The Masterpiece That Is The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum

The Guggenheim Museum is one of the most prized buildings and museums in New York City, and is often considered a masterpiece inside and out. Filling the famous rotunda halls with its highly-acclaimed contemporary art permanent collection and exhibitions, the Guggenheim always offers a unique and interactive experience to art.

Picture 25The Guggenheim Museum was integrated during the first half of the 20th century from several private collections. These private collections were so wonderfully different from each other that visitors have the opportunity to enjoy an enormous range of pieces from various historical as well as artistic periods: Mapplethorpe’s 200 finest photographs and objects, the Bohen Foundation’s room-sized film/video art works, and there’s an entire gallery dedicated to Kandinsky. The museum’s diverse and brilliant works reflect the course of modern art from the mid 1800’s to the present day via sculptures to light shows to paintings.

The Guggenheim is now celebrating its fiftieth anniversary in the landmark Frank Lloyd Wright building, with many groundbreaking anniversaries and exhibitions to come.

Newbury’s Stephanie Sokolove Unwinds at Bella Santé Spa

Stephanie’s on Newbury restaurant is as iconic as ritzy Newbury Street itself, and when namesake owner Stephanie Sokolove is not enjoying her award-winning patio and sophisticated comfort food, she goes to fellow Newbury Street business Bella Santé Spa.

Brass Monkey: A Real Bar in the Middle of Meatpacking

There are many bars and clubs in Meatpacking, but finding one that’s “normal” very hard. Meet Brass Monkey, a classic watch-the-game-on-big-screens-beer-and-shots type of place. Picture Brass Monkey

Since opening in the trendy district in 2004 (a lifetime in Meatpacking years), the bar has become a neighborhood favorite. Its open brick walls and rich wood interior creates a friendly and warm atmosphere to watch sports or just hang out. It has one of the most extensive beer lists in the city, with more than fifteen draught beers on tap and over 75 imported beers, ranging from Chimay to Stella Artois to Hoegaarden.

Despite its laid back vibe, that doesn’t mean Brass Monkey falls through the cracks. It has received rave reviews from the likes of the New York Times and celebrity appearances from A-listers Glenn Close to MTV’s The City cameos. In the summer, make sure to check out the killer rooftop deck with incredible views of the Hudson and the Highline.

Brooklyn Academy of Music Gives Art With A Bam!

Picture BAMCommonly known as BAM, this leading arts venue does just that. With a Fort Greene district named after it, the Brooklyn Academy of Music is compromised of various venue that are more avant-garde and unique than the next. It’s the oldest continuously running performance art center that just keeps getting stronger, in 2008 it had a record-breaking attendance of 550,000!

The main building contains its major venue, the Howard Gilman Opera House. The theater, designed by the famous theater-architect company Herts &Tallant, contains 2,109 seats under its soaring ceiling and has seen legendary performances by Enrico Caruso and Vanessa Redgrave. BAM’s Harvey Theater, located a few streets away, is smaller and offers a different, more intimate experience, having originally been a traditional playhouse housing Shakespearean revivals, vaudeville reviews, and musicals. BAM also organizes multiple festivals, from DanceAfrica to BAMcinemaFEST, art exhibitions, and educational programs.

Another Starr: Butcher & Singer

Channeling a time when martinis at lunch were the norm and no self-respecting woman left the home without her coif in full pompadour, Butcher & Singer serves steak and seafood in Picture 14high fashion. If you are one of those that agree there can never be too much Mad Men in our lives, Butcher & Singer is your opportunity to walk right onto that set and light up a cigarette.

The stars at this Starr restaurant are steaks and seafood, just as any classic steakhouse should. Prime steaks are prepared a la carte from the beautiful open kitchen. Seafood highlights are cold-water lobster, classic surf and turf, freshly caught fish and Lobster Newberg. And for lunch, the Butcher Burger has won Philadelphia battles with its grilled onions, English cheddar, and homemade Russian dressing serving the knockout punch.

French Charm in the Heart of Union Square at Petit Auberge

Like a French B&B you might discover Picture 8down a back alley in Paris, Petit Auberge’s tucked away, downtown location is convenient for all the sightseeing San Francisco has to offer all while acting as a peaceful escape from the high-traffic city scene.  Anyone who’s ever gone out for a day of sightseeing in San Francisco knows that it’s also like spending a full day with Jillian Michaels; the hills and excitement will surely leave you exhausted, and you’ll look forward to the crackling fire, wine and hors d’evoures that await you back at Petit Auberge.

The Non-Denominational National Cathedral’s Rich History

The most interesting thing about D.C.’s National Cathedral is not its beautiful windows or architecture, but its rich history that dates back to America’s first president and stays relevant to today’s biggest moments.

Picture 140The idea of a non-denominational cathedral that was equally open to all was first conceived in 1791 by Major Pierre l’Enfant, who was commissioned by President George Washington. But it would have to wait until 1907, under Theodore Roosevelt’s presidency, to come to fruition.

The first services were held in 1912 and the Cathedral was quickly accepted as a place for services of national focus, and services have been held daily since its opening. Memorable services include the dedication of Woodrow Wilson’s tomb in 1956, Dr. Martin Luther King’s 1968 sermon (which would be his last), and the National Prayer and Remembrance service on September 14th, 2001.

Visit the National Cathedral and experience a piece of the history of Washington D.C. On Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons visitors can enjoy tea, scones and tarts on the 7th floor of the West Tower. With a great view, it’s a nice way to stop and take it all in.

Exotic Locales Call for Calypso Styling

Picture 8With a full name like “Calypso St. Barth,” this store that has become a global brand lives up to its namesake posh inspirations. After walking away with any of its beautiful clothing, it’s impossible not to look like the luxurious, mystical sea nymph. Specializing in boho chic, flowy beach wear, Calypso has all your vacation (a.k.a. Hamptons) styling needs.

Calypso started in the tiny Caribbean island of St. Barth with a focus on women destined for exotic locations like Rajastan, Marrakesh and Bali. Calypso has become most famous for its beaded caftans, colorful tunics and stunning silk dresses that perfectly compliment the finer destinations in the world. But this store completes the look with beach complimentary thong sandals, wedges, long, golden necklaces, leather bangles, large sunhats, and no fancy traveler would be complete without the pink leather European Destination Guide. The look is the perfect, unintentional chic styling that can take you straight from the beach to a seaside five-star brunch.

For those who need the perfect outfit for a weekend in the Hamptons, winter getaway to St. Barth’s or even casual wear for the warm New York City summers, Calypso is the go-to place for the posh beachanistas.

Biennial and Beyond at The Whitney

Many museums claim to be one of the leading institutions of art, but very rarely can one stake claim as the preeminent museum, but so is the case at the Whitney. Its specialty? Americana, baby. With installations, sculptures, photography, paintings, and film starring Jasper Johns, Andy Warhol, and up and coming designers, The Whitney is known for its innovative collections and is one of the most beloved museums by in-the-know New Yorkers.

It’s fitting that the highly regarded American art museum has an equally fabulous American heritage. The Whitney was started by none other than American royalty, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney. The sculptor/socialite found it nearly impossible for emerging artists to find an exhibition space, so in 1931, The Whitney Museum of American Art was born.

Its most famous exhibition is the annual Whitney Biennial from February to May; it’s become so popular that it’s now regarded as one of the leading art exhibitions in the entire world. Focused on contemporary art, The Biennial stays true to the Whitney’s foundations and is a grand debut for many emerging artists and an incredible showcase for the more famous ones. The Biennial is in its 75th year and is getting more diverse and innovative with age.

For those wanting a great taste of American art that’s surprising, thought-provoking and beautiful in the same breath, there truly is no better place in the world than The Whitney.

Lizard Lounge Sizzles at Night

Sure, a name like LizPicture 9ard Lounge may not scream “really cool hotspot” that hosts some of the hottest parties and best DJs from around the world every week, but that’s exactly what this Dallas nightclub is all about. From record releases to themed parties to international DJs, Lizard Lounge is the place to go to dance to some of the best mixes in Texas.

Known for harboring electronica talent, Lizard Lounge also gives up-and-coming Dallas spinners a chance to show their stuff- and usually with great reviews. Channeling Lizard Lounge’s inner Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, on Thursday and Sunday Lizard Lounge transforms into Hyde-ish “The Church,” a Neo Gothic, Industrial and Electro party. It sounds crazy, and yes, it is absolutely nuts.

Revisit Retro at The Continental Mid-town

Picture 41You’ll want that martini shaken, not stirred, at this swanky lounge. In the three-story chic Continental Mid-town (that’s also home to a famous Stephen Starr restaurant), enjoy the velvet booths in the retro lounge, or take in the view from the rooftop patio.

Step up to the unique bar constructed of rubber Pirelli flooring to order a mouth watering Buzz Aldrin that’s tang, peach vodka and triple sec; or perhaps a classic Dean Martini of Ketel One Vodka and an olive (a.k.a. Chelsea Handler’s signature drink).

Hungry? No problem! Munch on a divine bar menu including calamari salad, lobster mashed potatoes, and seared ahi tuna.

In for a Swanky Night at Bimbo’s 365 Club

Picture 36With nightclubs, jazz venues, bars, and its own Vegas-style light show, North Beach is where San Franciscans have always gone to party.  And in the heart of this “Little Italy” lies Bimbo’s 365 Club, as much a favorite today as it was when Rita Hayworth was a high-kicking chorus line girl. Everyone who is anyone has since walked through these doors, including Chris Isaak, Robin Williams and Jill Scott.

When you walk into Bimbo’s, expect an evening of classic lounge acts, supper club entertainment and a dramatic art deco theme that is entirely reminiscent of the swankiest big band era nightspots. One of Bimbo’s famously plush events is its corporate and private parties for swanky Silicon Valley guests like Cellular One, Oracle, and Yahoo!.  The venue offers tiered seating, dramatic lighting, fine dine table settings and a dance floor next to the concert stage.

Whether you’ve been a regular for years or it’s your first time here, Bimbo’s is the classic nightspot for the upscale traveler.

Opera Company of Philadelphia Is Toast of “Opera Town”

Picture 27The Opera Company of Philadelphia, or OCP, knows Philly has always been a town dedicated to the arts, and even more so an Opera Town. Gearing up for its 35th Anniversary next season, OCP is continuing to do exciting full-length operas of traditional and new repertoire along Philadelphia’s Avenue of the Arts.

OCP performs at the beautiful Academy of Music and in the Kimmel Center’s smaller Perelman Theater, letting patrons see large-scale productions as well as more intimate shows. With a focus on developing talent, the performers in OCP’s productions are all top notch. For example, in 1980 OCP began a long-standing relationship with Luciano Pavarotti, establishing a competition that seeks out the best young voice talent.

In addition to the performances, OCP features pre-concert lectures and Opera-enrichment programs in hopes that the love of opera will carry on through the generations. The Opera also puts on a full-length opera every year with the students at Philadelphia’s renowned music school The Curtis Institute of Music.

Tuxedo Wearin’, Soprano’s Stylin’ at Acappella

Picture 11Ever wonder where those classic Italian restaurants that are always in gangster films exist? Look no further than Acappella. Featured in the first-ever Soprano’s episode, the food, service and ambiance make you feel like you are in a scene from The Godfather.

The menu is filled with authentic and traditional Northern Italian cuisine, from veal to lobster to pasta. Be sure to try the Bandiera Italiana, consisting of fettuccine with wild mushrooms, cavatelli with pesto, and green and white “hay and straw” pasta with fresh plum tomatoes and herbs. Everything is fresh, and the pastas and desserts are homemade. There are also seasonal specialties, such as wild rabbit, wild boar and buffalo meat in the fall or winter. The wine list is impressive as well, with plenty of domestic and imported wines, including specialty Italian wines.

With sixteen foot high beamed ceilings, oversized columns, brick walls, Italian tapestries, and tuxedo wearing waiters, the experience is unique and very Italian. Like the motto says, “We will make you a dish you can’t refuse!”

New Museum’s Lisa Phillips Dines at Gemma

As the director of the New Museum of Contemporary Art, Lisa Phillips knows a thing or two about the “renaissance,” as she calls it, of Bowery Street. The New Museum, is after all, at the center of that explosion of art on Bowery with its Guggenheim-esque new building that opened on December 1, 2007.

Picture 6When Lisa isn’t at the forefront of all things innovative, she heads up a few blocks on Bowery to the New Museum’s antithesis, Gemma. “This is where I spend most of my time and eat most of my meals,” Lisa told citybuzz of the East Village area.

Gemma’s an Italian restaurant that’s as rustic as you can get in ultra-modern New York City. There’s the classic thatched red wine bottles, wooden table tops and copper covered bar that evoke a feeling that Dorothy is no longer in the East Village anymore. The menu is filled with tried and true favorites like delicious wood-fired pizzas and soft gnocchi with a hearty Bolognese sauce. The easy setting and reliable food leaves diners like Lisa Phillips with the impression that, as the New York Times stated,”Gemma has an unlabored panache that makes an evening go down very easy.”

*** Lisa Phillips has been the Director of the New Museum of Contemporary Art since 1999.

All-Inclusive Atlanta Philharmonic is so Next Gen

Picture 26Less than a decade old, the Atlanta Philharmonic Orchestra’s youth represents its modern approach and audience. The volunteer, non-profit Atlanta Philharmonic Orchestra differs in that its all-inclusive members either identify with the LGBT community or are LGBT-friendly.

Conducted by Mirna Ogrizovic-Ciric, a Berry College professor who was born in Croatia but grew up in Serbia, the Atlanta Philharmonic Orchestra’s main goal is to share beautiful music that is inclusive of all. To that end, the group has delighted audiences by performing compositions from heavyweights such as Mozart, Bach, Beethoven and Haydn.

Guest soloists have been as impressive as its classical repertoire and include pianist Paolo André Gualdi, who grew up in Italy and has received great praise in Europe and the U.S., as well as Martin Gueorguiev, a cellist who earned first prize at Bulgaria’s National Competition for German and Austrian Music. When it comes to spreading beautiful music in Atlanta, the Atlanta Philharmonic Orchestra remains in a class of its own.

Bahdeebahdu, Need We Say More?

Picture 16Bahdeebahdu is an explosively imaginative studio for design and the development of art, sculpture and furnishings. Bahdeebahdu is unlike any other gallery in the area, showcasing the works of Philadelphia’s favorite “Luminary” Warren Muller. Muller creates functional lighting sculptures by following the mantra “everything is up for grabs.” Found, recycled and salvaged objects turn into light sculptures that are featured in this gallery, along with various places around the city like theatres and restaurants.

Bahdeebahdu also houses works by interior designer RJ Thornburg, Muller’s lifetime partner and self-proclaimed Fabulist. RJ has been designing for twenty-five years and has left his fun and easy-going design mark all over Philadelphia (from bakeshops to internationally renowned hotels).

Honor and Remember at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial

As a tribute to the men and women who died in the controversial Vietnam War, Maya Linn designed this memorial with a simplicity that she hoped would “allow everyone to respond and remember.”  Divided into three memorials, each one is special and evokes a powerful message.

The memorial consists of the Three Soldiers Statue, VietnamPicture 5 Women’s Memorial, and the most well known of them all, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, which lists the names of those who died as a result of the war. The latter is made of two long, black granite walls that reflect the surrounding trees, grass, and other Vietnam monuments to create a peaceful and serene atmosphere. There are 58,261 names currently inscribed in the Memorial Wall, with one wall pointing towards the Washington Memorial and the other at the Lincoln Memorial.

The Three Soldiers Statue is a bronze sculpture and was built to complement the Memorial Wall, with the three soldiers looking towards the wall in tribute. Also visit the Vietnam Women’s Memorial, which depicts three uniformed women with a wounded soldier. Visiting this site is a moving and powerful experience, regardless of one’s personal experience to the war.

Independent Hotel’s Home to Philly’s Finest Mural

independent2The Independent Hotel is a 24-room boutique hotel in Philadelphia’s chic and gay-friendly Midtown Village neighborhood. Like in the best boutique hotels, no two rooms are alike, minus the similarity of the sweet 32” flat panel TV that hangs in every guest room. And like all great things in Philly, the Independent is chock-full of history and belongs to the National Register of Historic Places.

The staff is accommodating and the rooms are like a fine European hotel – chic and comfortable without an overabundance of amenities. The attention to detail was spent on finer things, like the luxurious mattresses and sumptuous toiletries.

Philadelphia is very proud of its Mural Arts program and the over 2,700 murals that are sprinkled throughout the city – the home of one mural by Kim Senior residing at 30-feet tall is in The Independent’s expansive and stunning lobby. It sets the tone for this stylish hotel as soon as you enter the lobby.

Kung Fu & King-Sized Collection at the Asian Art Museum

If you think of Asian Art as just orchids, bamboo, and cast iron teapots, Picture 5you haven’t been to the Asian Art Museum in the Civic Center – and you need to go! Not only does the museum have priceless artifacts like the oldest Chinese gilt-bronze Buddha in the world (photographed in textbooks everywhere), but they offer some pretty cool interactive programs such as yoga inspired by the sculpture poses, storytelling for the kids (“How Ganesha Got His Elephant Head”), and learning the art of Japanese Tea Ceremonies.

The museum even has exhibitions for the night owls with their Thursday night after-hours parties called MATCHA.  Observe the Shaolin Temple monks demonstrate some high-kicking kung fu while you listen to Shanghai Jazz.  Always changing and never a dull moment, this Asian Art Museum will keep you exploring  over 6,000 years of history.

Black History Always Shines at The Apex Museum

Picture 16Black History doesn’t begin or end in February at The APEX Museum. Open year-round, APEX, which stands for African American Panoramic Experience, is Atlanta’s only museum dedicated to African American heritage and culture. Located in the historic Auburn Avenue district, a one-time hub for African American-owned businesses as well as many churches and civic organizations, APEX presents history from the unique African American perspective.

Established in 1978 by filmmaker Dan Moore who was spurred to action after attending a moving banquet honoring legendary Morehouse president Benjamin E. Mays (who mentored Dr. King), APEX packs a lot in a small space. Visually intriguing, APEX features several exhibits on a regular basis that date back to Africa and come full circle to today. As a result, ancient Africa, African American inventors and business owners all co-exist under one roof.

Celebrity visitors include Halle Berry and Gladys Knight, but stars aren’t the only ones amazed by the APEX’s awesome line-up of historical contributions.

Arriving by taxi but traveling by Picture 18cable car, this hotel’s location is perfect for the business traveler looking for some tourism in the agenda.  The financial district is the hub of the city’s enterprise, but surrounded by the most popular destinations: Union Square, Fisherman’s Wharf, Coit Tower, and North Beach are all within several blocks.

Twin Peaks are a must for anyone who comes to San Francisco and for anyone who hasn’t been in a while.  Bundle up for the wind, and you’ll enjoy eucalyptus-shrouded hiking, bird-watching, city-watching and the most popular place to snuggle with your loved ones in the city.

Stella McCartney’s Rock ‘n Roll Meatpacking Store

Picture 26Stella McCartney was born rock royalty, but in the design world she has become a fashion force to be reckoned with: Madonna, Gwyneth and Cameron are a few of her famous fans. Her fiercely feminine clothes (think sexy with a draping of romance) were the first to invade the now uber chic meatpacking district that is now host to DVF, Carlos Miele and the late Alexander McQueen, among many other design houses.

Besides being the offspring of an ex-Beatle, Stella is most widely known for her staunch PETA stance. So near to her heart is the cause, that before she even started her line in 2001, she told Gucci Group her line would stay true to its “no fur and no leather” stance. Such conscious free clothing includes vegetarian shoe collection, faux fur and faux leather, but the luxury is most definitely always there with the incredible tailoring, craftmanship and unique designs. Stella’s line is huge with everything from fragrances, shoes, bags, and organic skin care to cashmere coats and red carpet dresses.

An added bonus? Her father’s Beatles music is always playing whenever you walk into the meatpacking store.

TV Host Hilary Kennedy Loves Late Nights at DMA

Hilary Kennedy has hosted segments on everything about local Dallas life: sports, real estate, dining and holiday celebrations. But every third Friday, there’s one DallaPicture 6s event that is “perfect for a night owl like me,” and that’s Late Nights at DMA.

Once a month the Dallas Museum of Art keeps its doors open extra late and the crowd goes from the typical tourist and family scene to young, sophisticated Texans. “They have live music, treats and tours until midnight,” Hilary told citybuzz. Every month there’s a different theme and the DMA does a great job of keeping it cool. For example, in anticipation for Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland remake, the DMA hosted Mad Hatter treasure hunts, a film screening of the original Alice in Wonderland and had a DJ spinning in each of its galleries.

As Hilary says, “It’s great for a romantic date,” or to see great art in an even better atmosphere.

*** Hilary Kennedy is the host of many of Dallas’ favorite TV shows, like NBC5’s “Home and Lifestyle Television,” KFWD’s “Just Fun TV” and “Hot On! Homes.” Hilary began her career as the first female Entertainment Host for the Dallas Stars hockey team and is the host of the nationally syndicated “New Year’s Nation” every New Year’s Eve.

The U.S. Botanic Garden is Always in Bloom

Right next to bustling Capitol Hill is haven of breathtaking Picture 15flowers, roses and gardens at the U.S. Botanic Garden. Tracing its beginnings to 1816, The U.S. Botanic Garden the oldest of its kind in North America.

It is divided into three locations: the Conservatory, Bartholdi Park, and the National Garden. The newly renovated Conservatory is one big greenhouse divided into separate rooms and holds over 4,000 living species. Each room simulates a different habitat and contains various types of plants that ordinarily would not survive in Washington D.C., from desert species to Southern plants to medicinal plants.

Bartholdi Park serves as a home landscape demonstration garden and is home to a beautiful fountain that is 30 feet high. There is also the National Garden, which contains the Rose Garden and the First ladies Water Garden, as well as an outdoor amphitheater.

Live Music Noon to Midnight at World Cafe Live

The World Café Live is hands down the best place to hear music that’s not getting played on the radio. It was named best club in Philadelphia by NBCphiladelphia.com in 2009 and best new music venue by Philadelphia Magazine when it came out on the scene in 2005. Whether you’re looking for indie singer-songwriters, hip hop artists, or African drumming; The World Café Live is your destination.

world cafe live

One part music venue, one part restaurant, you never know what you’re going to get when walking into World Café Live. Downstairs is a three tiered music hall which seats 300 people in a bistro style set up, and as many as 650 people in the standing room only section. Upstairs is a café on historic Walnut Street. Comfortably seating 100 people, the café features live radio broadcasts and performances every day of the week. It has an extensive menu and the best happy hour specials near the Drexel Campus.

Tory Burch’s Philly Fave is The Guard House

Tory Burch, the designer that epitomizes Manhattan, Gossip Girl style, is actually a Philadelphia native- and raised on a farm, no less! But amidst all the glitz and glamour of Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week, Tory told citybuzz there’s one place she has to go when she’s back in her hometown: The Old Guard House Inn Restaurant.Picture 7

Much like Tory’s upbringing, The Guard House, as Tory says, is in the suburbs of Philadelphia and quite unassuming. Yet, this historical landmark (rumor says George Washington slept here) is a neighborhood favorite for those in the know. Year after year it’s voted the Main Line’s best restaurant and the Philadelphia Inquirer gave it an “Excellent” rating.

It’s this neighborhood vibe that keeps people coming back: generous servers and generous portions. The prices are just right for oversized plates of German and Continental inspired food like Wiener Schnitzel and signature Lobster Bisque.

The Old Guard House Inn may be away from the city lights, but it’s bright enough to keep Big City Gal Tory Burch coming back time and time again.

*** Tory Burch is a fashion designer of her namesake line, Tory Burch, based in New York City. Celebrity fans include Cameron Diaz, Oprah Winfrey, Jennifer Lopez, Uma Thurman and Hilary Swank.

Davies Symphony Hall even offers a free after-hours party for some of its concerts, allowing you to enjoy popular bay area music in a nightclub atmosphere.  The folks at SFS really know music, from classical to contemporary, and hope to inspire the same appreciation in their guests, even if it requires drinks and socializing from the balconies that offer spectacular views of City Hall.

Romance & Adventure on the Arboretum’s Full Moon Hike

For romantic night owls, take a walk at the Full Moon Hike at the U.S. National Arboretum. Sure, the bars and entertainment in the city offer plenty of adventure, but this hike is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that can’t be beat.

Picture 1

At four miles long, with a path through meadows, woods and gardens, this hike allows you to see what the Arboretum looks like by moonlight, under a blanket of stars.  There are some truly magical areas throughout the hike, including a beautiful view of the Anacostia River and the illuminated National Capitol Columns.

The scenery is a rare sight, especially after spending a whole day next to loud cars and city life. It’s not just a light stroll through the park, though. The terrain is often hilly and uneven, so the hike is mildly strenuous. There’s no better way to see the lights of our nation’s capital than on the Full Moon Hike.

Move Over Shakira- It’s Fat Chance Bellydance

Picture 21Shakira may have started the belly dancing trend in mainstream America, but recently you’ve seen it featured as a fitness routine on Dr. Oz and in Akon’s “Bellydancer” video.  At Fat Chance Bellydance, in the heart of the Mission District, you can see a bodacious belly dancer in front of your own two eyes- or become one yourself.

One part troupe, one part workshop, Fat Chance Bellydance showcases American Tribal Style dancing,  created by director Carolena Nericcio. Here you’ll see how improvisational choreography creates a smooth and enchanting hip dance, or learn both slow and fast movements, and how to use zils to make your own beat.  Fat Chance is perfect if you’re looking for unique entertainment at a party, wanting to learn how to do solo performances at restaurants and shows, or for an alternative outlet to spice up your fitness routine.  Walk-ins are welcome!

Oyster House: A Philly Tradition for Aphrodisiacs

The Sansom Picture 13Street Oyster House, now known as just the Oyster House, is a classic staple of the food scene and has been serving Philadelphians fresh seafood at reasonable prices since 1947. Oyster Hour is the House’s version of happy hour, serving “Buck-A-Shuck” $1 Oysters of the Day and drink specials during weekday happy hour and late-night on Saturdays.

These mouth-watering little aphrodisiacs are a wonderful start to a night out on the town, chased down with the House’s quality cocktails. The Oyster House is also home to Philadelphia’s odd, but delicious pairing, fried oysters and chicken salad – an old 19th century tradition that started at The Union League and stayed in the city’s heart.

After being renovated a little over a year ago, the Oyster House now boasts high ceilings and industrial-chic flair; with the family’s dynamic collection of ceramic oyster plates speckling the walls, you’ll find just the right hint of personality that will make you want to come back for more.

DC’s Best Indie at The Black Cat

Kings of Leon. Death Cab. The Strokes. ThePicture 13 Black Cat’s mission is to bring D.C. locals and visitors the best in live independent music and it’s been succeeding since its opening in 1993.  Located in the famous U Street Corridor, the club has served as a staple in Washington DC’s alternative music scene and draws large crowds with its live bands and DJ sets.

Nightly, The Black Cat hosts bands on the local, national, and international levels. Major names include Arcade Fire, Beck, Andrew WK, Korn, Moby, The Killers, Jamiroqui, Foo Fighters, and the list could continue all night. With its cool atmosphere and even cooler bands, The Black Cat is always on the forefront of alternative, independent music.

Drama Queens and Kings Flock to Philadelphia Theatre Company

Picture 5The Philadelphia Theatre Company’s performance season is always filled with the best of the best; whether it’s a world premiere, an off-Broadway smash, or a Tony award winner, when PTC productions are coming to town the whole city is buzzing.

PTC was founded in 1974 and has been dedicated to presenting world premieres of major works by contemporary American playwrights, which is quite a feat considering the enormously wide range that is American Theatre! PTC productions take place at the Suzanne Roberts Theatre on the Avenue of the Arts. The 365-seat theater was renovated in 2008, providing the perks of a modern venue (like generous leg room) in an intimate viewing space.

To go, or not to go? Not even a question! With new shows happening every month, there’s no reason not to visit Suzanne Roberts Theatre for a Philadelphia Theatre Company production.

Pandora’s Got Nothing on The Box

What’s in ThPicture 11e Box? Most people can’t get into it, but those who have, don’t even know what to say. The Box is incredible nightlife decadence and over the top sexuality that is unique- and shocking- even to this City that’s seen it all. One part Folies Bergere theater (complete with barely clothed dancers) and one part super trendy nightclub, The Box is still one of the hottest doors to get into, eventhough it’s a few years old.

The Box is shaped like a theater, complete with round tables and a second floor balcony (a.k.a. the VIP section). Starting at 1:30 every night, three “interesting” shows perform on stage in hour intervals, with each one getting naughtier and raunchier. The MC (the most famous one being Raven O) kicks the sharp-witted stage shows that are all about finding social commentary through nudity, sexuality and even faux murders. Featuring what could be circus stars (if they weren’t always nude), the acts go from crazy robotic dancers to knife wielding throwers to up and coming singers, but they are most always, always very risque performances.

Needless to say, reservations, and a very large pocketbook, are needed to get into this place that would make Sin City blush.

Touring the Romantic Way: 76 Carriage Company

Picture 92Visitors of Philadelphia can see all the sites through the Philadelphia Trolley Works and the 76 Carriage Company, but for those looking to get away from the tourists and for a more private- and romantic- trip, try the latter with old-fashioned carriage rides.  Tours are written and delivered by real Philadelphians, so you get the entire local flavor.  See the Museum District, the Liberty Bell, Old City, Society Hill, Avenue of the Arts, Antique Row, Chinatown, the PA Convention Center, South Street, Penn’s Landing and much, much more in the Victorian style trolleys. Your Philadelphia pass is good all day long. You can get on and off as many times as you choose at any of the conveniently located stops.

Jean Georges Always Gold for Restaurant Critic Frank Bruni

There’s only one restaurant in New York City where you’ll never hear a bad word from former New York Times Restaurant Critic Frank Bruni; it’s Jean Georges. This celebrity chef has made a name for himself with star-studded favorites Spice Market and Mercer Kitchen, but his self-titled Jean Georges is the creme de la creme of his culinary empire.

“In my job I get a lot of calls and emails saying, ‘Well you know I had heard that X restaurant was great’ or ‘you had said that Y restaurant was great,'” Frank Bruni said to citybuzz of his tenure at the New York Times. “So I get a lot of complaints, and a lot of feedback that’s positive as well, and that’s a restaurant, Jean Georges, that I almost never, ever field a complaint about.” Picture 13

These are words that every chef would like to hear, especially since it’s a commentary from not only one of the most respected food critics in the business, but also of the overwhelmingly happy clientele at Jean Georges.

What makes this place so great? The four star restaurant prepares every meal to perfection, and that is not a cliche here. Every dish steals the show from perfectly seasoned scallops to signature dishes like the checkerboard hamachi and yellowfin tun and roasted squab with a corn pancake and an elegant splash of foie gras. The Trump Hotel restaurant (Hey, if it passed The Donald’s seal of approval, you know it must be incredible) has cleaned up nearly every award in the book: 4 Stars from the Times, 3 Michelen Stars (one of only four NYC restaurants with that Michelen rating), and chef Jean Georges Vongerichten has won 2 James Beard awards for this restaurant alone.

Or, as Frank Bruni simply put it, “Among food lovers who go to the city’s four star restaurants, I think Jean-Georges in the Trump Hotel in Columbus Circle is a restaurant that almost never disappoints.”

*** Frank Bruni is the former restaurant critic for The New York Times and is now working for the Times Magazine. Bruni is also a best-selling author, with works including the politically themed Ambling Into History and his recent memoir Born Round: The Secret History of a Full-Time Eater.

Rooftop Romance at the Gramercy Park Hotel Roof Club

Rooftop real estate is the hottest commodity in New York during the summer, but few places keep the same prestige and popularity in the winter. The Gramercy Park Hotel’s Private Roof Club is the exception to the rule. By closing the retractable rooftop and turning the air conditioners to heaters, the ivy laced and dimly lit trendy summer hotspot becomes a cozy winter, well, hotspot.

Picture 20The Sophia Room epitomizes the warm romance that makes this rooftop so unique from other penthouse locations. The ceiling is actually an art piece, with 17,000 lightbulbs hanging on the wall, and the rest of the room includes two real (and very pricey) Damien Hirsts, two large, chocolate leather couches and one crackling fireplace. The “outdoor” terrace is lit with candles and beautifully placed hanging lights with overgrown trees and flowers separating each couch, making it feel private and quiet for each party. And the view, no matter what the season, is always exceptional with Empire, Chrysler and Union Square skyline views.

A favorite for the A-list guests who stay at the hotel, and New York elite, famous clientele include Eva Mendes, Sienna Miller, Ashely Olsen, Helena Christensen and socialite Olivia Palermo- before she was on The City. The signature martinis are made with the freshest ingredients and are seriously tasty. The rooftop also has a perfect lounge menu, prepared by the chefs from Danny Meyer’s prestigious Union Square Hospitality Group.

The Private Roof Club lives up to its name, because technically it is private to all non-hotel guests. But, by calling ahead, the key-only entrance can be opened to you.

Brunching Paradise at Sabrina’s Cafe

When you wake up on the weekend and know that the only cure to your wretched margarita-beer-kamikaze-everything-but-the-kitchen-sink hangover is a belly-bursting brunch, Sabrina’s Café will be calling your name. Sabrina’s is located just outside of the Italian Market and offers all the classic comfort food of an all-star brunch menu. The weekly specials are always themed (recently it featured Jersey Shore selections like the “Self Tanner” Mexi Special and the “Situation” burger), which makes it even harder to choose from the already stellar menu.

Tried and true favorites, liPicture 15ke the caramelized Challah french toast, stuffed with cream cheese and bananas topped with vanilla bean maple syrup (say what?!), and the “Barking Chihuahua Breakfast Burrito” rolled up with scrambled eggs, black beans, red peppers, and pepper jack cheese (yo quiero!), will send you full and happy to your post-brunch coma…I mean nap. Shuffle on into Sabrina’s in your Sunday sweatpants and that sweater you swore you’d never step out of the house in, because it’s time to hit that sweet, salty, greasy breakfast goodness.

Insider’s Tip: The lines get long and the wait can be too, so be on the safe side and call ahead, they’ll add your name to the list before you get there!

ODC Takes the Artistry of Dance to Another Level

If the images of elegant ballerinas or hip-hop DWTS contestants come to mind when you think of dance performances, ODC Dance Company will blow your mind. The company has been widely recognized for its fusion of modern techniques and ballet, as well as star-studded collaborations with actors like Robin Williams and visual artists like Eleanor Coppola.

A trip to this peaceful, shoreline park would not be complete without visiting the zoo. “I love the Lincoln Park Zoo,” Madeleine said, and millions of visitors each year agree. The free, family oriented experience is absolutely breathtaking in both the beautiful animals (lions to swans) and incredible layout.

A getaway to Chicago would not be complete without a trip to the breathtaking Lincoln Park and uber-hip neighborhood.

Shopping and Social Awareness at Therapy

Small independent shops are not the exception in San Francisco, they’re the rule.  And if you think any one of them couldn’t possibly stand out from all the rest then you haven’t been to Therapy’s clothing and furniture boutique in the Mission District.  Great things do indeed come in small packages, as this littlelightingblogentry one-stop shop is stocked with style from the floorboards to the ceilings, literally.

Besides the consistently friendly service and laid-back atmosphere, you’ll also find Ben Sherman and Penguin brands for men, Sam Edleman and Free People for women, original artwork from San Francisco favorite Aaron Kraten, and a dozen varieties of mod lamps and chic wall decals for every room.  Bring it all together with colorful hand-made local accessories, Betsey Johnson purses, or a clutch by Hobo International, and you literally have it all at your fingertips.

At Therapy, your purchase is always socially responsible.  The store is stocked with items that have been purchased through fair-trade, it has donated over $6800 in 2009 to local classrooms, and promotes TOMS “One For One” Movement through the selling of TOMS shoes, and supports local artists by featuring their work.  Now that is truly ‘shopping therapy’!

Move Over E-Harmony, CAS Gets Sexy and Single

For the upper echelons of San Francisco social life, intelligence is sexy.  That’s why Nightlife at the California Academy of Sciences is the hottest new singles and date spot in the city.  You get to mingle, sip cocktails, dance to the best beats in the city, and enjoy the academy exhibits without the chaos of daytime school groups.  For the 21 and over crowd, it’s a real treat to have the place to yourselves and for once- and not tCASrip over strollers.

Featuring a four-story living rainforest, penguins, a floor-to-ceiling coral exhibit, and just about every other fascinating natural phenomenon, The California Academy of Sciences is the perfect setting for your social event ($60 for private VIP if you prefer), a great conversation starter for first dates, or just a great way to get out on the town without the crowded, dark bar scene.

Be sure to get to the Nightlife event early for the best experience and the least amount of wait times.  Unless you had dinner prior to coming to the Academy, tapas-style plates are available, that is – if you can pull yourself away from how bizarre it is to watch a glowing jellyfish while drinking a cosmo.

Spice Up Date Night at Fernbank’s Martinis & IMAX

salsa-nightA trip to the museum has always seemed to be a silent, introspective experience a.k.a. not a hangout spot. The Fernbank Museum has found a way to spice it up with the Martinis and IMAX Friday night movie series where guests sip on delicious cocktails, dance to live music and nibble on delectable bits all beneath the remnants of the dinosaur dynasty.

Martinis and IMAX, presented by Turner, features films such as The Greatest Places, Wild Ocean and Van Gogh’s Brush with the Ocean. This is not your average dinner and a movie; the screen is the world’s largest film format at 5 stories high and 75 feet wide. Why not opt a cocktail for a soda? Cocktail favorites include the Frost Bite Martini, Kentucky Cider and the IMAX original. And boring popcorn is replaced by restaurant worthy menu selections including specialty pizzas,  assorted appetizers and desserts.

Glenn Hotel’s Divine Downtown Digs

In a city where boutique hotels are emerging like roses from the rubble, it takes much more than a comfy bed for a boutique hotel to stand out. At the Glenn Hotel in downtown Picture 6Atlanta, they are doing just that with spacious accommodations, complimentary wireless internet access, and the city’s first rooftop bar complete with unlimited views of the Atlanta skyline.

Apart from providing luxurious guest accommodations, the Glenn Hotel is trying to limit their carbon footprint by reducing overall energy usage. The location alone is walking distance from major city landmarks, which makes for great gas savings. The hotel itself is a historic landmark that was going to be demolished until investors chose to turn the eyesore into an eye-catcher.

After a night of Hawks magic at Phillips arena, a tour of the CNN center or even a day at Centennial Park, take a few steps over to the Glenn Hotel for dinner at 30 Tables- the hotel’s “Ode to Atlanta” with delectable southern treats.

Try one of the many packages available, including the Get Luckie package in which your reservation includes a lottery ticket.

America’s Top Chef Exemplifies Perfection at Craft

Tom Colicchio, the head judge of Bravo’s emmy award-winning Top Chef, usually has harsh criticism for the up and coming contestants. But taking one bite of his mouth watering creations at thPicture 7e flagship Craft Restaurant, you’ll understand why he is so harsh. Every single dish at this upscale New American restaurant is absolutely served to perfection.

Deemed as the pioneer of mix-and-match mains and sides, Craft’s menu is an a la carte dream with every dish as tasty as the next. From the famous rustic Hen-of-the-Woods mushrooms to the succulent sirloin steak main and even the minor side of gnocchi would make most (Italian) chefs cry. The back-to-basics cooking style Colicchio employs lets the ingredients shine and for the diner, it elevates the experience of the simplest and most unglamorous dishes, like corn, into a shining yellow pot of gold.

The decor of Craft reflects the clean yet rustic menu. The tables, floors, and bar are made of an oak wood, but the design has clean lines as if it were a modern fusion restaurant. The tables are abnormally large, a trend, like the upscale family-style menu, that has followed to most high-end Manhattan restaurants, to accommodate all the tasty dishes.

With culinary and restaurateur imitators galore, it’s no wonder Colicchio and Craft have swept up three stars from the New York Times and numerous prestigious James Beard Awards. Oh, and don’t forget, the title of the real “Top Chef.”

Get your Couture for Cheap at Second Time Around

If you lust aftPicture 11er Oscar de la Renta, but can only really afford Old Navy, then Second Time Around may be your favorite find of 2010. Second Time Around is a consignment shop near Rittenhouse Square that only sells designer merchandise (Dolce, Betsey, Versace, and the like) that is up to snuff with the shop’s high standards. The clothing must be no more than two years old, and in pristine condition, so with standards like that you are bound to find a steal at 30-70% off original prices.

This boutique gives- and receives. If you’re looking to ditch some duds for extra closet space and some weekend martini money, stop into the shop with three or more items and see if your garb is up Second’s alley.

Just Throw It In The Bag At Tags

Picture 14Recently, many have been acquainted with Kandi Burress from Bravo’s TV hit Real Housewives of Atlanta or as a Grammy winning singer and songwriter. As co-owner of Tags ATL, a women’s and men’s boutique located in the cozy West Village Vinings area of Atlanta, Burress has the opportunity to express herself fiercely and  fashionably.

On any day of the week patrons may bump into celebrity giants including Clean House host Niecy Nash, rapper Yung Joc and many other entertainers that reside in the Atlanta area.

Stylish to the Exotic at Pearl River Department Store

Teas, slippers, lamps, party supplies, stationary, fengshui, window blinds, ceramics, bags, lanterns, condiments, kitchenware, and chinese dolls are a few of what fills the shelves at Pearl River. Clearly,  Pearl River isn’t your average department store- or even store for that matter. As an intriguing blend between two very different cultures, Pearl River is the first Chinese American department store.

Stepping into the SoHo store, one is immediately overcome with unique colors and never-before-seen (in the West, at least) toys and trinkets. The three-story store in the middle of SoHo is constantly expanding, like the new 10,000 foot home department.  Needless to say, it’s a one-stop shop for everything you may need, Chinese or American.

Hotel Palomar is an eco-friendly hotel that up and down sets an example for a better environment. The hotel has been recognized for a multitude of green things, like design innovation, water and energy efficiency, and opening the first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) registered restaurant in the city, Square 1682.

Harry Winston: Rare Gemstones and Diamonds Galore

You may know Harry Winston as the design house of Jennifer Lopez’s hugely famous million dollar pink diamond engagement ring, or as the man who owned- and donated- the most famous diamond in the world, the Hope Diamond, but this store holds much more than diamonds. On the top floor of the Fifth Avenue boutique, master craftsmen create handmade timepieces and one-of-a-kind designs. The collection of the aptly named “The Incredibles” features large and exquisitely cut sapphires, rubies, tourmalines, and emeralds in custom designs surrounded by none other than beautiful diamonds. The excellence and sheer beauty of the rare gemstones and designs makes this a Hollywood favorite for every major red carpet, wedding, or special event.

Get the True London Look at Topshop

“Get the London Look” may be Kate Moss’ Rimmel tagline, but it doesn’t apply more aptly than for the much buzzed about Topshop. As the face/designer of Kate Moss for Topshop and its highly anticipated U.S. debut in SoHo, Topshop puts the likes of other trendy, discount stores like H&M and Zara to shame. It’s colorful, crazy celebrified, and seriously stylish; there’s a massive shoe boutique, accessories section, vintage galore, and a floor dedicated to men. Other stores may have guest designers, but Topshop has a resident Supermodel, Kate Moss, and an entire Picture 7floor designated to high-end designers giving fierce fashions specifically for the fashionista Topshop crowd.

And the shoe selection! Ahhh! If this was around during the SATC era you know SJP would be digging through discount heaven at the Christian Louboutin inspired sky-high stilettos and ultra designed Prada inspired heels. You can find more unique, colorful, and designed shoes at Topshop’s shoe boutique than at Saks Fifth Avenue- and that’s a guarantee.

Let’s not forget about the boys. Topman is dedicated to all things men. From Fedora wearing playboys to laid-back model glam to suits and ties, Topman has everything a stylish city guy could want. This is very smart as it allows the boyfriends/husbands some time to shop for themselves while their other (better) half peruses the other floors of goodness.

If you walk anywhere in London (including red carpets), chances are the hot girl or man is wearing something from Topshop or Topman. That’s because it embodies the London street look of tons of colors, boho vintage, and maybe one too many nods to the neon 80’s. But hey, it’s super fun and seriously fashion forward and- just wait- it will be invading the rest of America soon.

Burlesque Theater Meets Indie Rock at Johnny Brenda’s

Johnny Brenda’s is a three-in-one combo that’s as cool as its location in up-and-coming Fishtown. The space resembles something of an elegant, historic theater meets burlesque club that showcases some of the coolest indie bands in Philly and the US.

One of the few small venues equipped with a balcony, Johnny Brenda’s offers a performance space that’s unique from anything offered in Philadelphia. A world-class sound system send the music of Tokyo Police Club and Thurston Moore from Sonic Youth through the club with perfect quality (both of which played at Johnny Brenda’s before they made it big).

Should hunger strike half way through a show, there’s an eclectic menu made from fresh ingredients from local farmers and an attentive wait staff to the rescue. Keeping with the local theme, Johnny Brenda’s has an impressive selection of high-quality draft beer from local Philly brewers.

Kitson: Home of the Celeb Shoppers

Kitson has a virtual celeb-friendly clothing empire in Beverly Hills. There’s Kitson Men, Kitson Women, Kitson Studio, and Angelina Jolie favorite Kitson Kids that are all in a matter of feet from one another on Robertson.

Although these stores are theoretically divided, they carry everything under the sun. Besides the usual of jeans, dresses, shirts, and pants, there’s a Molton Brown-heavy Apothecary, multi-story shoe rack, sunglasses overload, and handbags in nearly every corner with the famous sequined Kitson handbags being prominently displayed. It goes without saying that there are more than the fair share of celebrities inside and outside the store.

TKTS: New Big Red Booth is the Times Square Star

Not many discount ticket booths get the kind of attention that TKTS receives, like a star-studded grand opening and Jay-Z and Alicia Keys singing on its steps in their ode to New Yoooork, but this place is worth all the praise.

For years this gem of Broadway has bPicture 14een stuck un-glamorously under the Marriot Marquis, a hidden secret for the ticket savvy. Now, after some major construction, the new TKTS Times Square booth is open- and saying it’s better than ever is a serious understatement. It’s not in the heart of Times Square, it is Times Square. The booth, located under the can’t-miss red steps, has transformed Duffy Square into a Broadway fan and tourist photo-op heaven.

Thankfully, the generous discounts are still the same with up to half-off for same-day performances of Broadway favorites Chicago, Jersey Boys, Monty Python… you name it, TKTS still has it. But with this makeover, now you can actually find the booth and it’s clearly stated before you enter the long line what show tickets are up for grabs.

Discount tickets have never looked so good.

It’s All About the Extravagant at The Castro Theatre

Glowing like a beacon over the Castro District, The Castro Theatre marquee is not only a symbol of the city’s gay rights movement (as featured in the Oscar-winning film Milk), but the city’s facastro_frontvorite venue to connect with the community in a way that is colorful and meaningful.  For decades San Franciscans have come together in this lavishly decorated historic theatre for live and screen performances, even participating in cult films such as The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Little Mermaid sing-alongs, Dionne Warwick concerts, and every single film festival that comes to town.

The Castro Theatre is old-fashioned and intimate, right down to the original brass ticket booth out front that’s big enough for only one vendor.  Inside, the Spanish-Oriental influence is apparent in the scraffito wall murals, but the gold art deco details make it familiar.  The 1,400 red velvet seats throughout the main floor, mezzanine, and balcony are new, along with the PA, sound, and lighting systems, but have stylishly retained their early-century charm.

The theatre also functions in the mainstream, as each month it features top box office movies.  Some recent favorites have been the star-studded Nine and Milk, which ran for almost two months.

Vetri’s Osteria is Italian at its Best

Marc Vetri’s name in Philadelphia is known across the city, whether you’re talking about his flagship and namesake restaurant, or the charming and rustic Osteria. Homemade pastas, thin crust pizzas, wood grilled meats and fish are always in season, making Osteria the perfect place to dine year-round – the ultimate perk being that the menu changes every three months.

Although the Italian menu may be a bit hard to read, the descriptions are universally delectable. Pizzas range from “le pizza tradizionale,” i.e. the Margherita, to Vongole Pizza, with cockles, cherrystone clams, mozzarella, parsley and anchovy pesto. Antipasti plates range from farm-fresh vegetables dressed with bright vinaigrette and local cheeses, to house-cured salumi. And pastas are endlessly creative, straying deliciously far from Momma’s spaghetti and meatballs.

This passionate food is served up along side a 100 bottle Italian wine list from every region of the country. It’s the perfect place to try Marc Vetri’s infamous Italian cuisine without worrying about a fully booked reservation list.

A Century of Music at This Great American Hall

The Great American Music Hall has been described many ways: opulent, warm, friendly, even sanctified.  Whatever your adjectives, this place is just plain fun, from the smiles at the red velvet-draped front door to the energy of the crowd buzzing off the ceiling frescoes.  Having hosted such diverse big names as Duke Ellington, Billy Joel, The Grateful Dead, and Van Morrison, this gracious Victorian hall has charmed San Francisco throughout the twentieth century.

MusicHall2This 5000 square foot concert hall has seen many changes since its opening in 1907. Constantly upgrading the sound system and restoring anything that begins to lose luster, the Great American Music Hall takes pride in providing you with the best intimate music experience.  You can even book the venue for private wedding receptions, product launches, holiday parties, and bar mitzvahs.

When spending the evening here you have no choice but to leave the hustle of the city behind, grab a drink at the restored Victorian bar, and let go of your troubles on the oak dance floor.  Why not enjoy one hundred years of history and modern entertainment all in one evening?

The Pentagon’s Secret Five Star Experience

The Pentagon. Those two words are enough to conjure up images of “Top Secret” signs hanging on closed doors, like the kind shown in movies. Well, those doors are actually not as closed as you might think. By making a reservation in advance, the symbolic building known as the headquarters of the Department of Defense opens up via a guided tour.Picture 7

The tour takes about 90 minutes and covers nearly two miles, visiting numerous displays and memorials that have had a significant place in our nation’s history. All the tours are free, and there’s an option to go it alone on a private tour or in groups of five or more. You can also visit the Pentagon Memorial, which honors the victims of 9/11, any day of the week without a reservation.

Just seeing the unique architectural design is an amazing experience as well. As the largest office building in the world, it’s virtually a city in itself with 23,000 employees, 4,200 clocks, 691 water fountains, 284 restrooms, two cafeterias and six snack bars located throughout the 6,5000,000 square foot floor area. The most amazing thing is that, despite having 17.5 miles of corridors, it takes seven minutes- at most- to walk between any two points in the building.

Garbarani Goes Fashion Forward

From high end designers like Elie Tahari and Robert Rodriguez to boutique clothing lines Splendid and Black Halo, Garbarini has a fashion forward mix that would make even New York boutiques blush. With the posh Cherry Creek North as its backdrop, Garbarini offers stellar service to accompany the up-to-the-moment selections of jean, shoes, purses, and evening wear. Its incredible collection has caught the eye of Denver’s fashionistas as well as Comcast’s “Best In the City” awards.

Literally Unearth The Ice Age at The Page Museum & La Brea Tar Pits

Ever secretly fantasized about being an archeologist? Well, The Page Museum may be the closest thing to living out your dreams.  The museum is at the Rancho LPicture 10a Brea Tar Pits, which is world famous for having the largest and most diverse collection of extinct Ice Age plants and animals in the world. Think 40,000 year old mammoths, saber-tooth tigers and pre-historic sloths, just to name a few.

For those who don’t want to get down and dirty, the museum has dramatic exhibits of prehistoric animals. At the Page Museum Laboratory, you can see (real) archaeologists unearthing, cleaning and repairing fossils. Outside in Hancock Park, amazing life-size replicas of several extinct mammals whose fossils are in the ground below will bring the whole experience into perspective.

Silver Lake Sets a New Standard for LA Cool

This is definitely not the Hollywood Hills that you’re used to seeing. Known as “The Williamsburg of the West,” Silver Lake has been home to many famous musicians, artists and hipster elite a la Katy Perry, Beck and Tom Waits, much like its BrooklynPicture 18 counterpart. As upscale as it is quaint, Silver Lake is the place to go for off-the-beaten-path boutique vintage shops and amazing multi-ethnic cuisine. With a thriving indie music scene, and many up and coming artists, Silver Lake puts the hip into hipster.

Silver Lake is also home to some of California’s most impressive modern homes (like Kiefer Sutherland’s bachelor pad) and sprawling picturesque landscapes and city views that only the Hills and the Silver Lake Reservoir can provide. Silver Lake is an awesome locale for someone who is eager to experience the “real” LA, the LA most people didn’t even know existed. Hey, if it’s good enough for Agent Jack Bauer, then it’s good enough for everyone.

The Academy of Natural Sciences: T. Rex to Asian Butterflies

For the daintier types, the Butterflies! exhibit showcases live butterflies from Central and South America, East Africa and Southeast Asia in its tropical garden. And everyone can enjoy The Live Animal Center, which holds over 100 live birds, mammals, reptiles and invertebrates. Ceiling-to-floor observation windows let you look behind the scenes, where staff and volunteers feed, groom and upkeep all of the animals.

Check out the website before heading over, because the visiting exhibits are ever-changing and always exciting.

Fresh Fish with a Philly Twist at McCormick & Schmick’s

Next to the towering City Hall at the top of South Broad Street, the self-proclaimed “fresh fish authority,” McCormick & Schmick’s stands proud in the heart of Philadelphia. Over 30 varieties of fresh seafood is flown in daily from around the globe, and although these restaurants are located across the nation each one offers local specialties.

In Philly, it’s the classic fried oysters and chicken salad for lunch as well as a selection of microbrews from Philadelphia’s own Yards Brewing Company that make this seafood joint unique. M&S has grown a reputation over the years for their famous Happy Hour – offering bar food six nights a week for only $1.95. And it’s hard not to be curious about this clever take on the classic Philly cheesesteak – The Philly Tuna Cheesesteak features Ahi Tuna, Onions, Peppers and Melted Provolone.

This downtown hot spot is a great place to eat before a show (since it’s located on the Avenue of the Arts) or meet with friends for a drink. The dark mahogany walls, handcrafted stained glass ceilings and mosaic tiled floors will have you sitting back and relaxed in no time.

Christiane Amanpour Stargazes at Hayden Planetarium

As CNN’s chief international correspondent and anchor, Christiane Amanpour is a journalism star. She has interviewed some of the toughest figures in international news and reported breaking stories from crisis hotspots like Afghanistan and New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.

When Christiane needs a break from the chaos, she heads over to the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History. Taking a Journey to the Stars (the scientific stars, of course), the beauty of the gigantic stars in space tends to put situations on little earth into perspective. The show, narrated by none other thPicture 6an Whoopi Goldberg, features extraordinary images from telescopes and never-before-seen visualizations of physics-based simulations of the life and death of stars, stellar formations, and other heavenly bodies in space.

Christiane isn’t the only journalist who raves about the planetarium, National Georgraphic Adventure and the New York Times say the mind-blowing visuals makes this “easily the most beautiful planetarium show.”

If feeling inspired after the show, the planetarium’s prime Central Park West location makes this one of the few places in NYC to actually see a few stars at night.

*** Christiane Amanpour is one of the leading journalists in news as CNN’s chief international correspondent and anchor of her own show, Amanpour. Her excellence in covering the toughest international breaking news stories has been awarded with a myriad of acclamations including 9 News Emmys, 4 Peabody Awards and an honor by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Brenda’s Comfort Food Has French Soul

On the outskirts of the Civic Center district lies San Francisco’s favorite breakfast and brunch hole-in-the-wall, Brenda’s French Soul Food.  On any given day Brenda’s produces a line of adoring patrons around the block, waiting in anticipation among the smells of buttery Cajun shrimp and grits with salty warm biscuits.  ConsPicture 5idering this gem is among the Top 5 Bold Newcomers from the New York Times and one of Travel & Leisure’s Top 50 US Restaurants of 2009, the hour wait is no surprise.

Since 2007, Brenda Buenviaje has charmed the city with her closet-sized open kitchen, a total of seven tables, and an old-fashioned diner-style counter.  Her New Orleans fare never rises above $10 and the portions are served with a heavy hand and plenty of love. And that’s exactly what you’ll get here, along with the best beignets west of France (try the Godiva chocolate or paprika crawfish).  Wash it all down with Brenda’s special watermelon sweet tea and you’d swear you’re in the French Quarter.

54 Mint Wine Bar’s Italian Charm

SOMA’s new 54 Mint Wine Bar is technically a three-in-one punch of vineria (wine bar), ristorante, and alimentari (food store), but really it’s all imported deliciousness. As the only distributor of some of its Italian fine wines to the straight-from-Italy sheep’s milk cheese and handmade Italian plates, 54 Mint serves up an authentic Italian meal that tastes even better coming from the hand of the heavily accented servers.

This hotspot is the work of native Umbrian owners Alberto Avalle (of NYC’s Il Buco fame) and Claudio Ricciolini- and 54 Mint can’t be a better ode to their homeland. Even the famous Umbrian olive oil is sprinkled into nearly every dish and is even displayed beautifully for customers to buy.

During good weather, make sure to hit up the patio for some great people watching in the trendy SOMA district.

Piercing Fine Jewelry at Venus by Maria Tash

Ever wonder where the likes of Britney Spears, Jessica Alba, and Christina Aguilera get their, um, naval jewelry? Celebrities, including men (Mickey Rourke is a client), go to the custom, classy, one-of-a-kind designs for pierced body parts at Venus by Maria Tash.

Picture 9Belly button rings, nose piercings, and even multiple earrings tend to look more trashy than classy, but not with Maria Tash’s designs. All her jewelry is made of the finest metals and stones like 18k white gold, diamonds, and even rare opals. Her famous “floating”naval piece highlights the top part of the piercing  so your belly button is bare with a glimmering piece highlighting it on top. The jewelry also comes with some bells and whistles, like the internal threading that guarantees no tearing of the piercing, custom post lengths for different sized bodies, and custom designs that are interchangeable and can be updated at any time.

If you don’t have a piercing, that’s not a problem. Upstairs, Venus by Maria Tash offers a relaxing, clean, and very private piercing area that is more like a spa than a piercing parlor (Sex and the City’s Cynthia Nixon had all her daughters pierced here) as well as pierce-free jewelry like rings and necklaces.

New Camera 027Fortunately, you don’t have to book yourself a ticket to enjoy the venue.  There’s nothing more relaxing than sitting by the Palace’s Corinthian columned rotunda and lagoon, brimming with bright flowers and peaceful swans.  This setting has long been the symbol of the Palace of Fine Arts and draws thousands of people each year to its romantic backdrop.  It is, after all, San Francisco’s top choice for outdoor weddings.

Billy Dec’s Favorite Italian Restaurant is La Scarola

Even though restaurateur Billy Dec’s Rockit Bar & Grill may make the best burger in town, it doesn’t mean he doesn’t have cravings for some good, hearty Italian fooPicture 7d. Whenever he’s in need of some pasta and marinara sauce, the Chicago social mover always heads to La Scarola.

The Italian restaurant is known for its low key environment that brings high-profile diners like Billy. It’s been awarded the Zagat Excellent Rating year after year for their gigantic proportions and delicious cannolis. La Scarola’s dishes taste like the ones from the Italian grandmother you never had.

Sure, Billy Dec is well-known about town, but La Scarola’s great because regardless of your residence, you’ll feel like a local. The place is small so everyone knows each other, and if they don’t, you’ll feel like they do after the meal is over. With a crackling fireplace and the likes of Billie Holiday setting the mood, it’s impossible not to relax and enjoy a great dinner at La Scarola.

*** Billy Dec is the CEO and Founder of Rockit Ranch Productions, Chicago’s premier restaurant and entertainment development company. The company owns the new hotspot Sunda, The Underground club, and the award-winning Rockit Bar & Grill.

Sushi Gets Jazzed Up at Yoshi’s

Someone forgot to tell the proprietors of Yoshi’s that sushi and jazz are cultural opposites.  Of course its founder and namesake, Yoshie Akiba, is also a fascinating mix.  YoshisOrphaned in Japan during WWII, Yoshie came to Berkeley as a student and opened Yoshi’s with her two best friends.

Thirty years later, in its new $10 million setting in the Fillmore District (the “Harlem of the West”), Yoshi’s has earned a reputation as one of the world’s finest jazz venues featuring jazz legends like Dizzy Gillespie, Diana Krall, Max Roach, and Harry Connick Jr.

Yoshi’s is also an award-winning restaurant, with Chef Shotaro Kamio presenting modern sushi that he describes as “seasonal, simple, surprise.”  You can make dinner reservations in the separate restaurant before the show or enjoy small tapas-style sushi and sake cocktails in the club.  Prices are higher than average, but you’ll appreciate that Yoshi’s serves fresh and thoughtful Japanese cuisine rather than greasy quesadillas and mozzarella sticks.

Tickets range from $13 – $100 depending on the performer, and the club seats 420 in its warmly lit acoustic cavern.  The custom sound system, complete with a resident Steinway grand piano, is clear and allows artists to truly be the center of attention.  So feel free to jazz it up with flapper outfits and tailcoats.

Controversial De Young Museum Shines

Unless you’re a local who knows its history, visitors who pass by the De Young Museum might think an abstract spaceship had crash-landed into Golden Gate Park. Providing San Franciscans with a never-ending debate over aesthetics, the building is intended to unify modern art and architecture with the natural landscape.  Meant to oxidize and turn pale green the way the Statue of Liberty has done, the museum’s copper mesh exterior will eventually blend in with the surrounding eucalyptus trees.

image_1_32Before you even enter the De Young Museum, explore over five acres of native landscaping, in which you can wanarden, koi ponds, waterfalls, and the Andy Goldsworthy “Faultline” installation in the courtyard.

Like any great museum, the De Young features an impressive permanent collection: Ancient Teotihuacan stone murals from Mexico, the finest collection of American paintings, African and Oceanic art, and The Anderson Graphics Art Collection.  Great exhibitions have included Yves Saint Laurent, Andy Warhol, Chihuly, and most recently King Tutankhamun.  You can also explore the 144 ft. observation tower that provides views of the park, the new California Academy of Sciences building across the lawn, the Golden Gate Bridge, and downtown.

Whether you love the building and what it contains, or hate its aesthetics, the architects and curators have obviously done their jobs – eliciting reactions.

Who’s Who of Aircraft at the Smithsonian Nat’l Air & Space Museum

As with anything beginning in Smithsonian, The National Air & Space Museum has an impressive showing of all things airborne.  Beginning with the Wright Brothers and constantly updating with new space artifacts and Hubble telescope pictures, this museum boasts a who’s who of aircrafts. The Spirit of St. Louis, 1903 Wright Flyer, and Apollo 11 Columbia are just a few of the big names on display.

More than simply displaying aircraft, the museum also houses the aptly named Lockheed Martin IMAX theater, Albert Einstein Planetarium, and flight simulators if you want to get involved in the action. This is the mother of air and space collections and it’s located in the heart of the nation’s capital.

Welcome to the New and Improved MOCA

Only in Hollywood can a museum bring out so many A-listers. Art lovers Brangelina, Lady Gaga, and members of the Bolshoi Ballet were part of an eclectic mix to honor the new Museum of Contemporary Art.

The MOCA is the only museum in Los Angeles devoted solely to contemporary art. It houses nearly 6000 pieces (and growing!) from all mediums of art produced after 1939. The museum is actually in three facilities: MOCA Grand Avenue, The Geffen Observatory at MOCA, and MOCA Pacific Design Center. The collection is so impressive that it’s regarded as one of the most important collections in showcasing the post-war world.

And as you can see, it is a favorite for many of Los Angeles’ most elite artists.

Maialino is Danny Meyer’s New Crown Jewel

Picture 22Restaurateur Danny Meyer is known as the “King of Union Square” owning landmark restaurants like Gramercy Tavern and Union Square Cafe. With the very recent opening of his high-end restaurant, Maialino, in the chic Gramercy Park Hotel, it seems he has the new crown jewel to his empire.

Meyer has professed that it’s been his dream to open an authentic Italian restaurant and Maialino is the culmination of his hard work and vision. The name is actually Meyer’s nickname, meaning “roast suckling pig,” from when he lived in Rome in his early twenties. Of course, the signature dish at Maialino is the suckling pig.

One part wine bar, one part trattoria, the Roman-style restaurant serves dishes in true Italian style with primi, secondi and antipasti courses written in Italian. The dishes are simple, elegant, and fresh, using the local Greenmarket as its supplier. Just like the food, the restaurant reflects the juxtaposition between rustic Roma and modern NYC. The restaurant is outfitted in shades of brown and blue checkered tablecloths, but keeps its clean and modern lines.

In true Meyer fashion, Maialino serves consistently delicious food inside an elegantly designed restaurant. Yet this one has the added bonus of generous views of the private Gramercy Park inside one of the coolest hotels in Manhattan.

One of the most stylish and beloved theaters in Dallas (voted Best Movie Theater by the Dallas Observer), the Angelika combines old world charm with new world hip and features some very under-the-radar Oscar-worthy films. During the spring this place packs a hearty crowd of celebrities and movie critics for the annual USA Film Festival; however, look over your shoulder on any given day and you’d be surprised who might be sitting behind you.

Majestically overlooking the whole of Mockingbird Station, the Angelika is easily accessible by car, cab, or train and provides an abundance of shops, like Movida Boutique, and restaurants, such as a local Dallas favorite Trinity Hall.  But don’t overlook the Angelika Cafe where you can order standard movie fare such as popcorn and a soda, or get into the mood with wine and chocolate.

Prêt-à-Porter at Movida Boutique

Movida Boutique is where Dallas ladies go for boutique items at affordable prices. Located just underneath the Angelika Film Center, this trendy yet eclectic boutique has great deals and pairings to those in need of some eye-candy or some serious shopping.

Let the fashionable staff help put together your next ensemble. Movida is spacious and tends to be less crowded than other boutiques at Mockingbird Station.

Gilley’s: Rhinestones & a Mechanical Bull

If there is such a thing as upscale honky-tonk, look no further than Gilley’s Dallas. Does the name “Gilley’s” ring a bell? Think John Travolta and a mechanical bull. While this isn’t the original bar or bull from Urban Cowboy (same owner Mickey Gilley), it’s a mighty fine second and a first place win for country-lovin’ good times. Even if yoDALgilleysu’re not a fan of skintight Levi’s and red snakeskin boots, the crowd is so fun you can’t help but join in on the line dance with 200 other cowboys and cowgirls.

A good mix of authentic wranglers, weekend hicks, and fashionable Dallas “bumpkins,” Gilley’s has something for everyone- including an actual mechanical bull. And don’t be afraid of two-stepping, there are free dance lessons every Saturday from 6pm – 8pm with awesome drink specials and free admission for the rest of the night.

With national music acts and local fave The Chris Rivers Band and a decent cover charge, it’s time to break out your rhinestones and boots -or rhinestoned boots-for guaranteed fun at Gilley’s Dallas.

The Majestic Theatre: Where Vaudeville Took Flight

Picture 17Places like Hollywood and New York are known for their legendary theater houses, but with the Majestic Theatre, Dallas has a goldmine of entertainment theatre that lives up to its grand name. On April 11, 1921, the Majestic Theatre opened its doors during the Vaudeville era, hosting a variety of now legendary acts from Houdini to Mae West and Bob Hope.  As Vaudeville began to fade and the era of “talking pictures” emerged, the Majestic Theatre began hosting movie premieres. And not to be outdone with its past, the Majestic hosted stars such as Jimmy Stewart, Gregory Peck and John Wayne.  The Big Bands featuring Cab Calloway and Duke Ellington continued the tradition of live entertainment at the Majestic.

In 1973 the Majestic Theatre went dark after the final showing of the film, Live and Let Die, but when it re-opened in 1983, it was upgraded to the elite list on the National Register of Historic Places. Today the Majestic Theatre serves as a beautiful old-era theatre house, with extravagantly engraved and decorated balconies, plush red seats, and grand box seats, and is home to performing acts as diverse as Menopause the Musical to Dallas Black Theatre performances to Moscow Ballet’s Great Russian Nutcracker.

A Good Night’s Never a Question at Cafe Wha?

Tucked along the NYU friendly Macdougal Street, Cafe Wha? and its humble exterior might make you question the legitimacy of this place. Put all doubts aside, over the years Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Bruce Springsteen, Bill Cosby and Richard Pryor have all performed on its small stage. Picture 5

Today, the place is always packed with a cool, downtown crowd. The lowly lit venue is always loud with buzzed New Yorkers and the small stage allows for an intimate setting. Different guests perform every night, but the acclaimed Cafe Wha? Band is guaranteed to play every Wednesday through Sunday. And comedians, many of whom have appeared on Comedy Central, HBO or late-night television, open for the band regularly.

Arrive early for the best seats, but bets are on that you half-way through you’ll be singing at the top of your lungs and turning this live music venue into a personal dance floor.

The Met’s Thomas Campbell Eats at Balthazar

Balthazar is owned by the same Keith McNally of the trendy, meatpacking hotspot Pastis, so it’s no wonder it’s always packed with a cool crowd. One of the Picture 9elite New Yorkers that frequents the French bistro in artsy SoHo is the Director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Thomas P. Campbell.

Often quoted as a “masterpiece,” Balthazar is known for its fresh baked breads, delicious brasserie cuisine, and rustic Parisian-inspired decor. Favorite dishes include the short braised ribs, Portbello mushroom sandwich (for lunch), and the proudly named Balthazar salad.

No matter what time of day or night you head downtown, this brasserie is always buzzing with social New Yorkers like Campbell. Make sure to call ahead for a reservation. But if you just want to drop by, you can go to the Balthazar Bakery and grab some of their famous grains to enjoy in the privacy of your home.

Thomas Campbell has incredible taste in haute art and tasty cuisine.

Before his role at the Director and CEO in January 2009, Campbell excelled as the Curator in the Department of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts and was the organizer of many groundbreaking and highly acclaimed exhibits at the Met.

Blackbird Bar: Not For the Birds

P8200088Oscar Wilde once said: “Work is the curse of the drinking class,” and if you’ve been to The Castro’s newest and most popular neighborhood bar, Blackbird, you’ll completely understand.   You’ll find a drink for everyone in your group with wines by the glass, artisan microbrews on draft, and proper classic cocktails- and none of them will drain your wallet, even after the 5-8pm happy hour is over.

For years the area has had only two choices when it comes to happy hour– dive bars for the straight community or pricey lounges for the gay crowd.  Blackbird, with expert precision, has nailed the art of comfort and class for the mixed-crowd atmosphere.

To create a Blackbird: blend historical newsprints with local modern art, an old-world cherry wood bar with contemporary seating, and a top shelf drink list handwritten on 8 feet of butcher paper, and the neighborhood bar is ready.  Do not garnish with a cover, fancy dress code, or water down with unemployed barflies- just a twist of chic will do.

Rick Bayless Loves to Walk Under the Picasso

Frontera Grill’s Rick Bayless is a big fan of Chicago’s outdoor areas, but there’s something special about Daley Plaza that never gets old for him.  Daley Plaza is a great place to go year-rouCHIdaleyplazand, with events happening every season. From Halloween activities to the great Christmas tree to ethnic festivities to remembrance ceremonies for Memorial Day, there is always a reason to visit the area.

Even when there’s not an event going on, Rick Bayless told citybuzz he likes to head over to Daley Plaza due to a certain Spanish artist:

One of the places that I’ve never tired of walking through, and we have some really beautiful ones in Chicago, is the area right around Daley Plaza because we have that incredible Picasso sculpture… It’s really fun because they are enormous sculptures and they almost invite you to be part of it, to climb around in them, to interact with the sculpture in a way that I think the artist really want you to do. They are not something that’s sort of often and distant, but something that invite you into them.

Rick Bayless loves the sculpture in Daley Plaza, but we’re sure he also loves the Chicago farmer’s market that calls the plaza home from May through October.

***Rick Bayless is an award-winning chef-restaurateur, cookbook author, and television personality. Known for his Mexican cuisine, Bayless has become hugely successful with restaurants like Chicago’s Frontera Grill and America’s only fine-dining Mexican restaurant, Topolobompo.

Melt The Day Away at Kabuki Springs & Spa

With daily stressors that can wear and tear at your body (and every last nerve), it’s nice to have a place to get away from the grind.  Kabuki Springs and Spa in JaSFkabukipantown accommodates the pampering needs of all, from private, alternative wellness services to San Francisco’s only Japanese-style community baths.

Designed to promote harmony and relaxation, Kabuki specializes in the exotic Pan-Asian experience.  Just $20 at the door and you’re led through orchid and Buddha-lined hallways to a private dressing area, then through the steam curtains into the bath house.   Serene music plays in the background as you melt the stress away in the hot tub, warm and cold baths, sauna, or steam room.  There is no time limit on relaxation at Kabuki, so take a rest between each bath on cedar lounge chairs and hydrate with cucumber water or detoxifying tea.

Open seven days a week, Kabuki hosts men-only, women-only, or co-ed days, depending on your preference.  Talking is strongly discouraged (have fun banging the Thai-style gong if it gets too loud for you!) and intimacy is not allowed.  There’s no need for anyone to feel uncomfortable, since personal peace, space, and wellness are Kabuki’s top priority.

Do You Know the Cha Cha Cha?

Away from the bright tourist lights of North Beach and Union Square, most San Francisco locals head to the Mission District after hours, where one can find the most entertaining fusions of food and nightlife in the city.

One of the Bay Guardian Newspaper’s “Best of the Bay” winneSFchachachars several years in a row,  Cha Cha Cha on Mission Street is the perfect way to pre-game your evening.  This neighborhood favorite features an extensive tapas selection, including Platanos Maduros (tropical sweet bananas with black beans and sour cream) and Ceviche Del Dia (seafood in a spicy lime vinagrette).  There are so many favorites from the tapas menu that most groups have no problem compromising on ordering one of each dish!  There is plenty to go around.

One thing to be sure of when starting an evening here is ordering a pitcher of Cha Cha Cha’s famous sangria. The bartenders also make a killer Caipirinha, with Cachaca Ypioca (a Brazilian rum), sugar, and fresh lime.  Of course, if the traditional Latin drinks aren’t your thing, the bar has plenty of microbrew beers or sweet cocktails to suit you.

The Stars Are Always Out At Nobu Dallas

Picture 4Strategically located off the ultra-luxurious lobby of Hotel Crescent Court, and smack in the heart of Uptown, sits one of Dallas’ sexiest Japanese hotspots. But this isn’t your average sushi joint; this is Nobu Dallas.

A testament to the parking lot full of Bentleys, Maseratis, and Porsches outside, Nobu is prone to frequent visits from VIP guests of the hotel, as well as repeat offenders of pretty much any Dallas sports team from the Cowboys to Mavericks to Stars. And speaking of stars, A-list celebrities and Dallas elite have also been known to frequent their favorite tables, servers, and dishes right here at good ol’  Nobu Dallas.

Nobu offers something delicious for every palate- even those who tend to run from raw fish. Nobu also offers a variety of hearty fare; most notably the Wagyu beef (think Kobe or Washu), their very famous Black Cod with miso glaze, or Lobster Tempura for those with bigger appetites. And just say Omakase! if you have no idea what to order to let your knowledgable server map out your meal. Despite the reputation of most Japanese restaurants, we would suggest saving room for the desserts here.

Classical Art Made Modern at San Francisco Opera

If you think of opera as long, boring, and hard to follow, you haven’t been to the San Francisco Opera.  From the bellbottoms to ball gowns dress code, and SFotellowith subtitles above the stage, a night at the opera isn’t just for the world-traveling elite anymore.  The San Francisco Opera does justice to this classic art form by making it accessible and entertaining to modern society.

In the heart of The Civic Center next to the Capitol Building, every grand staircase and facade of the San Francisco War Memorial Opera House seems to have been carved out of marble and gold, and the set designs are always elaborately impressive.  Taking in the spectacle is even better while enjoying a pint of beer or a high-end wine.  And don’t think the crowd is going to be boring either, since the opera is attended more these days by 20-50 something’s in the peak of their social lives, with great fashion sense to boot.

Tickets can range from $10-$120, but if you’re looking for an old-fashioned night out on the town don’t be afraid to play “Pretty Woman” dress-up, make reservations at one of the many nearby fine restaurants (like Absinthe), and go all out with a box seat and opera glasses.

San Francisco From the Stars at The Starlight Room

You don’t need a time machine to party in 1930’s glam style, just take the elevator to the top floor at the Starlight Room.  Priding himself with more style and attention to detail as other nightclub owners, socialite Harry Denton has done the classic penthouse lounge justice.

With a glittery panorama of downtown, including Union Square’s designer shops and the Bay BridgPicture 4e, the Starlight Room is a place to relax and enjoy the view.  While the bar offers many ‘Million Dollar Cocktails’ such as the $200 Angels Share snifter of cognac, and 20 yr. old Tawny Port with walnut liqueur and Chartreuse, they also offer a drink called ‘The Recession’”– PBR in a brown paper bag for $4.
