a national memorial to commemorate the heroic 26th U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt. Enjoy the scenic beauty of this island, but make sure to bring your walking shoes. The only way to access the island is through a footbridge from Arlington, Virginia and no cars or bicycles are allowed.

Legends Live On at Hollywood Forever Cemetery

Picture 19As star-studded as Hollywood itself, the Hollywood Forever Cemetery has been the final resting place for the stars of the silver screen since the beginning of the movie era. Thousands come each year to see pin-up Jayne Mansfield, Carl “Alfalfa” Switzer and legendary film director Cecil B. DeMille’s tombstones. As the “resting place of Hollywood’s immortals,” this is a unique mix of both the living and the not soon to be forgotten: the cemetery is a historic landmark that shares half of its lot with Paramount Studios.

The Hollywood Forever Cemetery offers a myriad of walking tours.  The Hidden Hollywood Tour uncover the lost stars’ resting places, like Birth of Nation’s Henry B. Walthall; The Jewish Heritage Tour explores the lives and contributions of many of its Jewish persons; the tours would not be complete without The Cemetery of the Stars Tour that shows the A-list of the interred people.

The Hollywood Forever Cemetery is also host to many events year round, like the “Dia De Los Muertos” festival, that is one of the biggest of its kind. Sure, it may be a little morbid, but they don’t call it Hollywierd for nothing!

Anna Wintour’s Secret Street

anna-wintourOne would expect fashion legend Anna Wintour’s favorite New York street to be as glamorous as Vogue’s cover pages, but it is a street so small and hidden it’s only a lane.

Minetta Lane is one of the most tranquil and charming streets in the City. Boasting only a block of real estate, it doesn’t even house one store. Instead it has the beautiful Minetta Lane Theater complete with a balcony that shows off-Broadway plays.

Minetta Lane is in the heart of Greenwich Village, with bustling Sixth Avenue to its west and NYU bar-ridden MacDougal Street to its east. But you would never know how populated the area is when walking down this street, and that’s why New Yorkers love it. Walking down this lane is like going back in time, with some of the original 1800 buildings still standing proudly. The peace and quiet is an amazing escape from the hustle and bustle of New York without every leaving its heart.

***Anna Wintour is the legendary editor-in-chief and fashion icon of American Vogue Magazine. Ms. Wintour is widely regarded as one of the most powerful people in fashion by heavily influencing trends and emerging designers’ careers. Beyond the pages, Anna Wintour has been the muse of major motion pictures including starring in “The September Issue” and has been named “The Mayoress of New York” by The Guardian publication.

Isaac Mizrahi’s Radio City Inspiration

Issac Mizrahi is a fashion designer with a fabulously loud personality, but his “most inspiring place” in New York is a traditional staple of New York culture: Radio City Music Hall.  Thousands will flock to its doors in the upcoming months for the world famous Rockettes and the Christmas Spectacular show, but Mizrahi thinks the architecture says it all. Mirazhi says Radio City, not some other famous New York skyscraper, epitomizes the 1930’s art deco architecture and its beauty is truly inspiring. But Mizrahi does love a good Rockette show like the rest of us, having once been in talks to design their costumes!

** Isaac Mizrahi the Chief Director of Liz Claiborne and television host of Bravo’s “The Fashion Show.” Mizrahi has been awarded 4 prestigious CFDA fashion awards and is credited for revolutionizing the fashion industry with his partnership with Target. Beyond fashion, Mizrahi is an accomplished author, performed in a one-man, off-Broadway production, and has appeared in motion pictures and television shows including “Sex & the City.” Mirazhi was born in Brooklyn and resides near Washington Square Park.

Eric Fischl & The New Gen of Odeon Artists

It makes perfect sense that artist Eric Fischl’s favorite restaurant is The Odeon Restaurant. The Odeon is the grandfather of the hot culinary scene that is TriBeCa today. It was the first to arrive on the scene, before TriBeCa got its moniker for being the Triangle-Below-Canal, and attractedPicture 8 the who’s who of the art world, including Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat. The Odeon is known for its brasserie fare including the country frisee salad, trouffled poached eggs and sautéed cod.

At night, especially on warm summer evenings, the restaurant’s terrace sports the beautiful and fabulous of New York sipping martinis and cocktails.  And Eric Fischl’s keeps the Odeon’s artist attraction alive today with his frequent visits to this American brasserie pioneer.

** Eric Fischl is an artist and sculptor and native New Yorker. Fischl’s works have been featured at The Whitney Museum and sculptures in Rockefeller Center.

Mizuo Peck is INA Love

Film star and native New Yorker Mizuo Peck loves to shop at one of New York’s coolest insider stores, INA.

INA describes itself as “New York’s best and most established designer consignment store,”Picture 13 and it’s very hard to prove them wrong.

Opening their flagship in 1994, they are now five stores strong in some of Manhattan’s most prized shopping real estate: NoHo, SoHo, Nolita, and Uptown.

INA is not your average consignment store where one most purge through racks of outdated and moth-ball smelling clothes to find the designer gem in the pile, it instead chooses the best of the best in fashion of yesterday and today. INA consistently fills its racks with beautiful, well-maintained, and luxurious items at discounted prices that make both fashionistas and recessionistas come back for more. They have everything from barely used Chanel wallets to Christian Louboutin heels to Tory Burch skirts. Some items are truly vintage while others are simply last season’s castaways, but all are absolutely devine.

And if this store doesn’t seem like it could get any better, it also has an amazing blog that keeps you up to date on new inventory, sale items, and INA employee’s picks for all its stores.

INA consignment stores are a shopper’s dream and unlike most “chains”, every INA store is completely unique from each other and from each day.

**Mizuo Peck is most famous for her role as Sacajawea in both “Night at the Museum” films starring Ben Stiller. Peck has worked closely with respected photographer Bruce Weber for the cover of L’uomo Vogue and appeared with Angelina Jolie in the Rolling Stones’ music video, “Anybody Seen My Baby?” Peck, a native New Yorker, still lives a block from her childhood TriBeCa home.

This extraordinary park is home to a number of museums, stables, mansions, boathouses, and historical buildings such as the Bellaire Manor with its floor to ceiling wood paneling that would make any art historian’s mouth water. New Deck Tavern Pours the Best Pint in Philly

Here the beer flows, the crowds are loud, and the atmosphere is just right!

There’s no better placPicture 11e than New Deck Tavern to grab a cold pint and a Philly, cheese steak that is, with friends after a hard day’s work. Although the grub’s unbeatable, the happy hour is what’s got people coming back for more. They’re proud to pour the best pint in the city, thanks to their European Draft System imported straight from Country Cork.

Enid A. Haupt Garden’s Unexpected Break From City Life

There’s only one spot in DC where you can travel to China, Philadelphia and the 19th century all while on a rooftop. This break from city life can be had at the exquisite Enid A. Haupt Garden, filled with brick paths taking you to elaborate flowerbeds and exotic plants. Named after its donor, a noted supporter of horticulture, this garden offers something for everyone, from the avid horticulturist to someone just looking to relax.

With plant-filled urns, water fouPicture 57ntains and baskets hanging from reproduction 19th-century lampposts, the four-acre garden is actually located on the roofs of the National Museum of African Art, the Arthur M. Sackley Gallery and S. Dillon Ripley Center. Make sure to visit the Haupt Parterre that’s inspired by the design from the 1876 Centennial Exposition’s Horticultural Hall.

Also, make your way to the Moongate Garden (part of the Haupt Garden), inspired by the gardens and architecture of the Temple of Heaven in Beijing, China. Inside, there is a circular pool made out of granite that’s next to nine-feet tall pink granite moon gates.

Tours are offered every Wednesday during the summer. For those who just want to sit and relax, there are plenty of benches as well as Wi-Fi access throughout the garden.

North Third is First in NoLibs

Northern Liberties is filled with quirky bars with attitude, and North Third is no different. The menu features bar food favorites that have a wonderful reputation around town. If you’re friendly with a football team (or, just a cute blonde with an empty stomach), order “Pound your Wings” with North Third’s Famous Sauce or Asian Style – 1 pound of wings for $7 and 2 pounds for $11 can accommodate any budget. N3 is still known for its burger after all these years, too – 8 ounces of Black Angus with your choice of cheese.

The beer list is long and will put any fermentation-lover swooning. The margaritas and sangria also come in pitchers or carafes, which is perfect for the outdoor seating with friends in the summer. And we are slowly learning that in Philly you’re nothing if you’re not serving up a stellar belly-bombing brunch. N3 can check that one off the list too – omelets for the masses and pseudo breakfasts of champions like eggs and chili over cornbread with sides of potatoes and pico de gallo.

DC’s Morning Must: The Bean Counter

The Bean Counter is a friendly neighborhood spot for more than just a cup-a-joe.  It’s open for breakfast and lunch and is famous for its Cuban Sandwich. At breakfast you can find, Huevos Rancheros stuffed English muffins, a Peanut-Butter-and-Nutella sandwich, and more. The owner’s wife bakes up cholesterol-conscious brownies made with olive oil, oatmeal and chocolate-chip cookies made with whole-wheat flour and even dog treats for your pooch! And there’s coffee, all locally roasted from organic fair-trade beans. Colombian is the house brew, with rotating specials like Tanzanian and Ethiopian.

EcoManor

One of the most environmentally progressive homes in the country is nestled in the heart of Atlanta’s historic Buckhead neighborhood. EcoManor, set to be the first U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified residence in the Southeast, was built to inspire a change in urban design by showcasing how the latest green technologies can be incorporated into a traditionally beautiful Tudor house. Constructed by national eco-activists, Laura and Rutherford Seydel, EcoManor will serve as an educational tool for builders, architects, designers, landscapers and homeowners to promote green living, conservation and advanced residential building practices.

Closet Fever: Waxing, Vintage, & DJ’s Under One Roof

Imagine a hair salon and a vintage clothing boutique and DJ all under one roof. At Closet Fever there’s a turntable inside where hip DJ’s spin beats as clients browse through one-of-a kind bracelets, cutting edge dresses, and funky handbags galore. But if you’re looking to get your body manicured, the staff of professional beauty mavens will have you primped and pretty in no time whether it’s waxing or hairstyling. Where else can you get an outfit, complete with studs, and hair extensions all in one stop?

Escape to Rome at the Franciscan Monastery

When you think of D.C. architecture, the first thing that comes to mind is usually not a Roman style building. Yet, that’s exactly what you’ll find at the Mount St. Sepulchre Franciscan Monastery .Picture 6

This DC National Historical Monument is absolutely stunning. Stroll through the gardens and take a moment to enjoy the beautiful landscape. Undergroudn, there’s a replica of Roman catacombs, which is quite an experience in itself. There is also an archive, a library, and bones of Saint Benignus of Armagh, brought from the Italian Roman Catacombs.

The Byzantine style church was designed by the Roman architect Aristide Leonori and built in 1898. Around the church is the Rosary Portico, with 15 chapels commemorating Jesus and Mary. The monastery grounds contain replicas of shrines in the Holy Land, as well as a greenhouse. The Franciscan Monastery is definitely a unique landmark in the middle of the nation’s capital.

Intimate Entertainment at Joe’s Pub

Picture 25An arm of NYC’s venerable Public Theater, Joe’s Pub is actually a luxurious lounge and cabaret space offering an intimate space to experience some of the best jazz, comedy and up-and-coming musical acts. It’s one of the few places in New York you’ll find major stars without the drama involved in getting in and getting a good spot.

Performers who have hit Joe’s Pub’s stage include Tony award-winning Sutton Foster, Isaac Mizrahi (yes- the designer/comedian for a night), Grammy award winning Adele,  international signing star Lara Fabian, and the list goes on and on. Newsweek described this as “one of the country’s best small stages” and every night the quality of performances and quality of service at the lounge seals its commendable reputation.

Funky, Trendy & a Museum? Only at New Museum

Not many buildings sport a rainbow “Hell Yes” on their facade, let alone an art museum. “New Art, New Ideas;” that’s the motto for the aptly named New Museum in the hip Lower East Side. Unlike most contemporary art galleries, the art here is so new that it includes YouTube videos(!) and art that’s a social commentary on current political hot topics like the Iraq War.

Not only is the art inside super hip and new, so is the building, that is like a modern Goliath among the aging downtown buildings. It’s actually the first art museum ever to be constructed from the ground up in downtown Manhattan.

Fitting to its artsy Bowery locale, the crowd here is more likely to be sporting Converses and Aviators than suits and ties. Before leaving, check out the seventh floor Skyroom that has a spectacular panoramic view of Manhattan from the Financial District to the Midtown skyscrapers.

More for Less at Cellar 56

Your taste buds will be enticed at this bastion of flavor. Getting its name from the 56 types of wine it carries, the obvious focus is on the vino. The large selection comes at a reasonable price with $24 per bottle being the average. And if you just want a taste? Most varieties are just $6 a glass and $3 for half a glass.

The restaurant serves tapas-style small plates like fried oysters and macaroni and cheese- all at a very reasonable three to five dollars per plate. There’s quite a variety here for you to taste at Cellar 56, from wine to fine meals.

Michael’s Pre-Theater and Power Lunches

A midtown must, Michael’s is the talk of the town when it comes to power lunches and pre-theater dinner. Financiers, CEOs, suits, and celebs rub elbows while filling up on award-winning wines and expertly executed entrees ranging from lobster to duck and scallops to steak. Contemporary art by the likes of Jasper Johns and Frank Stella deck the walls of the airy Garden Room, not that guests need to notice anything other than the famed food.

Golf to Horseback Riding at Rock Creek Park

Picture 14Located in the heart of D.C., Rock Creek Park is not your average run-of-the-mill park. There is much more to do than just your usual stroll or picnic: play 18-holes at the Rock Creek Golf Course; swing a racket at the tennis courts; rollerblade or bike; rent a kayak, canoe or even a small sailboat at the boat center.

Want something more unique? Take a horseback riding lesson on the 13 miles of wide, dirt and gravel bridle trails in the northern section of the park.

But for those who just want to relax, this national park is great for that as well. Beautiful trees, fields, wild animals (coyotes!), and the serene sights and sounds of Rock Creek make a perfect setting for a hike on one of the many paths. You can even have a cell phone tour in specific areas. Just call the number and listen to a park ranger give a two-minute narration on various aspects of the park.

Take a Ride to the Revolutionary Paul Revere House

Picture 24We’ve all known about Paul Revere and his famous Midnight Ride since we were children, and Boston is that unique city where history comes alive. With an impressive 90% of the Paul Revere House in its original condition (and downtown Boston’s oldest building), the upstairs chambers contain authentic Revere Family furnishings. DJs, Bands & Art at Lit Lounge

One part H.R. Geiger-esque gallery (the Alien designer’s art graced the walls at the opening), one part understated DJ bar and one part hype, Lit is smoking hot. Offering local artists a place to play, the lounge goes against mainstream ideals and is definitely not your average nightspot. The main attraction is the alternative glam crowd with the occasional B artists, actors and indie film stars. The gallery, frequently baring grim, nightmarish images, has limited hours, but can be seen anytime through its locked glass doors. Downstairs, in the dungeon, notable-named DJs do their thing. Created as an experimental punk music venue, this lounge is perfect for those who are tired of the typical chic bars.

Soak in the Charm of Chinatown

Picture 7Chinatown has a unique character and charm all its own. There are a number of bargain furniture stores, banks, grocery stores here. More than 50 restaurants are scattered around the area, from Vietnamese, to dim sum to sushi.

The unique architecture of buildings such as Sing Chong Building and the Bank of Canton is what really gives this community its name. Hammerstein Ballroom

Musicians from the world of pop, rock and electronica all find their home in a seemingly unconventionPicture 51al setting: A vintage opera house that can holds up to 3,000. Hidden by a conventional midtown office-building, you would never know that some of the most significant groups of our time have orchestrated blow-out events, making the Hammerstein anything but an ordinary music venue in Manhattan. The ballroom opened in 1906 as a classical opera house. Then in 1910 it turned into a variety show house… followed by a conversion into a movie palace. During the Depression, it became a Freemason’s temple, and was then abandoned in the 70’s. Now, the Hammerstein is seat-free, allowing mobs in for general admission seating/standing.

Avenue Q

Now showing off Broadway, Avenue Q is the story of Princeton, a bright-eyed college grad who comes to New York City with big dreams and a tiny bank account. He soon discovers that the only neighborhood in his price range is Avenue Q; still, the neighbors seem nice. Together, Princeton and his newfound friends struggle to find jobs, dates, and their ever-elusive purpose in life. Adults love Avenue Q, but they seem a little, er, fuzzy on whether it’s appropriate for kids. We’ll try to clear that up. Avenue Q is great for teenagers because it’s about real life. It may not be appropriate for young children because Avenue Q addresses issues like sex, drinking, and surfing the web for porn. It’s hard to say what exact age is right and parents should use their discretion based on the maturity level of their children. But we promise you this: If you do bring your teenagers to Avenue Q, they’ll think you’re really cool.

The Grand & Fabulous Fox Theater

Picture 20The Fox Theatre is one of the world’s greatest venues for film and the performing arts. When it opened in the 1920’s, it was described as an outlandish, opulent and grandiose monument to excess. The Atlanta Journal description was a kinder picturesque and almost disturbing grandeur beyond imagination.

A mosque like structure, complete with minorities, onion domes and an interior décor of Egyptian grandeur, seated 4,000 people. The interior restored lovingly by the people of Atlanta is a masterpiece. Complete with an indoor Arabian court, it has a sky of flickering stars, spectacular striped canopy overhanging the balconies. The Fox reigns today as a fiercely protected landmark and internationally acclaimed theatre, celebrating more than half a century of film and theatrical productions.

From summer film festivals to Broadway shows, the Fox still generates millions of dollars to the Atlanta economy. You can tour the Fox on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 10am and Saturdays at 10 and 11am.
